On Sun., Aug. 23, 2009, Ryo Chonan made his homecoming to the Japanese DEEP organization by taking on Jutaro Nakao in the main event at “DEEP – 43 Impact” at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo. In the first round, Chonan picked Nakao apart with powerful leg kicks. In rounds two and three, Chonan took Nakao to the canvas and used ground and pound attacks to grind out a unanimous decision. It was a sweet victory for Chonan who was released by the UFC following a loss to T.J. Grant back in April.

There were two titles on the line at “DEEP – 43 Impact.” Takafumi Otsuka upset the champ Dokonjonosuke Mishima by unanimous decision to take home the featherweight title, and in his first bantamweight title defense Masakau Imanari defeated Tomohiko Hori also by unanimous decision.

Ryo Chonan vs. Jutaro Nakao headlines “DEEP – 43 Impact” on Aug. 23

“DEEP – 43 Impact” takes place Sun., Aug. 23 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. In addition to two title fights on the card, Ryo Chonan (15-10) will have a Japan homecoming as he gets back to action in his first bout since being released from the UFC earlier this year.

Chonan went 1-3 in the UFC after arriving in 2007. All his bouts within the UFC went to decision, with losses to Karo Parisyan, Brad Blackburn, and most recently to T.J. Grant at UFC 97. He did defeat Roan Carneiro at UFC 88 via split decision.

Chonan will be taking on the very tough Jutaro Nakao (22-14-4) in the main event. Nakao is a 13-year veteran who defeated Tony DeSouza at UFC 33 via second round knockout. He then went the distance with Sean Sherk at UFC 36, losing a unanimous decision.

Recap
Last week was bittersweet for me. In my first weekend picking fights for PRO MMA (promma.info) I went 14-5 with 2 no contests, which is a rate of 74%. However, my 3-2 performance on the Strikeforce main card was not good enough to take first place in the PRO MMA Staff Picks. That honor was held by my fellow colleagues Dusty Adams, Tim Thompson, and Jack Bratcher.

This weekend there are a few quality match-ups including the finals of a light heavyweight tournament and a featherweight title fight, but most of the fights are tune-ups. That means that come Monday there will be no excuse for a bad picking percentage. So, here are this weekends picks, and as always if you think you know better, let me know in the comments section.
