Bellator 85 takes place this evening at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif., and marks the promotion’s debut on Spike TV. Two title fights are on the line, as well as quarterfinal round match-ups for Bellator’s season 8 light heavyweight tournament.

Bellator 85 play-by-play:

Cleber Luciano vs. Mario Navarro

Round 1 – Navarro ends up on his back about halfway through the round, Luciano stacking. Luciano gets side control, north/south, back to side control. couple of hammerfists and big punches. Navarro goes for an armbar with a minute to go. Luciano pulls free. Now inside guard. Navarro goes for the armbar again but Luciano quickly pulls out. Back inside guard and unleashes some wide punches. Navarro punches back from bottom. PMN scores it 10-9 Luciano.

Round 2 – Navarro misses a head kick, Luciano puts him down easily in the first 30 seconds. Luciano gets to half guard. Now side control. Luciano is a Rickson Gracie black belt by the way. Luciano gets full mount briefly, now north/south. A few punches, back to side control. Knee to belly, bull guard. Navarro escapes to his feet, high kick scores. Luciano puts him right back down. Luciano inside full guard, postures up with punches. It’s a solid steady workmanlike performance from Luciano so far. Upkick scores for Navarro. Luciano now in half guard with under a minute to go. A few punches from Luciano. He’s not doing much damage, but definitely controlling the fight. Navarro gets up, clinched against the cage. Big knee from Navarro as Luciano searches for the single. PMN scores it 10-9 Luciano.

Round 3 – Leg kick Navarro. Head kick attempt from Navarro just misses, clinch, knee to the body of Luciano. Luciano gets a body lock, pushes him to the cage, drops for a single. Navarro defends. He picks him up as Navarro jumps guard. Knee on belly. Side control. Half guard. Body shots from Luciano. Side control. Luciano looks for the back, back to half guard, staying just busy enough. Full mount, punches, Navarro gives his back and covers up. Back to half guard and unloading punches until the bell sounds for Luciano. PMN scores it 10-9 and 30-27 for Luciano.

Joe Williams vs. Jamie Yager

Round 1 – Left from Williams. Leap in uppercut from Yager misses. Overhand right misses. Jab, shoots from Williams, gets the double leg. Yager gets right up. Williams stays on him looking for the double, switches to a single, turns the corner and puts Yager down. Williams on top in half guard. Yager holding the neck. Body shots Williams. Williams controlling, landing occasional punches, not much on them. Just staying sort of busy. Yager trying to make something happen. Yager taking a lot of shots now, trapped on the bottom. Yager not able to do anything. Big John kept warning him to move and Yager does nothing. Big John stops it and Yager is pissed. Big John said I told you four times to move. Yager said something like “I moved my head”. Yager wasn’t really taking much damager but he just couldn’t do anything to improve position.

Michael Guymon vs. Savant Young

Round 1 – Leg kick Guymon. Check out our pre fight scrum video with Joker. Brief clinch, Young misses a big right and Joker puts him down. Young gets right up though, but only for a second as Joker trips him back down. Joker on top in half guard. Elbow from Guymon, left hand, another elbow. Joker unloads a couple left hands, postures up with more left hands. Young gets to his knees and Joker looks for his back. Body shot. Young’s back to the cage, body shots from Guymon, knee to the body. Now Guymon goes for his back but cage is in the way. Young gets up, presses Guymon to the cage. Clinch, knee from Guymon, again. Again. Young complains about a low blow but Joker stays on him, clinch, trip takedown, top control, half guard. Elbow, elbow and a right from Guymon. Young’s back to the cage, gets up, eats a knee from Guymon. It’s all Guymon in round one. PMN has it 10-9 for the funny man.

Round 2 – Leg kick inside from Joker. Young is much smaller man. Leaping knee from Guymon. Leg kick Young. Young catches Guymon with a one two as Guymon leaps in with a knee. Guymon gets over anxious  and rushes in straight into a left hand from Savant Young. Joker is launched into the air and goes down flat on his back. Young lands one more right hand, an inconsequential shot before the ref stops it.

Emanuel Newton vs. Atanas Djambazov

Round 1 – Nice exchange early on, Newton’s back to the cage as Atanas unloads. Moves back to the center. Head kick from Djambazov is blocked. Follows up with punches. Uppercut from Djambazov, body kick. Newton with a right. Left hook from Djambazov. Body kick Newton. Right hand counter, side kick. Djambazov looks to be breathing hard. Body kick from Newton, nice exchange. Newton presses him to the cage, body lock takedown. Newton inside guard. Newton postures up with punches.Djambazov goes for an armbar. Newton tries to slam his way out, picks him up for another attempt. Newton is safe now inside guard. Djambazov gets to his knees, Newton goes for his back, ends up on top inside guard as Djambazon spins around. Mount from Newton, scramble, back inside guard. Newton postures up with a big right then moves to side control. PMN scores it 10-9 Newton.

Round 2 – Body kick Newton. Djambazov head hunting. Newton with a counter body punch. Left hook Djambazov. Push kick from Newton. Djambazov backs up as Newton chases him down, he lands an uppercut but Newton puts him down. Scramble to the feet briefly, but Newton ends up in full mount on the ground and unloading punches. Nice big right on the chin with 3:00 to go. Djambazov gives up his back, Newton sinks in the choke and Djambazov taps quickly as he is spent. Newton runs a lap around the cage.

J.J. Ambrose vs. Brian Warren

Round 1 – Ambrose comes out like a ball of fire, gets Warren down unloading punches and takes Warren’s back with both hooks in. Upkick from Warren scores big. Warren unloads a flurry of punches from off his back. Ambarose inside full guard, body shots, trying to pass but Warren controlling from bottom. More body shots from Ambrose, and Warren  holds on with the full guard, closed. Nice hard body shots from Ambrose opens the guard. Ref stands them up. Leg kick Ambrose. Leg kick from Warren, he rushes in and gets dropped with a big right. Ambrose jumps on him as Warren turtles up. Ambrose with hammerfists and a big knee. Warren rolls over and gets to safety with full guard, landing elbows off his back. PMN scores the round 10-9 Ambrose.

Round 2 – Leg kick Ambrose. Leg kick Warren and Ambrose lands a right that puts Warren down. Ambrose jumps on a guillotine and Warren taps. Ambrose stands, runs his fingers through his hair (twice) and that’s that.

Jason Lambert vs. Hector Ramirez

Round 1 – Big exchanges, Lambert finding success with his left. Ramirez opens Lambert up under his right eye with a punch. Leg kick Lambert. Leg kick Ramirez as Lambert pushes him to the cage. Body shots from Lambert. Knees from Lambert in the clinch. Lambert backs up, eats a right. Ramirez shoots, stuffed. Clinch war, big shots from Lambert, he backs Ramirez up and lands a big left hook that stuns Ramirez, he drops levels but Lambert pushes him to the cage and punishes him. Ramirez puts him down but Lambert throws up a triangle, switches to a straight armbar and Ramirez taps out.

Joe Camacho vs. Aaron Miller

Round 1 – Camacho (red trunks). Leg kick Miller. Left hook/uppercut thingy from Camacho. Miller pushes him to the cage. Clinch battle. Uppercut from Camacho. Dirty boxing against the cage. Nice judo trip takedown from Miller, ends up on top inside Camacho’s guard. Camacho uses the cage to walk his way into an armbar attempt. Miller pulls out. Postures up and stacks Camacho with some big punches. Big knee to the body as Camacho gets to his knees. Knee to the body. Miller riding his back, lands some nice punches to the side of the head. Now on top in half guard. PMN scores the round 10-9 Miller.

Round 2 – One two Camacho. Miller scoops him with a big slam. Now inside full guard. Camacho throws up his legs. Miller tries to pass, gets to half for a second before Camacho recovers full guard. Both guys striking. Nice elbows from Camacho off his back. Miller stands, spins, back in full guard. Miller goes for a Sakuraba double hammer, misses. Body shot, stands, spins. Camacho gets to his knees. Miller pushes him back down, now in half guard. Moves to side control. Miller stands over Camacho, tries for a punch, back to the ground, ends with Camacho on his knees at the bell. PMN scores it 10-9 Miller.

Round 3 – In 30 seconds it’s right back to the ground with Miller on top. Miller has done very little damage from the top. Jimmy Smith (commentator) has it one round a piece. Now Miller unleashes with some nice elbows that score. Ref calls time after Camacho kicks Miller (grounded) in the head. After a time out, they start back with Miller on top inside guard. Miller postures up with punches, stacks him. Camacho gives up his back, Miller riding. Camacho rolls for an arm. Goes for a single, clinched against the cage. Knee to the body from Camacho. Miller goes for a takedown and Camacho goes for a guillotine but doesn’t have guard and loses it. Miller on top in half guard dropping an elbow or two. Camacho recovers full guard. Nice elbow from Miller. Let’s be honest. Miller is not winning any fans with this performance. It wasn’t pretty but he should get the W. PMN scores it 10-9 and 30-27 Miller.

Light Heavyweight tournament quarterfinal

Seth Petruzelli vs. Jacob Noe

Round 1 – My buddy William MacDonald fought Noe, and lost, a few years ago. Noe has some good boxing. Seth grabs a single. Noe is from Memphis by the way. Seth kicks the ankle of Noe. Knee to the thigh from Seth, he backs out. Left hook, straight right from Seth snaps Noe’s head back. Seth takes a poke in the eye but ref didn’t see it and tells them to keep fighting. Leg kick Seth. Nice left from Seth snaps the head back. Seth shoots, Noe sprawls, jumps on Seth’s back and unleashes punch after punch. Seth is gripping his knee with one hand, covering up with the other and the ref stops it. Noe’s left eye is almost swollen shut.

Round 1 – Left from Pitbull. Pitbull told us he would kill Curran if it goes to the ground. Leg kick Pitbull inside, again. Curran switches stances. One two leg kick Pitbull. Curran being patient, body kick, caught, Pitbull tosses him, lets him up without attacking. Pitbull on the outside. Curran throws a left hand. Inside leg kick Pitbull. Curran gives two back. Inside leg kick Pitbull. Nice right scores for Curran on the chin. Pitbull blocks three. Left hook, straight right from Pitbull lands on forearms. Right counter hook from Curran. Left jab connects. Inside leg kick Pitbull. Left jab Curran. One minute to go. Front kick, right from Curran. Left hook from Curran. One two three leg kick from Pitbull, leg kick. Curran blocks a head kick. Right from Pitbull. One two three more and Curran blocks them. One last kick from Curran blocked by Pitbull. Pitbull was the busier fighter, landing the more significant shots in round one. Round 3 – Nice head kick from Pitbull but partially blocked. Right hook Pitbull. High kick, blocked. Jabs score from both. Good defense from Curran. Body shot from Pitbull. Right hook to the body, double jab from Curran to the face. It’s all kickboxing so far. Nice head kick from Pitbull, blocked, but knocks Curran back. Exchange in the pocket, leaping knee from Pitbull. Right hand, body shot. Accidental head butt halts the action for a moment. Left hook Pitbull. Jab counter from Curran. Pitbull pouring it one with 20 seconds left. Both guys landing big punches but I have Curran winning the round and the fight. That’s a great debut for Bellator on Spike, makes me think of Griffin vs. Bonnar and the significance that fight had for UFC on Spike. Could this be a foreshadowing of what could happen for Bellator with the move to Spike?

Round 1 – Left body kick, left jab from Babalu, clinched. PUshes Zayats to the cage. Exchange knees in the clinch. 4 minutes. Zayats looking for an outside trip, no dice. Big John wants work. Knee from Zayats to the thigh, again. Body shot Babalu. More knees from both. Ref separates them. Leg kick Babalu, right Zayats. Leg kick Babalu. Nice right from Zayats snaps Babalu’s head. Babalu lands a low blow accidentally. Left hand Zayats after the brief timeout. Body shot Zayats. Big right from Babalu stuns Zayats, he clinches up to clear his cobwebs. Babalu presses him to cage. Exchange knees. Babalu thinks about dropping levels. Zayats holding on, looking for a break it seems. And he gets it. Big leg kick Babalu. Body kick Zayats. Leg kick Babalu. Left from Zayats. Front kick Babalu. Zayats shoots, stuffed. Spinning backfist lands behind the head and rocks Babalu. Zayats goes after him with punches landing a big left that drops Babalu. He swarms him with hammerfists until Big John is forced to stop it! Great finish by Zayats with just a few seconds left in the opening round!

Michael Chandler (c) vs. Rick Hawn

Round 1 – Leg kick Chandler. He’s using lots of feints. High kick, blocked. Hawn on the outside. Hawn misses an uppercut. Leg kick Chandler, eats a right.  Chandler with a quick single leg, gets it easily. Body shots from Chandler. Elbows from Hawn off his back. Closed guard. Chandler in half guard. Hawn gets to his knees. Chandler with knees to his thighs, to the ribs. Hawn on all fours. Chandler with knee after knee to the thighs. Hawn with a judo throw attempt, lands a big right. Chandler fires back. PMN scores it 10-9 Chandler.

Round 2 – Chandler with low hands, eats a left hook. Chandler shoots, big big slam. Chandler inside full guard. Elbows off his back from Hawn. Chandler drops some elbows from top. Hawn gets on one knee and Chandler jumps on his back with one hook in. Hawn gets up but Chandler picks him up and slams him back down. Hawn tries to get up but Chandler jumps on his back, locks in the choke, they fall backward and Hawn taps quickly. Chandler, once he saw the opening, locked that choke on, got it under the chin and that was all she wrote.
