MMA legal in Vancouver!

Vancouver, British Columbia, will allow MMA on a two-year trial basis.

The City of Vancouver has legalized MMA in Vancouver during their council session today.  The motion to allow MMA on at two year trial basis was passed by a vote of 6-3.  Councillors Meggs, Stevenson, Anton, Chow, Deal, Jang voted for MMA legalization, while Councillors Woodsworth, Reimer, Louie voted against MMA.

Smaller promotions may still be out of luck as they will have to purchase enough insurance to indemnify the City of Vancouver from any liabilities.  There is no idea how much insurance would be required.  The City Manager will determine the appropriate amount.

Earlier this week, a report was prepared for the Vancouver City Council that was very favorable to MMA.  Today the Council debated the report and decided in favor of sanctioning MMA.

Kimo – still in the fight

Still haven’t had enough of Kimo? The following press release was received by PRO MMA (promma.info) on Wed., July 29, 2009:

JULY 28, 2009 – HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA—KIMO LEOPOLDO is alive, well, and still in the fight. The only thing dying here is the integrity of “news” website, TMZ.COM. The website, in its haste to be first to press with its “news,” printed, and later confirmed, a wholly fabricated article that LEOPOLDO was dead. The failure by TMZ.COM to do its due diligence before rushing to publish this story was a reckless breach of journalistic ethics with real fallout.

Chief in this fallout was the damage done to LEOPOLDO’s family. LEOPOLDO’s son became aware of the reports published by TMZ.COM, and was devastated. LEOPOLDO’s other family members, and friends, similarly were distraught and emotionally stunned by the news that had been “confirmed” by TMZ.COM.

Jeff Monson considered flight risk, gets passport revoked

MMA heavyweight and grappling champion, Jeff Monson pleaded “not guilty” to first degree malicious mischief before the court today in Olympia, Washington for “allegedly” spray-painting an anarchist symbol on the State Capitol building.

How “The Snowman” could plead not guilty is a bit bizarre since there are pictures of him in the act all over the Internet. It is likely the reasoning behind his not guilty plea could be that in his mind he was not committing malicious mischief, but rather, spray-painting an anarchist symbol on the State Capitol was his way of protesting the Iraq war and economic inequality, which is what he has claimed from the beginning.

KING-TV reports a Thurston County Superior Court judge ordered Monson to turn over his passport Tuesday while he awaits trial. The order to surrender his passport came after the prosecuting attorney argued that because of Monson’s anarchist beliefs he would have little regard following the orders of the court and should be considered a flight risk.
