Now Means with the takedown as he spins around. Oliveira’s nose bleeding. As he starts to get up Means blasts him with two seemingly illegal knees to the face. Ref halts the action because he thinks they are illegal. Actually… the replay shows that Oliveira didn’t have a hand down, just one knee down, when he got hit with the knees. So, Marc Ratner says they were legal knees. Lots of confusion here as they are arguing with the ref. Tim Means is arguing with referee Dan Mirgliotta about it. Dan says as long as one knee is on the ground, then he is a downed opponent. Official ruling is a No Contest due to an accidental knee to a downed opponent. Oliveira couldn’t continue.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Alex Oliveira vs. Tim Means ruled a No Contest (illegal knee by Means) – Round 1, 3:33

To clarify the rules, as long as one knee is down, the fighter is considered a downed opponent and therefore the knee strikes to the head from Means were illegal. It should have been ruled a DQ for Means and will likely be overturned.
