GSP protégé, training partner Mike Ricci signs with Bellator Fighting Championships

CHICAGO (January 18, 2010) – Undefeated Canadian lightweight Mike Ricci, a regular training partner to fellow Quebec native Georges St-Pierre, is the latest highly-touted MMA prospect to sign an exclusive contract with Bellator Fighting Championships, the promotion announced today.

The 23-year-old Ricci, who will enter Bellator’s 155 lbs. tournament with an unblemished pro record of 5-0, trains alongside GSP under the famed Firas Zahabi at his TriStar gym in Montreal. Zahabi told Bellator on Sunday that he thinks Ricci is “the next big thing” to come out of Canada.

“It’s a long road to become the next GSP, but Ricci is the farthest along that road of anyone we’ve got,” Zahabi said. “He’s still earning his stripes, so to speak, but if he continues to progress, I think he’ll be right up there with St-Pierre.”

Jeff Monson signs with Strikeforce? (updated)

Monson is 8-2 in his last 10 fights.

According to a new report on Around the Octagon, submission specialist Jeff Monson (31-9) has signed with Strikeforce. Citing sources close to the fighter, the report states Monson will debut with the promotion in 2010 and will likely drop to 205 lbs.

Monson likes to remain active, and usually fights a minimum of three times a year. He fought five times in 2009, going 4-1. He actually holds a decision win over newly crowned Ultimate Fighter Roy Nelson, in a fight that took place in March of this year.

Monson is also a 6x UFC veteran, going 4-2 in the Octagon. His last fight in the promotion was at UFC 65 in Nov. 2006, when he lost a unanimous decision to Tim Sylvia.

Melvin “No Mercy” Manhoef signs with Strikeforce

DREAM and K-1 powerhouse Melvin “No Mercy” Manhoef has signed a multi-year agreement to compete for world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion STRIKEFORCE.

The 33 year old, who hails from Amsterdam, Netherlands, comes to STRIKEFORCE after reaching the semifinal round of the 2008 DREAM Middleweight (185 pounds) Grand Prix tournament by scoring first round TKOs on Dae Won Kim and legendary champion Kazushi Sakuraba on May 11, 2008 and June 15, 2008 respectfully.

His well-known battle cry “When I fight, I am willing to die” has translated into Manhoef’s explosive style of fighting, one that has helped him earn 22 of his 30 career MMA wins and 27 of his 45 career kickboxing victories by way of  knockout.

Kevin Randleman signs with Strikeforce (updated)

Kevin “The Monster” Randleman has a new job with STRIKEFORCE. According to a new report, Randleman has signed a contract with the San Jose based MMA promotion and will be competing in their light heavyweight division (186lbs. – 205lbs.).

Randleman, former UFC Heavyweight Champion and PRIDE veteran, last fought at SENGOKU’s Second Battle in May 2008, where he won a unanimous decision against Ryo Kawamura. Prior to that he was a staple in the PRIDE organization in Japan from 2002-2006 and the UFC from 1999-2002.

Bobby Lashley will fight for Palace Fighting Championship in February

Former WWE pro wrestling star, Bobby Lashley, will reportedly have his next fight with the Palace Fighting Championship promotion. Lashley, 1-0 in his mixed martial arts career, will fight on the PFC’s February 6th card in Lenore, California.

Although an opponent has not been named, a list of fighters Lashley could face to possibly build up his fight resume has been sent to him for review.

Lashley attended Missouri Valley College, where he won three national amateur wrestling championships between 1996 and 1998 and placed fourth in 1995. Throughout 1997 and 1998, he was the National Association of Inter-collegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Wrestling Champion. Lashley later joined the United States Army, where he continued to wrestle.

Breaking News: Jorge Gurgel signs with Strikeforce

11/26/2008 – Within minutes of being released from his UFC obligations, Jorge Gurgel signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce out of San Jose, California.

Coming off a tough blow for blow unanimous decision loss against Aaron Riley in UFC 91 which won “Fight of the Night,” Jorge was issued his official release letter today from the UFC. Immediately Jorge was offered a contract with Strikeforce under undisclosed terms.

When asked about his transition from UFC to Strikeforce, Jorge said “I am very very excited to part of Strikeforce and given a chance to fight new blood and capture a belt. UFC has been my family for a few years now but I am ready for the next chapter. There are some amazing contenders in my weight class including Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez. I will do whatever it takes to climb to the top of this league.”
