I came across this photo while walking around Chicago the other night. It appears as if Affliction was planning on marketing their third card as The United States versus The Soviet Union. This raises some problems. If Josh Barnett is truly replaced by Vitor Belfort, as most insiders believe, the whole America takes on the world angle goes out the window.

Secondly, I wonder if anyone asked Fedor Emelianenko about how he feels about representing the former socialist republic. I do not know much about the heavyweight king pin’s politics, but a nickname like “The Last Emperor” doesn’t seem very communist.

Didn’t Rocky IV come out over 20 years ago? Perhaps it is time to get past the Cold War when promoting fights. Then again, what do I know?

  1. That’s pretty ridiculous. Not only was Rocky IV a couple decades ago, but the SOVIET UNION was dissolved in 1989/1990? Fedor, undoubtedly, would find this very offensive. I don’t know what they were thinking, and I hope he gets a chance to see that.

  2. In fact, I remember, I believe Bas Rutten on Inside MMA asking him about Rocky 4, and Fedor, still calm and expressionless, elaborates on how that movie was extremely offensive to him.
