Rd.1 – Apple gets the takedown early in the round and ends up on top looking for a kimura.  Stays on top of Makowski for over two minutes landing ground and pound and still going  for an arm submission.   Makowski can’t escape from the bottom of Apple’s control and stays on his back for close to a full five minutes.
Rd.2 – Apple with a head kick but receives a right hand from Makowski.  Apple shoots in and Makowski gets a guillotine.  Apple escapes and Makowski is now back on the bottom where he spent all of round one.  Apple secures full mount.  Landing elbows from the top.  Makowski gives up his back and Apple sinks in the rear naked choke for the tapout.  Erik Apple defeats Matt Makowski by rear naked choke submission in round 2. Brian Stann vs. Steve Cantwell set for UFC’s Fight for the Troops

by:  Jack Bratcher

Yes you read that correctly, Brian Stann will face Steve Cantwell for the third time, but this time the fight will be in the UFC. This fight is scheduled for December 10 at Ft. Bragg, NC as part of the UFC’s Fight for the Troops card. Stann last fought Cantwell back in July when he lost his WEC Light Heavyweight Title by a round 2 TKO at WEC 35. It was Stann’s first title defense after defeating Doug “The Rhino” Marshall at WEC 33 in March of this year.  To have Stann fight at this event is pure genuis.  He is an Iraqi war veteran and considered the “Pride of the U.S. Marnie Corps” by military men and women who love to see one of their own compete at such a high level.

So how did Brian Stann and Steve Cantwell end up in the UFC? The Zuffa-owned (same company that owns the UFC) WEC, has decided to put a close to their light heavyweight and middleweight divisions. The organization which was founded in 2001, will now focus its efforts entirely on the bantamweight (135lbs.), featherweight (145lbs.), lightweight (155 lbs.), and welterweight (170lbs.) divisions.

CBS Saturday Night Fights Conference Call

EliteXC had a media conference call today featuring Gina Carano, Kelly Kobald, Jake Shields, and Paul Daley, all who will be fighting Oct. 4 on CBS Saturday Night Fights.  The four fighters fielded questions from various reporters. Here’s a synopsis:

Gina  Carano & Kelly Kobald
Carano, when asked if she felt any frustration for not being able to fight Chris Cyborg, responded, that there’s no frustration for not fighting Cyborg this time. Although she does want to fight her, she wants to get through this fight first and then see what happens with Cyborg. Gina insisted, “I’m gonna be here for a second.”

Jared Shaw thinks the media is making too big of a deal out of Gina Carano “refuting her position” as the face of women’s mma.

One subject Gina Carano did not care to spend much time discussing was her weight. When asked what she weighs now and how much she will weigh at weigh-ins next Friday, she responded, “I will weigh 140 lbs. next Friday and what I weigh now I will keep to myself.”
