Conor McGregor made a triumphant return to the Octagon in January, as he was able to see off the challenge from veteran Donald Cerrone successfully. However, all eyes have quickly turned to what could lie in wait for the Irishman now, as he plots his way back to the top of UFC.
His next step could be crucial, as there is no doubt that a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov is certainly the end goal for the Irishman. The Russian handed McGregor one of his worst ever defeats, but all signs from Dana White would indicate that there is certainly interest there for a rematch. However, before we will see them two go head-to-head, we are likely to see McGregor back up his victory against Cowboy with another fight in the UFC.
One interesting spectator at cage-side for that bout in Las Vegas was Jorge Masvidal, but could we see the two of those go against each other in the Octagon this year?
Masvidal Teased The Fight
Before McGregor made his comeback in early 2020, Masvidal was already speaking about the prospect of a fight against the Irishman. It’s fair to say he wasn’t backing down from the fight, as he admitted that he would ‘break his face’. McGregor finally replied to these words after his fight with Cowboy as he noticed Masvidal at ringside.
However, the fight isn’t going to be a straightforward one to make happen, as McGregor has already indicated his desire to fight the winner of the Tony Ferguson and Khabib fight. Nate Diaz is another potential opponent that could in McGregor’s sights, which indicates that he is settled on his route back to the championship. The Irishman would need to give away weight for Masvidal bout, and it’s hard to see McGregor doing that regardless of the money that could be involved.
Who Would Win The Dream Fight?
We could still dream of the bout taking place, although it is incredibly unlikely to actually happen. Masvidal has shown over his recent fights that he has the quality to finish off opponents early, as he has beaten Nate Diaz, Ben Askren and Darren Till within the distance. That victory over Askren was also the fastest knockout in UFC history.

There isn’t much of a difference in height between the two fighters, and that would make it interesting. However, the biggest concerns that would come with supporting Masvidal would be the amount of times that he has gone the distance in championship fights. He lacks that same pedigree that McGregor has, and that would go against him. McGregor’s experience could be the decisive factor, while Masvidal would be looking to get the fight over with quickly.
Of course, that could also go the opposite way and end with a win for Masvidal. It would be an intriguing fight to watch, with both fighters having fought the same opponents over the course of their careers.
The reason why the fight is so must-see is down to the fact that there are so many variants that could impact the winner of the fight. Masvidal is certainly fresher, while McGregor is in a state of semi-retirement. However, it is always impossible to rule out the Irishman, as he has made a career of defying the odds.
