UFC 159 play-by-play:

Joe Soto vs. Michinori Tanaka

Round 1 – Tanaka takes Soto down in the last 90 seconds, but Soto locks him up in a gogoplata, and it looks very tight. Tanaka is struggling and gets free. Soto switches to a gogoplata, then back to the feet. Tanaka smiles at him, letting him know, good job, but he was able to get away.

Round 2 – High kick from Tanaka. He follows with a couple more strikes then is on his toes bouncing around the cage with good footwork. Soto catches a knee and counters with a right. Big leg kick from Soto. Knee and takedown from Tanaka. Tanaka gets caught in a guillotine but somehow is able to get free and drops an elbow on Soto’s face. He postures up for more damage, then works elbows from inside full guard. Soto goes for a leg with about a minute to go. Tanaka gets free and does more damage from top. 10-9 Tanaka.

Round 3 – They come out exchanging. Joe begins taunting him as they exchange punches. High kick from Soto. Soto landing some good punches but gets taken down. Soto looking for the guillotine again with just over 2 minutes to go. Tanaka gets free and back to his feet and they’re back to exchanging punches. Tanaka takes a deep breath, eats a jab from Soto. More Soto jabs. Under a minute to go. Soto getting off with punches now, getting the better of the stand-up. Soto with a takedown, full mount, goes for the back and RNC at the bell. 10-9 Soto.

Joe Duffy vs. Dustin Poirier

Round 1 – Low kick and a right from Dustin. Another low kick. Dustin pressuring early. He rocks Duffy with a couple punches then they clinch briefly against the cage. Duffy backs out, boxing with Dustin now. Body kick from Dustin. Right from Duffy. Front kick from Dustin. Couple right hands from Duffy and Poirier is stunned briefly. Dustin landing punches now. Duffy fires off a combo. Duffy measuring him. Right hand. Dustin’s face busted up. But he lands nice punches inside then gets a takedown. Duffy’s nose busted up. Left hand from Dustin as they go back to the feet. They exchange in the pocket. This is a scrap, Poirier gets the better of the final exchange. 10-9 Poirier.

Round 2 – Low kick from Dustin. High kick from Duffy blocked. Dustin pushes Duffy to the cage. Poirier with the takedown and dripping blood from his nose as he tries to hold Duffy down against the cage. Poirier gets Duffy flat on his back now and is inside his guard. Elbow from Dustin, he postures up and lands several good punches and more elbows. Duffy trying to get up with 90 seconds left but Dustin has him pinned. Duffy with closed guard now but Dustin opens up with big ground and pound, looking great at lightweight. They’re talking to each other and Dustin lands some more big shots before the bell. 10-9 Poirier.

Round 3 – Duffy’s left eye is really swollen. Low kick from Dustin. Inside low kick from Dustin. The next one is checked. Right to the body from Duffy. Poirier with the takedown. Duffy goes for a leg during a scramble and locks up a heel hook. Dustin gets free and takes top control inside full guard. 90 seconds to go. Ref stands them up. Right from Duffy. Dustin’s nose may be broken. Big body shot and uppercut from Duffy but Poirier puts him on his back again. Big elbow from Dustin. 17 seconds to go. Duffy locks up a triangle but the bell sounds shorty afterward. 10-9 Poirier. Fun tough fight. Easy for me to say, right?

Drew Dober vs. Scott Holtzman

Round 1 – Straight left from Dober lands. Body kick from Scott. Left hand and clinch from Scott, pressing Dober against the cage. Knee to the body from Holtzman. Dober turns Scott to the cage. Scott turns him around, but Dober turns him back around and they continue to jockey for position. Holtzman turns him around again. … Dober with a takedown. Scott gets to his feet and Dober backs out. Dober light on his feet. Clinched and Dober with a body lock takedown. Holtzman gets his back to the cage then gets up. Dober trying to drag him back down, backs out. Holtzman stalking. Front kick from Scott. Right hook from Dober, again. Front kick from Scott. Low kick from Dober. 10-9 Dober.

Round 2 – Dober shoots, stuffed, Holtzman pushes him to the cage. Dober catches Scott with a right hook on the break. He lands another short check hook this time. Dober locks him up looking for the takedown. Lands a big elbow as he backs out. High kick from Scott and Dober ducks into it but appears okay. Nice trip takedown from Holtzman, inside Dober’s guard. Dober explodes to his feet but Scott puts him right back down. Holtzman bleeding from his forehead. Holtzman drops some elbows and punches. Dober fighting to get up but Scott is able to control him with 90 seconds to go. Dober uses the cage to get to his feet. Scott with an elbow on the break. He’s bleeding pretty heavily though. Dober goes for a trip takedown but Scott counters and ends up on top with under 30 seconds to go. Holtzman does damage with elbows and punches before the bell. 10-9 Holtzman.

Round 3 – Uppercut and a right from Scott. Big straight left counter from Dober stuns Holtzman, but he comes back with a right. Dober with a takedown. Holtzman gets to his feet, turns Dober to the cage. After an exchange Dober gets a takedown, Holtzman back up but gets taken down again. Dober on top in half guard and lands a couple hard elbows. 2 minutes to go now. Holtzman is a bloody mess, but gets to his feet. Dober backs away. Ref calls time for the doctor to check Holtzman out. He’s okay to continue. 90 seconds to go. Scott with a high kick, another. They exchange punches. Scott stalking. Two big rights from Dober. He shoots in, takes some elbows to the side of the head, but gets Scott down for a split second. Back up, clinched against the cage. Dober with another takedown, going for Scott’s back. Back to the feet, right from Holtzman. 10-9 Dober.

Nina Ansaroff vs. Justine Kish

Round 1 – Kish charges Ansaroff but gets lit up with strikes. Kish still in her face though and lands an accidental eye poke. Timeout is called. … Back at it. Ansaroff lands some shots then looks for the takedown. Kish defends, then lands a spinning elbow. Right counter from Ansaroff. Kish pressures with punches but gets tied up. She unloads a knee on Ansaroff’s face and this separates them. Kish with a trip takedown and a hard kick to the leg as Ansaroff gets up. They exchange on the feet. Kish being the aggressor, Ansaroff playing the counter game and doing very well. Close round.

Round 2 – Low kick from Ansaroff. Another. Jab from Ansaroff. Ansaroff looks much more relaxed in this fight so far. Front kick from Ansaroff. Low kick from Kish. Ansaroff connects with a left hook then a head kick and Kish is in trouble. Kish goes for a judo throw but Ansaroff defends. Low kick from Kish, counter jab from Ansaroff. Low kick from Ansaroff. 2 minutes to go. Right hand from Ansaroff. Low kick from Kish is checked. Kish misses with a hook kick, they tie up and Kish gets a takedown with just over a minute to go. Kish on top in half guard now. Ansaroff gets to her knees but Kish maintains control for the remainder of the round. 10-9 Kish.

Round 3 – Ansaroff with a takedown about 45 seconds in. Kish looking for an arm off bottom as Ansaroff works from inside full guard. She passes to side mount. Kish gets to her feet, looks for a takedown and lands a big right as Ansaroff gets free of it. Kish ties her up for a moment, then gets another takedown. 1:20 to go. Kish gets to full mount, now on the back and looking for the choke. Ansaroff escapes to top control with about 20 seconds left and remains there as Kish fights to escape. 10-9 Kish.

Kyle Noke vs. Alex Morono

Round 1 – Low kick from Noke. Morono checks the next one and wings a huge overhand right but Noke is not there. Morono with spinning sh*t. Nice short right hook from Noke inside. Spinning heel kick from Morono scores. Noke fires back, lands a nice right and left. These guys are swinging for the fences. Morono ducking and swinging. He presses Noke to the cage. They separate… Big right from Noke. They trade kicks, then Morono lands a right hand. He’s very light on his toes. Morono tries chasing Noke down at the end of the round.

Round 2 – Noke’s nose is busted up and he may be having trouble breathing out of it. Low and front kicks from Noke. Left hook from Noke, he then slips on a head kick attempt and Moron pounces. Morono all over him but Noke ties him up and jumps on his back. Morono shakes him off and takes top control. He goes for Noke’s back, but slips off and Noke is on top now and moves to full mount with 90 seconds to go. Morono goes for a heel hook. Noke defends and is back on top inside full guard. One minute to go. Knee to the body and ground and pound from Noke. 10-9 Noke.

Round 3 – Noke said in between rounds that his nose is broken. They told him not to blow it. Pace slowed a bit this round. Morono pressing forward with punch combinations. Nice spinning elbow from Noke connects to the side of Morono’s head but he just eats it. Morono still pressing. Low kick from Noke buckles Morono’s leg. Body kick and a takedown from Noke. Morono unleashes elbows to the head off his back. He goes for an armbar and it’s DEEP. Noke somehow is able to roll out and ends the round on top inside full guard, both guys throwing punches. 10-9 Noke.

Masanori Kanehara vs. Michael McDonald

Round 1 – Big right from McDonald. Kanehara pressing, goes for the takedown and gets caught in a guillotine. Kanehara seems okay, delivers some body shots and then escapes to top control, then gets to full mount. He stays on top for the rest of the round.

Round 2 – Kanehara with a takedown, in side mount, knees to body, then full mount. Half guard recovered for McDonald. Kanehara goes for an arm triangle. It’s tight, but McDonald escapes and takes Kanehara’s back, locks in the RNC and Kanehara taps out.

Tony Sims vs. Abel Trujillo

Round 1 – Right counter from Sims. Again, catching Trujillo as he tries to get inside. Another counter right followed by a left hook. Trujillo shoots for the single. Sims with a takedown but Trujillo rolls him over in a guillotine (no guard) and gets the submission finish as Sims taps out.

Diego Brandao vs. Brian Ortega

Round 1 – Low kick from Ortega. Overhand right from Brandao. He attacks with punches then gets a big slam. Ortega goes for an arm, Brandao lets him up to his feet. Hard leg kick from Brandao, right hook. Another right from Brandao. Trip takedown from Brandao. Brandao with an elbow. He lets Ortega up. Body kick from Ortega. 10-9 Brandao.

Round 2 – Left to the body, right over the top from Brandao. Body jab from Ortega, then a right hook counter from Brandao. Lots of exchanges but nothing else too significant landing for either guy.

Round 3 – Brandao comes out aggressive with punches. Ortega almost gets the takedown but gets pushed over on his back. Brandao lets him up. Ortega jumps guard. Brandao gets up. Ortega stalking. Ortega hops on a guillotine, he rolls into a triangle and Brandao taps out. Beautiful grappling performance from Ortega. Rener Gracie and his team come in to celebrate with Ortega, a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt.

Tumenov lights him up with a head kick and several punches. Right to the body and left upstairs from Tumenov. High kick from Tumenov blocked. Front kick from Larkin. Low kick from Larkin. Another. Good fight.

Round 2 – Low kick from Larkin. He’s so quick. Straight right from Tumenov. Low kick from Larkin. Switch low kick from Larkin. Low kick, front kick. Left uppercut from Tumenov. Right hand from Larkin. Nice combo from Tumenov. Leg kick from Larkin, another. Body kick from Tumenov. Then a couple body shots. Low kick from Larkin and Tumenov switches stances. Big left hooks to the body from Tumenov, digging in as he backs Larkin to the cage. Right hand from Larkin. Tumenov checks a low kick, lands a high kick, left to the body. Close fight really.

Andrei Arlovski vs. Stipe Miocic

Round 1 – Oblique kick from Andrei. Uppercut from Stipe. Left hook. He stuns Andrei with a right behind the ear, hurts him with more punches and he goes down. Stipe finishes him off with lefts to the side of the head until referee Herb Dean is forced to stop it. Damn!

Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Condit

Round 1 – Low kick from Carlos, his back toward the cage. Lawler pressing. He blocks a high kick. Body kick from Carlos. Low kick from Carlos catches on the foot. Low inside kick. Lawler attacks with punches and lands a couple. Condit tags Lawler with a right that drops him. He gets right up, elbow from Condit against the cage. Lawler was smiling when he got up. Condit lands a couple more shots. Condit looking big. Body kick. Nice right from Condit. Condit’s striking is looking beautiful. That MovNat training is paying off I think. Lawler with a counter combo. Condit pressing now. He lands a left. Nice low inside kick from Carlos. Body kick and a left hook from Condit after switching stances. Front kick from Condit. 10-9 Condit.

Round 2 – Body kick from Lawler. Body kick from Condit. Inside low kick from Condit. Outside. Knee to the body from Condit. Robbie whiffs on a couple short hooks. Condit gets dropped with a big right hand during an exchange. Robbie goes for the finish but Condit ties him up. Lawler stands and lets him up. Carlos seems relatively okay. This is a crazy fight. Both guys have been dropped now. Head kick from Condit backs Lawler up for a moment. Condit walks into a couple hard punches. Quick punches from Lawler. Condit with some leg kicks and a body kick. Condit rushes in and they both swing but neither land. 10-9 Lawler.

Round 3 – Low kick from Carlos. More kicks from The Natural Born Killer. Lawler comes in swinging for the chin hard, head kick. He backs Condit up with hard fast punches. Condit walks into an elbow. He goofs about it. Carlos moving forward. Robbie looking to counter. Robbie catches a body kick, delivers a low kick. Carlos pressing. Knee from Condit to the body, another one. Robbie drops levels for a takedown, stuffed. They separate. Right from Condit. Body kick. Low kick from Robbie. Close round.

Round 4 – Low kick from Condit. Robbie pressing. Right counter from Robbie. Carlos moving forward now. Now Robbie. Condit with an inside leg kick that buckles Lawler to the ground. He gets right up and lands a straight left. He’s getting aggressive. Condit fires back with a combo. Head kick from Condit. Condit coming in with punches, eats a Lawler combo. Condit pressuring. Body kick. Inside low kick from Condit. Body kick from Condit. Right from Condit. Robbie’s hurt, he’s talking to condit. Condit’s pouring it on with punches and a spin kick, knees. Robbie survives. 10-9 Condit.

Round 5 – Lawler probably needs a finish. Here he comes. He lands a right. Carlos gets out of there. Robbie presses again with punches. Condit gets away again and fires back. Big right/left combo from Lawler. Punch combo and body kick from Condit. Condit teeing off with crazy combos. 3 minutes to go. Lawler looking for that KO. Condit going nuts with the punch combos. He seems to have Robbie figured out. Head kick from Condit. Robbie with a big right backs Condit up. Condit fires back. He eats a huge left. Lawler is going for the kill. Condit won’t go down and he standing right in the pocket with Lawler now, they’re flailing all over the cage. 40 seconds to go. They look at the clock. Both guys bloodied and battered. They both throw everything they have into the final moments and the crowd goes insane. Both guys fully drained drape their hands over the cage while standing next to one another. One of the greatest rounds of action you will ever see. I thought Carlos won and I think the stats will show that.
