The TUF Coaches Countdown Show

by:  Jack Bratcher

Tonight (Fri. Sept. 12), The Ultimate Fighter Coaches Countdown show aired on Spike TV.  The point of the show was to give people an overview of Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the coaches of the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter, which debuts Wed. Sept. 17 at 9pm CST/7pm PST.

It is evident that Frank Mir has enormous respect for Nogueira and referred to him as one of his “heroes.”  He also said that he would not disrespect one of his “idols” by stepping into the cage any less than one-hundred percent prepared.

Nogueira also showed respect for the younger Mir, calling him “a very talented kid.”

One of the most interesting aspects of the Mir/Nogueira fight is that we have PRIDE’s top submission heavyweight facing the UFC’s top submission heavyweight.  Even though PRIDE is no more, this is still one of those big fights we never could have seen just a couple of years ago.

Jose Rodriguez vs. Marc Stevens  (170 lbs.)

Round 1

Stevens goes for the takedown immediately.  Rodrigues goes for an armbar, and gets slammed for his effort. Back to full guard, with Stevens delivering some big shots to the face of Rodriguez.  Stevens continuing to drop big shots to Jose.  Rodgriguez to his feet, and catches Stevens with a huge knee to the midsection.  Both fighters clinched against the fence, but the fight goes back to the ground within a few seconds.  Stevens in Jose’s full guard working some ground and pound.  Not much action on the ground, and the ref stands them up.  Stevens goes for a shot and catches Jose with a knee.  Jose locks up a guillotine, and locks up stevens in half guard.  Stevens breaks free from the choke and the ref stands them up quickly.  Another takedown by Stevens at the end of round one.  Dominating round for Marc Stevens.

Trigg set for first pro wrestling bout vs. A.J. Styles

I tuned into TNA last night just in time to catch our buddy Frank Trigg standing in the middle of the ring opposite A.J. Styles. Trigg looks completely natural in there talking smack to Styles. Supposedly they are going to have an MMA-type bout of three five-minute rounds at TNA’s “No Surrender” this Sunday, Sept.14 airing live on pay per view. From what I understand, you can only win by submission in this special rules match. Although Trigg has been appearing on TNA as commentator and advesary to Kurt Angle, this will be his first full-fledged match with the TNA professional wrestling promotion.
