nick diaz vs anderson silva1It was announced just last week that Nick Diaz was coming out of retirement and had signed a new three-fight deal with the UFC. Now we know who the Stockton brawler will be facing in his return to the Octagon, former UFC middleweight champ and former pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva.

UFC officials broke the news on Tuesday that Silva and Diaz will compete in a five-round showdown at UFC 183 on January 31st in Las Vegas — Super Bowl weekend.

Diaz (26-9, 1 NC) hasn’t fought since he dropped a unanimous decision to Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight title at UFC 158 in March 2013. In his fight before that he’d lost a unanimous decision to Carlos Condit at UFC 143 a year earlier. He was on an 11-fight win streak prior to that.

Silva (33-6) is also coming off back-to-back losses, and a broken leg, having been knocked out by Chris Weidman at UFC 162 in July 2013, then the infamous TKO-shin-snapping loss to Weidman in a rematch at UFC 168 five months later. Prior to that “The Spider” was known as the very best in the world, having held the UFC 185-pound title since 2006.

This is probably the most exciting match-up the UFC could make right now. Who the heck would not want to see this fight? If you’re an MMA fan, and I assume you are, you just got your Christmas present.
