You might recognize him as the cigarette smoking boxer. There has long been talk of former WBA/WBC welterweight champion and former WBC light middleweight champion Ricardo Mayorga of fighting in MMA. Mayorga finally did just that on May 3 when he faced one Wesley Tiffer at “Omega MMA 8: Battle of the Americas” in Mayorga’s hometown of Managua, Nicaragua.
The Virginia state athletic commission claims the state denied a license to Shine Fights for its lightweight grand prix because the promotion did not provide evidence of a surety bond and other necessary documents.
The Shine Fights Sept. 10 lightweight tournament, originally scheduled to take place in Fairfax, Va., will instead go down in Oklahoma, due to licensing issues.
