Is this a face you want to look at?

Olympic medalist Ronda Rousey (2-0) makes her Strikeforce debut tonight LIVE on Showtime against 30-year-old Sarah “The Monster” D’Alelio (4-1).

There is a lot of eyes watching and a lot of hype surrounding Rousey right now, and a lot of talk about her possibly being the future “face of women’s MMA”.

However, there is a 145-pound “Cyborg” that she is going to have to eventually go through if she wants to ultimately claim that throne.

Rousey is not shy about her aspirations:

“For this fight my goal is to go in and win, make it look good and make it look entertaining and look good while I’m at it. I want to try to bring a lot more attention to women’s MMA and what I think we need right now is a new face of the sport that people actually want to look at. So I’m going to try my best to be that person.”

In case you did not catch it, notice the apparent “dig” at Cris “Cyborg” Santos (10-1), the current Strikeforce 145-pound women’s champ and the undisputed current “face of women’s MMA”. Rousey says the sport needs a face people “actually want to look at”.

What say you ProMMAnow.com readers, does Rousey have a point or is she disrespecting the champ with her statement? Rousey definitely has her sights set high, but first things first, and that is Sarah D’Alelio.

  1. She’s a fu*kin idiot. Cyborg is amazing because she is a phenomenal athlete and does the sport justice. This b*tch and Gina Carano screwed over every woman in the sport by portraying the image of being some vacuous sl*t but not actually being good. I hope Cyborg beats the sh*t out of her. I’d rather see true talent and heart than some fake a** fighter that has her record stacked [like Gina].

  2. Admission: I didn’t watch the video.

That being said, straight men are the primary consumers of sports. Straight men like pretty girls. Ergo, it’s better for the sport if said sport’s face is a pretty girl.

I’m not misogynistic either… quite the contrary, really. “Pretty” is not synonymous with “vacuous slut.” For the record, I’m not focusing on the “vacuous” part either, because I didn’t watch the video. I’m just guessing that Ms. Rousey did not go into detail about her sexual agenda. No one cares about “vacuous,” because intelligence does not a successful athlete make.

  3. Hotness isn’t going to help when Cyborg is punching her in the face.

For a person who has two career professional fights, you would think she would be a little more modest.

  4. Rhonda has so much talent it just oozes from her. She has presence, confidence and intelligence. She has created controversy and debate with her reported opinions which creates fantastic positive publicity. It just so happens she’s easy on the eyes and knows that this is a great advantage for her in a male dominated sport. If Cyborg was half as pretty she would be twice as famous. No disrespect to a fabulous woman fighter but that is how this world works unless you have a bigger than life personality which I fear isn’t the case for most of us. Rhonda is just the complete package, something that will make all female fighters a little jealous but also a little more determined! Who is gonna step up?

  5. I have watched all of her fights, both amateur and professional. With that said, she has all the potential in the world to be #1…will she stay focused and do it…or get caught up in all the hype???

Personally, I think she will eventually be #1 @ 145.

  6. maybe we’ll see a great rivalry between cyborg and ronda!! that would be awesome. when this fight happens it will be the biggest fight in women’s mma history.

  7. But Alyssa, don’t you realize that Ronda actually has the serious potential that can beat Cyborg one day. Gina did not. That’s the BIG difference.

  8. I don’t see how Ronda has shown that much more potential than what Gina showed. Gina dominated everyone she was put up against (before Cyborg), and her competition was miles ahead of what Ronda has gone up against.

  9. Ronda is dissing a tough champ, and if they ever get in the ring together Ronda will pay dearly.
As for “pretty,” it doesn’t mean squat in the ring and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For me strong is beautiful, in men and women alike, and yes I’m a str8 man.

  10. Funny how she never said Cyborg’s name, but everyone knew who she was talking about…what does that tell you about what she said…must be true.
