Historic MMA Fights: Chuck Liddell vs. Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons

PRO MMA brings to you another segment of Historic MMA Fights. This edition features Chuck Liddell in his only recorded bare knuckle match. His opponent is Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons and the fight took place at the International Vale Tudo Championship 6 – The Challenge in San Paulo, Brazil on August 23 of 1998. This fight just had it’s tenth-year anniversary about a month ago; ten long hard years Chuck Liddell has been battling it out. This fight had one round only, but that round lasted for thirty minutes.

Believe it or not, there are times in the fight when you would think Liddell was strictly a lay and pray or possibly a ground and pound fighter. Liddell has numerous take downs in the fight and uses quite a bit of wrestling, which is something he has completely gotten away from. Sit back, grab a drink or a snack and enjoy watching one of the Historic MMA Fights back when rules were seen as a hindrance.

Historic MMA Fights – Evan Tanner vs. Heath Herring

In honor of Evan Tanner, this week’s edition of Historic MMA Fights is a classic bout Tanner had with Heath Herring.  It was only Herring’s second pro mma fight.  You can really understand maybe one of the reasons Herring got the nickname “Crazy Horse” by watching this.  His style was wild and flamboyant.  The fight was held in Texas at Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation 7 on October 18th, 1997.  It was Evan Tanner’s fourth professional mma fight.

It is significant because Tanner beat Herring on this night. However, it was Herring who three fights later, in Tanner’s seventh professional fight and his third of the evening, would serve him his first professional loss. Tanner fought seven times the year of this match, 1997 and he fought ten times the next year. Evan Tanner had seventeen professional fights before ever entering the UFC Octagon to become one of the most beloved and respected combat athletes of our time.

Historic MMA Fights

It’s time for another edition of Historic MMA Fights. This match took place at UFC 47 in April of 2004.  It was Nick Diaz’s second fight in the UFC and he was coming off a win over Jeremy Jackson.  It was Robbie Lawler’s sixth UFC fight and he had won all his previous UFC bouts except one, which he lost to Pete Spratt when he suffered an injury.  Lawler was starting to be considered as one of the legit contenders.  Then enters the brash, Stockton native who was not intimidated by Lawler’s power and stood toe to toe with him and what happened next was nothing short of spectacular.  Watch as the cocky Diaz starts taunting Lawler.  This fight was only going to end one way; with one man left standing.
