A heavyweight match-up between Gabriel Gonzaga and Matt Mitrione has been added to the UFC on FOX 13 card, scheduled for Dec. 13th at the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Ariz. This is in addition to another heavyweight bout, Alistair Overeem vs. Stefan Struve, which was announced for the card earlier this week.
Since getting submitted by Brendan Schaub in September of last year, Mitrione (9-3) has knocked out his last two opponents in the first round. First, he took out Shawn Jordan at the TUF China Finale in March, then returned at UFC Fight Night 50 earlier this month with a 41-second stoppage of Derrick Lewis.
Gonzaga (16-8) had a two-fight win streak snapped by Stipe Miocic via unanimous decision at UFC on FOX 10 in January. Prior to that he’d scored back-to-back first round KO victories; first over Dave Herman at UFC 162 in July 2013, and then over Shawn Jordan at UFC 166 in Oct. 2013.
With Gonzaga vs. Mitrione on the bill, the UFC on FOX 13 card now includes:
- Heavyweight: Alistair Overeem vs. Stefan Struve
- Lightweight: Jamie Varner vs. Drew Dober
- Middleweight: Derek Brunson vs. Ed Herman
- Lightweight bout: Joe Ellenberger vs. Bryan Barberena
- Heavyweight bout: Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Matt Mitrione
