The exact date nor the venue is in place but we have learned today that undefeated Nick Newell will meet WSOF champ Justin Gaethje in July for the lightweight title. Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports broke the news earlier today.
Newell is 11-0 overall with two first round victories inside the World Series of Fighting cage. His resume reads almost identical to that of Gaethje’s. Gaethje captured the WSOF title with a first round TKO over Rich Patishnock back in January. Newell has been in the wings for a title shot and WSOF Vice President Ali Abdelaziz said he had no choice to give Newell the opportunity, stating that he had earned it.
We will wait patiently for the fight that for now is set for just over three months from now. This Saturday World Series of Fighting returns to Las Vegas when Yushin Okami and Rousimar Palhares make their promotional debut and Marlon Moraes meets Josh Rettinghouse for the bantamweight title at WSOF 9.
