A look at UFC 93 and the history of Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

In about three weeks from now the UFC is going to Dublin, Ireland for UFC 93 on January 17, 2009. The main event on that card is a very exciting matchup between Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson.

The co-main event features the return of UFC and PRIDE veteran and all around MMA legend, Mark “The Hammer” Coleman taking on Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.  Coleman, who is now forty-four years of age is climbing back into the Octagon to face the much younger, much faster, twenty-seven year-old Brazilian.

Coleman last met Shogun at PRIDE 31 in February of 2006 in Saitama, Japan. Coleman has had one fight since then and it was a loss against Fedor Emelianenko at PRIDE 32 in October of 2006. He’s been out of action for over two years.

Official UFC 92 weigh-in results

Here are the official weigh-in results for UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008, which takes place on Saturday, December 27th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada (PPV 10pm EST / 7pm PST).

All of the fighters made weight for UFC 92, although some fighters pushed the limit by taking advantage of the one pound of grace extended to non title fights.

The staredown between Quinton Jackson and Wanderlei Silva reached a tension-filled climax when the two light heavyweight contenders got into a shoving match that had to be broken up. This could be the fight of the night, if not year.

UFC returns to Columbus, Ohio for UFC 96

For the third year in a row, the Ultimate Fighting Championship is heading back to Columbus, Ohio. The UFC announced earlier this week that the world’s premier fight organization will travel back to Columbus, Ohio for UFC 96, live from the Nationwide Arena on Saturday, March 7, 2009.

The UFC first arrived in Columbus for UFC 68 in March 2007 for one historic night as Randy Couture won the heavyweight crown for an unprecedented third time as he beat Tim Sylvia. The show’s gate, which surpassed $3 million, set a Nationwide Arena record; the 19,000 fans who saw the event live set a record for the highest North American attendance figure for a mixed martial arts event.

Last March, the UFC returned to Columbus as 15,300 people watched Anderson Silva successfully defend his middleweight title against then PRIDE champion Dan Henderson. The star-studded matchup grossed a gate of $2.2 million at Nationwide.

M-1 reschedules M-1 Challenge finals

Team Russia Red Devil and Team Holland, as well as several superfights were originally scheduled to take place at the 2008 M-1 Challenge finals at the Emerald Queen Hotel and Casino on Friday, December 26 in Seattle, Washington.

However, due to extreme weather conditions, it was not going to be possible for M-1 to transport the fighters to Seattle in time for the event. The Seattle area has been experiencing below freezing weather, snow mixed with freezing rain, and fog. The rest of the week’s forecast looks just as bad.

The M-1 Challenge finals have been rescheduled to take place in Amsterdam either on December 28 or January 4.
