The sport of professional mixed martial arts lost another one of its own this past Friday when 32-year-old Ross “The Grizzly” Clifton passed away from an apparent heart attack. His wife had gone to bed and left him watching TV in the recliner Thursday evening at their home in Rancho Cordova, Calif., and when she woke up on the morning of Sept. 4, 2009, Clifton was deceased.

Clifton’s former trainer, UFC veteran Cal Worsham told MMAWeekly, “He was a jovial teddy bear inside of a grizzly’s body. He was just so funny and such a character in the way you’d never expect from a giant of a man like that. He’s absolutely going to be missed.”

Ken Shamrock responds to “work” allegations

Carson’s Corner host, Bob Carson, recently interviewed ‘The World’s Most Dangerous Man’, Ken Shamrock, and asked him some tough questions. Carson did not pull a single punch as he went toe-to-toe with the legend on a number of issues, in particular the allegation that his most recent victory over Ross Clifton was a “work”.

Carson said that someone who knows Ken Shamrock and is from his area had informed him prior to Ken’s last bout the fight was going to be a “work”. This is VERY interesting since that is the EXACT impression many people had upon witnessing Shamrock’s first win in five years on Feb. 13th when he “defeated” the 360-pound Ross Clifton at WAR GODS, which incidentally is a promotion owned by Ken Shamrock himself.

Whether it is fair or not, some names just become synonymous with certain sports. In combat sports it seems as if both promoters and fans need these names in order to drum up interest in events. For example, in boxing the Mohammed Ali void was filled by Mike Tyson, and as far as MMA goes Ken Shamrock has been the torch bearer. Despite the fact that younger and more exciting stars emerge, these men remain in their sport’s spotlight well beyond their athletic prime.

Stars in combat sports get old, that is just a fact of life. As their talents and physical abilities wane, promoters’ interest in featuring the same names remains. Since the fighters are not what they once were, they are matched against continually lower and lower levels of competition.

In an strange twist of fate, Ken Shamrock recently announced in an interview with The Garv that he will be facing former Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson opponent, Bo Cantrell on February 13th on the WarGods: Valentine’s Day Massacre card. When asked who he was fighting Shamrock responded:

I’m fighting Bo Cantrell. The original plan was to fight John Marsh but he couldn’t get ready in time. So Bo Cantrell was another opponent that we also thought would be a good fight and he stepped up to the plate. So we’re going to step up and fight Bo Cantrell on February 13th in Fresno, California. And it’s going to be the Valentine’s Day massacre, Friday the 13th.

A true legend in the sport who fought at the first UFC, Ken Shamrock was last scheduled to fight against the aforementioned Ferguson on the last Elite XC card in October of 2008.
