Scott Barrett talks XFC 18 victory, odd scoring and possible next opponent

Heavyweight prospect Scott “The Bear” Barrett (13-3) added another feather in his winner’s cap with a rather oddly-scored split decision win over Mike Russow training partner, Gabriel Salinas-Jones (5-3), at “XFC 18: Music City Mayhem” last Friday night in Nashville, Tenn. reporter Gary Thomas caught up with Barrett after the bout to talk about his performance, to get his take on the judges’ scorecards and find out what’s next.

After some heavyweight shuffling, Cain Velasquez to face Ben Rothwell at UFC 104

Although not yet officially announced, UFC heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez (6-0) is expected to face veteran Ben Rothwell (30-6) at UFC 104 on Oct. 24 in Los Angeles, Calif.

Velasquez was originally going to face big hand man Shane Carwin at 104, but as we reported a couple of days ago, the UFC brass decided to go ahead and give Carwin a title shot against Brock Lesnar at UFC 106, thus leaving space for Rothwell to slide in.

Rothwell’s plans got changed as well. He had a fight with Chase Gormley set for UFC 104 that had been picked up from Affliction’s cancelled Aug. 1 event. Gormley is now expected to face Stefan Struve on the same Oct. 24 event.

Rothwell vs. Gormley moved to UFC

A heavyweight bout between Ben Rothwell and Chase Gormley, which had originally been slated for “Affliction: Trilogy” on Aug. 1, has been moved to UFC 104 set for Oct. 24 according to a new report on

Although Rothwell has been fighting professionally since 2001 and has an impressive record of 30-6, this will be his first time inside the Octagon. It will also mark Gormley’s UFC debut, who boasts an undefeated record of 6-0.

“Affliction: Trilogy” was cancelled after Josh Barnett, who was to take on Fedor Emelianenko in the main event, tested positive for steroids. First, Barnett was pulled from the card, then the entire card was shut down, and in the end, the entire Affliction MMA promotion closed its doors.
