MFC 37[ads2][ads1]“MFC 37: True Grit” takes place this evening at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The MFC debuts their bantamweight division tonight’s with Ryan Benoit (6-1) taking on Anthony Birchak (9-1) in the main event. The winner will earn themselves a title shot later this year.

 MFC 37 play-by-play:

Jay Silva (8-7) vs. Sam Alvey (19-5)

Round 1 – Leg kick and a couple side kicks to the knee from Silva. Leg kick from Alvey. Couple more leg kicks from Silva. Right to body from Alvey. Again. Left from Silva. Jab. One two from Alvey, inside leg kick. Side kick from Silva knocks Alvey back. Cartwheel head kick from Silva, followed by a couple punches. Straight left and a hook from Alvey backs Silva up. Alvey lands the combo again. Left from Silva, body kick. Side kick to knee. One two from Alvey. They tie up, Alvey pushes him to the corner. Couple knees from Alvey. Body shots Silva backs up, shoots, stuffed. 10-9 Alvey.

Round 2 – Silva working the jab. One two three from Alvey. They reset. Leg kick from Silva. Front kick. They trade rights. Bogy shot then a big right hook from Alvey drops Silva. Alvey takes side control and goes crazy dropping a barrage of elbows. Silva ties him up to prevent Alvey from posturing up. Alvey breaks the clinch, big knee to the body, shoulder strikes and punches from Alvey. Silva gets half guard. Two minutes to go. Silva controlling his legt arm. Ref wants action. Stands them up. Silva comes forward. Jab from Silva. Alvey misses the counter. Leg kick Silva. Silva looks completely refreshed. One two from Silva. Alvey misses the counter. Silva shoots, stuffed, clinch, knee from Alvey  and a short right before the bell. 10-9 Alvey.

Round 3 – Leg kick Silva. Side kick to thigh. Leg kick Alvey. Neither guy with much head movement. Nice left from Silva, right jab. Big four punch combo from Alvey backs Silva up and he goes down Alvey finishes him off until the ref steps in. Replay shows an accidental head butt had a play into Silva going down.

Kurt Southern (11-4) vs. Mukai Maromo (8-3)

Round 1 -Leg kick from Maromo. Southern shoots, slam, lands in side control. Maromo gets right up, clinch, trip takedown from Southern. Inside full guard. Southern postures up. Passes to side control. Souther postures up with punches. Maromo gets half guard. Southern moves to side mount. Looking for a crucifix. Maromo punching from his back. North South choke from Southern, locks it in. Maromo hanging tough. After a half minute or so Maromo taps out.

Jason Zentgraf (7-1) vs. Luke Harris (9-2)

Round 1 – Touch gloves. Harris with a judo throw, lands in side mount a la Ronda Rousey with a headlock. Zentgraf locks in a hook and Harris lets go the headlock. Brief scramble and Harris ends back up in side mount. Harris locks on a very tight and awkward neck crank/shoulder choke and Zentgraf taps out. Amazing.

Ryan Benoit (6-1) vs. Anthony Birchak (9-1)

Round 1 – Birchak shoots in for a single, gets a double leg slam. Benoit right back up and lands a knee in the clinch. Birchak misses a flying knee. Benoit scores a trip takedown and takes Birchak’s back as he gets to his feet. Both hooks in from Benoit. Birchak spins him off and takes top control inside guard. Birchak working the ground and pound in the corner. Full mount from Birchak. He lands several punches as Benoit scoots under the ropes. The ref moves them to the same position in the center of the cage. Benoit gives up his back and Birchak continues landing punches, goes for the choke, Benoit defends it. Body triangle from Birchak, locks in the choke again. Benoit gets to his stomach and survives. Birchak in side mount landing occasional punches. Benoit somehow escapes and takes Birchak’s back, locks in the choke. Birchak escapes, Benoit locks it up again. Birchak escapes and sweeps, ending up on top inside guard. Round of the night. 10-9 Birchak.

Round 2 – Body kick from Birchak, lands an uppercut, shoots in and gets the takedown and lays on the ground and pound. Takes full mount. Benoit goes for a knee bar. Trying to crank it but Birchak escapes, takes top position and landing several punches. Benoit gives up his back. Birchak landing more punches, moves to side mount, locks up a keylock as he moves to mount, switches to an armbar. Benoit escapes it! Benoit on top inside half guard and now Benoit gets full mount!! Crazy! Benoit flattens him out with punches. Birchak tries to get up but Benoit continues with punches, goes for an armbar, loses it and Birchak is on top now and takes full mount. Postures up with punches and elbows. Birchak trying to set up a mounted triangle. He rolls over with Benoit stuck in it. 15 seconds to go. Benoit somehow survives yet again! 10-9 Birchak. They had to drag Benoit to the corner!

Round 3 – Birchak gets an easy takedown, full mount right away. Birchak postures up with punches and elbows as Benoit tries to cover up. Birchak goes for an arm triangle and this allows Benoit to get free and to his feet. They scramble and Birchak regains full mount. Birchak goes for an armbar, straightens it out but Benoit follows his corner’s instruction and escapes. Now has top position. Benoit looking for a leg lock. Drops down for a kneebar, loses it. Takes Birchak’s back and drops punches as Birchak gets to his knees. Birchak gets up with Benoit on his back. Birchak tries to reverse with a standing kimura as it goes to the ground still looking for it and time is up. PMN has it 10-9 for Birchak and 30-27 for Birchak. Great fight.
