UFC heavyweight Stefan Struve

The UFC on FUEL TV 5 event took place in Nottingham, England, and definitely delivered some action packed fights with nice knockouts and submissions.

UFC officials announced that four fighters would take home an additional $40,000 for their performances. Matt Wiman won “Submission of the Night”, Brad Pickett won “Knockout of the Night”, and Stefan Struve and Stipe Miocic took home “Fight of the Night” honors.

Matt Wiman was coming off a year long layoff and was taking on Paul Sass who has pretty much been a submission wizard throughout his career with 12 of his 13 wins coming via submission. Sass caught a Wiman kick seconds into the fight and took him down where the savvy veteran was able to land a nice armbar for the submission win in the first round.

Brad Pickett took on Yves Jabouin in a fight that stayed on the feet with the quicker Jabouin darting in and out with strikes as Pickett looked to counter. Pickett stepped inside and landed a devastating uppercut that put Jabouin down for the count. Pickett followed up with two hammerfist punches before the referee could put a halt to the bout. It had been a while but Pickett finally lived up to his “One Punch” moniker.

Stefan Struve took on Stipe Miocic in the main event. The first round that saw Miocic land combinations to head and body of Struve, but Struve was able to impose his will in the second round with punches and kicks before landing some crushing uppercuts that had Miocic out on his feet. The referee moved into save Miocic from further damage even though he never went down from the punishment. That was the first career loss for Miocic who was the betting favorite going into the fight.
