rory macdonaldUFC welterweight top contender Rory MacDonald dominated Tyron Woodley at UFC 174 to went a unanimous decision. The winner of the bout could have potentially received a title shot against Johnny Hendricks with an impressive win. However, UFC President Dana White put an end to that quickly on the “UFC Tonight” show that aired after the event on Saturday night.

When asked if MacDonald earned a title shot with his win over Woodley White said:  “The Matt Brown – Robbie Lawler winner will get the title fight.”

MacDonald (17-2) has won back-to-back fights since losing a split decision to former title challenger Robbie Lawler in November. Lawler fought Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 earlier this year for the vacant welterweight title and lost a razor thin split decision. Lawler blasted top 10 welterweight Jake Ellenberger in his last fight to win via third round TKO, and will take on Matt Brown to headline the UFC on FOX 12 event on July 26. Brown has rattled off seven consecutive wins, finishing six of those opponents via TKO/KO.

I have to side with White here. While MacDonald has won back-to-back fights he has not been fighting as impressively has Lawler or even Brown for that matter, even though he has been fighting tougher competition than Brown. It’ll be interesting to see who they’ll match MacDonald with next.

Who would you like to see MacDonald take on in his next matchup?

  1. Well let’s be honest. Rory IS the best ww he just doesn’t bang skulls the way dana likes. I think he would do the same to robbie and johny as he did to tyron. He has found his grove n its fun to watch
