ORLANDO, Fla. — “XFC 14: Resurrection” takes place this evening at the UCF Arena in Orlando, Fla. Team Oxendine’s Nate Jolly will face former WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner in the main event. XFC 14 airs LIVE on HDNet starting at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT).

Bruce Connors vs. John Mahlow

Round 1 – Leg kick from Connors. Mahlow goes for a high kick, then puts Connors on his back very quickly. Connors has his head but he pops out. He moves to side control.Connors gets his feet on the cage, tries to sweep but Mahlow keeps him under control. Connors gets his back to the cage briefly but eats a punch or two as Mahlow puts him back flat. Connors with closed full guard. Body shots from Mahlow. Connors gets cut from an elbow and is bleeding pretty heavily above his left eye. Connors not trying to get up and is eating some nasty elbows as Mahlow works on the cut. Connors kicks him off but Mahlow is right back on him in side control, moves to north-south, back to side control. Connors recovers half guard. Body shots from Mahlow as Connors sits up and gets to his feet. Connors goes for a guillotine, readjusts, backs out. Connors with a right hand. 10-9 Mahlow.

Round 2 – Head kick from Connors is blocked. Leg kick from Mahlow, again. On the inside now, very hard. High kick is blocked by Connors. Inside leg kick from Mahlow. Corner got Connors’ cut under control. Front kick from Connors misses. Inside leg kick from Mahlow. Big outside leg kick from Mahlow. Throws a high kick that’s blocked. Outside leg kick. Leg kick from Connors, but Mahlow gives him a real one back. Connors with an inside leg kick. Mahlow kicks, Connors with a spinning kick and both miss. Leg kick Mahlow. Connors has been off a year so the ring rust likely played a factor in the lackluster showing.

Mike Bernhard vs. Carlos Mikey Gomez

Round 1 – Leg kick from Bernhard but he eats a punch for the trouble. Gomez shoots, stuffed and eats a knee as Bernhard holds him in a front headlock. Gomez puts one hand on the ground to protect himself from the knees. Bernhard throwing knees to the shoulders though and is pushing him against the cage. Gomez stands up in the clinch now. Knee to the thighs from both fighters. Ref separates them. Big leg kick from Gomez. He shoots, sprawl from Bernhard. Gomez relentless with it and puts Bernhard on his back. Bernhard looking for a kimura, lets it go as Gomez lays inside a closed triangle full guard. Body shots from Gomez. Ref stands them up. Bernhard with a body kick, Gomez shoots and Bernhard turns him around to the cage. Knees to the thighs from Bernhard. 10-9 for Bernhard.

Round 2 – Leg kick from Gomez and eats a right counter. Gomez shoots, nice sprawl from Bernhard and Gomez ends up on his back with Bernhard inside full guard. Bernhard stands and tells Gomez to get up. He does, shoots, stuffed, puts one hand down to prevent a knee to the head. Knees from Bernhard to the shoulders. Another big knee. Gomez stands, eats a knee and a punch. Front kick from Bernhard. A huge leg kick from Gomez actually knocks Bernhard down. Gomez attacks and gets caught in an armbar. He picks Bernhard up for the slam but still has the armlock, not extended yet though. Now it’s extended and Gomez pulls out. Gomez in side control, moves to full mount, beautifully done. Gomez bucks, gives up his back and Gomez sinks the arm under his chin and this fight is over. Wow! Bernhard was doing very well on the feet but gets out-matched on the ground. And it all started with the big leg kick. Bernhard really did not defend that choke very well, he just seemed to give him his neck as a gift almost. Strange.

They  just announced after the fight that Mikey Gomez’s father passed away THIS MORNING. I can’t even tell you the focus and guts it would take to show up and perform like he did in this fight. He didn’t want anyone to know and did not tell anyone until after the fight. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mikey Gomez and family.

Nicolae Cury vs. Elijah Harshbarger

Round 1 – Overhand right from Harshbarger as he shoots, Cury gives him a toss to the ground and ends up on top in half guard. Body shots from Harshbarger. Cury trying to pass, moves to mount. Harshbarger uses the cage to flip over, Cury transitions to an armbar and forces the tap quickly. Beautiful finish. Great jitz from Cury who hails from American Top Team.

Josh Clark vs. Reggie Pena

Round 1 – Pena gets an immediate takedown. On top in half guard. Clark using a half butterfly. Pena stands up, Clark grabs his ankle. Pena gets free. Right hand off his back by Clark. Body shot from Pena as he tries to move to side control. Clark gets up and Pena shoots immediately, takes Clark for a ride and slams him. Pena on top in half guard. He locks on a D’arce, lets it go and stands. Clark is up, lands a knee from the clinch and backs up. After an exchange Pena shoots and gets his third takedown of the round. Pena in side control. Knee from the bottom by Clark hits Pena in the ribs. Clark gets on his knees, Pena scrambles, stands up. Pena grabs a kick but eats a couple big punches before putting a leg behind Clark’s single leg still on the ground and trips Clark back down. Clark goes from an armbar but time is out. 10-9 Pena. Fun fight.

Round 2 – They exchange some nice punches, Clark shoots and puts Pena on his back up against the cage. Clark inside full guard, lands some body shots. Pena pushes him off and gets to his feet, he picks Clark up and slams him. Ref gives Clark his mouthpiece back. Clark throws up an armbar. Pena  pulls out as he stands. Clark lands a right, then a left. Leg kick from Clark. Front kick to the mid-section. They tie up and Clark gets a trip takedown, Pena bounces right up. Knee from Clark, then a kick to the thigh. Left hand from Clark. Right from Pena. They tie up. Pena gets a takedown and is inside full guard. He postures up and lands about four big right hands. He stacks Clark up. Clark looks for an armbar but Pena pulls out, stands up and lets Clark up. They tie up, big knee from Pena to the head. Clark gives him one back from the Thai clinch. Pena throws a combo but Clark covers up at the bell. 10-9 Pena. Great fight.

Round 3 – Left hand from Clark but Pena fires back a combo landing about three. They tie up and Pena puts him on his back, puts big right hands to the body. Now some lefts to the face. Pena stacks him up. Clark looks for an armbar but Pena stands up, holding a foot. Up kick from Clark. Pena comes in with punches, moves to side control, lands a couple elbows, feigns a D’arce., lands an elbow, more elbows. Clark gets to his feet, lands a nice one two and gets his own takedown. Clark inside Pena’s full guard with just over a minute left in the fight. Nice right hand from Clark, moves to side control. Pena gets to his feet, lands a nice shot and Clark is hurt, he covers up on the ground and Pena attacks with punches. Clark gives up his back, now in quarter mount. Pena lands several punches until the bell sounds. 10-9 and 30-27 for Pena as I see it.

Marianna Kheyfets vs. Molly Helsel

Round 1 – Helsel has a lot more experience and has fought a lot of big names. Leg kick from Helsel. Body kick from Kheyfets. Helsel catches her next kick and puts Kheyfets on her back. Kheyfets with a full closed guard. Helsel stacks her up. Kheyfets using kicks off her back to defend. Helsel lays down inside her guard. She closes guard. Helsel postures up with some nice elbows. It should be noted that Helsel has a lot more fights than Kheyfets who only has three pro fights. Big kick to the thigh from Helsel who is standing over Kheyfets. She tries to pass to side control but Kheyfets catches her in full guard. Kheyfets punching her from off her back. Ref stands them up. One minute left. Left hook counter from Helsel. Kheyfets with a left. Helsel misses a one two, lands a leg kick. Nice right from Kheyfets, lands  a right after missing a front kick. Leg kick from Helsel, straight right from Kheyfets. 10-9 Helsel.

Round 2 – Lg kick from Helsel. Jab from Kheyfets. Left hook, straight right from Kheyfets. One two from Kheyfets. Body shot from Kheyfets, then a right. A couple leg kicks from Helsel. Leg kick from Helsel. Kheyfets slips on a punch, lands a nice counter right, jab. Leg kick from Helsel. Left hand from Kheyfets, then a right. Right hand from Kheyfets scores. Helsel staying a bit busier it seems though. Left jab from Kheyfets. Round ends and Helsel’s face is bloodied up. Not a ton of shots landed in this round but Kheyfets should have it 10-9.

Round 2 – Leg kick from Helsel, right from Kheyfets. They both land stiff rights and Helsel’s nose is leaking blood. Leg kick from Helsel. Big overhand right from Helsel. Stiff left from Kheyfets. Leg kick from Helsel. Another overhand right from Helsel. Left hand from Kheyfets. Again. Body shot from Helsel. Leg kick from Helsel, countered with a right. Kheyfets times a perfect lightning fast takedown lands on top in half guard, moves to side control, stands up and lets Helsel up. Kheyfets gets another takedown, inside full guard with less than a minute to go.  Leg kick from Helsel. Stiff jab from Kheyfets, and Helsel gives her one back. 10-9 and 29-28 for Kheyfets.

Scott Barret vs. Carmelo Marrero

Round 1 – Schiavello keeps calling Barrett “the man with no neck”. These guys are former training partners. Leg kick from Marrero. Marrero probing with a jab. Big knee from Marrero is a low blow, he lands about four punches after that before the ref can stop it. He gets a time out though. Ref restarts them. Leg kick from Barret, they tie up, knee from Marrero. Barret shoots, stuffed. Pushes Marrero to the cage. They trade knees to the body. Underhooks from Barret. Right from Barret. Marrero backs out, lands a right. Barret tries for a takedown, stuffed. Right hand from Marrero. Knee from Barret, he backs Marrero to the cage and they have a nice exchange. Nice right from Marrero as they move to the center. Barret lands a nice right, these big sluggers let em fly and Barret backs him to the cage. Barret backs out to the center. Stiff jab from Marrero. Barret pushes him to the cage. He backs out to the center. Barret wipes his eye. Big right from Marrero. Barret shoots for a double, muscles him to the ground and is in quarter mount. A couple of little elbows from Barret. 10-9 Marrero. Replay shows a beautiful right from Marrero lands right on the eye that Barret is squinting.

Round 2 – Left from Barret and Marrero fires back landing a few. Left from Marrero, then a one two. Barret’s face is bloody. But he can take a shot. Knee from Marrero, Barret pushes him to the cage. Knee from Marrero. Right from Barret from the clinch. Marrero backs out and Barret follows. They trade some nice shots, big uppercut from Barret as he pushes Marrero to the cage. Ref halts the action as Marrero eats a low blow. Touch gloves. Left from Barret, big right from both guys. Barret backs him to the cage, gives him some knees to the body. Knee from Marrero to the body. Again. Barret gets underhooks. Ref separates them. They grab the back of their heads and trade right hands a la Don Frye. Barret pushes him to the cage, body shot. Knee to the body, again from Marrero. Barret backs out and lands a nice right but he’s slowing down. He backs out and lands a couple more shots. Goes for a takedown but can’t get it. 10-9 Barret. Fun fight.

Round 3 – Marrero cut under his left eye, they hug. Right hand from Marrero, again. Again after a test of strength. They keep using pro wrestling tests of strength and punches. Marrero’s cut is opened up now. Knee from Marrero and Barret’s nose is a bloody mess and looks broke. They tie up against the cage as Barret lands an uppercut. Knees from Marrero. Ref separates these tired heavyweights. Their punches are slower than a crippled turtle at this point. They tie up after a few punches then move back to the center. Nice body kick from Marrero. Barret pushes him to the cage. Body shot. One and a half minutes to go. Ref separates the clinch. They tie up in the center. Uppercut from Barret, again, again. They move to the center, big right from Marrero. Left hand. They trade shots and Barret pushes him to the cage. Marrero backs out and they trade shots until the bell. These are some tough big boys that left it all in the cage. Great showing. I give the final round to Marrero and the fight to Marrero 29-28. However, it comes down to that takedown at the end of round one and if they gave him the round for that. If they did, Barret will win it. It’s a close one.

That’s a very surprising score. I really didn’t see Marrero winning round two.

Jamie Varner vs. Nate Jolly

If Varner loses this fight, he could retire. He almost retired after his last fight.

Round 1 – Left hook from Jolly. Right from Varner. Left from Jolly. Heads hit hard as they both shoot in. Varner goes for a leg, Jolly is free as they stand in the clinch, takedown from Varner. He lands a big right from inside full guard that hurts Jolly, Varner postures up over Jolly and rains down right punch, left punch, right punch, left punch, right punch and Jolly is out. Varner called it. He said he should win it in about two minutes.

  1. Good recall of the Mahlow v. Connotations fight except for the fact that your forgot to mention that Mahlow was out for a year and a half recovering from massive knee surgery. If anyone should have had ring rust it should have been mahlow.
