UFC Nashville

Tonight at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, light heavyweight contenders Glover Teixeira and Ovince Saint Preux will face off in the UFC Fight Night 73 main event. A win over Teixeira would move #6 ranked OSP into the top 5 of the light heavyweight division and a victory for Glover could warrant a potential title shot. There’s a lot on the line so you can expect a war between these two men.

In the co-headliner, Michael Johnson and Beneil Dariush, who are both currently riding 4-fight winning streaks, will engage in a lightweight showdown.

UFC Fight Night 73 round-by-round updates:

Sirwan Kakai vs. Frankie Saenz

Round 1 – Saenz starts off with an inside leg kick, but Kakai fires back with a leg kick of his own. The two men go back and forth on the feet. Saenz lands some heavy knees to the body, Kakai responds with a trip, gets Saenz up against the cage and secures a takedown. Saenz manages to get back to his feet and the men exchange strikes until the end of the round.

Round 2 – Saenz attempts  a takedown, but Kakai manages to defend against it. Saenz throws some wild punches and kicks, but doesn’t really land anything. Kakai accidentally pokes Saenz in the eye causing a brief pause in the action. Saenz scores a takedown, Kakai quickly returns to his feet. Kakai uses his jab and manages to follow up with a takedown. Saenz gets back up to his feet and lands a big punch. The fighters go back and forth on the feet until the end of the round.

Round 3 – Saenz lands a few knees while briefly in the clinch, they separate, exchange, then Saenz scores a takedown and works strikes from the top. Saenz takes Kakai’s back and tries to go for a choke, but he can’t lock it in. Kakai returns to his feet, but is pressed up against the cage by Saenz. The men separate and exchange briefly, then Saenz begins to grind Kakai against the cage once more. Kakai reverses, but Saenz secures a reversal of his own and throws a few elbows. Kakai lands a body shot and then trips Saenz. The men go back and forth exchanging strikes. Saenz looks for the takedown but doesn’t have the energy to drive it home. A close fight.

Willie Gates vs. Dustin Ortiz

Round 1 – Ortiz goes for an early takedown, Gates escapes to the fence but with Ortiz pressing his back towards the cage. Ortiz eventually gets Gates to the ground and briefly throw strikes from the top. Gates returns to his feet and the men begin to go back and forth with strikes. Ortiz scores another takedown and goes for an arm triangle but gives up and moves into mount instead. Ortiz works the body from mount, Gates is unable to go anywhere, Ortiz lands some punches from the top.

Round 2 – Gates’ corner tells him to forget leg kicks and work his punches. He follows instruction and begins the round with some strikes. However, Ortiz pushes forward and gets Gates up against the fence. Ortiz works the body with knees and punches, he keeps grinding Gates against the cage and eventually scores a takedown. He moves into mount and drops some big punches and elbows from the top. Ortiz transitions to the back and works for a rear naked choke. Just when it seems as if he has it locked in, he lets it go, moves back into mount and lands some big punches from the top to finish the round.

Round 3 – Ortiz begins this round by stalking Gates down. He gets a takedown and transitions to Gates’ back. Ortiz lands elbows and punches from the back. Gates has no answer for the strikes as Ortiz has his arms tied up, his only option is to cover up. The ref tells Gates that he will stop the fight if he does not defend. Ortiz continues to bombard Gates with strikes until Mario Yamasaki calls a stop to the action

Chris Camozzi vs. Tom Watson

Round 1 – The fighters tie up into the clinch and exchange body shots. They tussle for an advantage in the clinch, then separate. Camozzi lands a nice combination, then manages to get Watson in a guillotine choke, but Watson manages to escape. They go back and forth on the feet. Camozzi trips Watson and takes his back on the ground. Watson tries to scramble free, but Camozzi stays on him. Camozzi goes for a rear naked choke, but Watson breaks free and gets back up to his feet. Watson lands a low blow and Camozzi is given time to recover. The action restarts and Watson lands a nice combination. They tie up in the clinch and then the round comes to an end.

Round 2 – Watson pushes forward and gets Camozzi up against the fence. Watson lands yet another low blow, this time it’s a knee, rather then a kick. Camozzi is given time to recover. John McCarthy deducts a point from Watson. Watson comes out of his corner aggressively throwing some big kicks and punches. With a point now deducted Watson is showing an increased sense of urgency and is pushing forward. Camozzi goes for a guillotine choke, but Watson breaks free. They go back and forth on the feet. Watson lands a nice knee, they clinch up and exchange shots to the body. Watson scores a takedown just before the end of the round.

Round 3 – The men go back and forth exchanging strikes. Watson is now keeping his hands very low, throwing big punches. Camozzi lands a nice elbow and follows up with a takedown. Watson looks tired. Camozzi moves into side control and then scrambles around to Watson’s back. Watson gets back to his feet. Camozzi presses Watson up against the fence, then scores another takedown. They return to their feet, then Watson throws elbows and knees from within the clinch.

Oluwale Bamgbose vs. Uriah Hall

Round 1 – Bamgbose is moving in and out with his strikes, throwing punches and kicks, Hall trips Bamgbose with a leg kick and begins to work from the guard. Bamgbose’s mouth guard falls out so referee Herb Dean briefly stops the action while he puts it back in. The action restarts and Hall begins a heavy barrage of strikes, knocking Bamgbose out with a stiff left.

Ray Borg vs. Geane Herrera

Round 1 – Borg scores a big takedown and begins to work from the guard. Borg moves into half guard and works for side control. Borg threatens with a guillotine choke. Herrera rolls out and goes for a heel hook. Borg defends and works his way back into half guard. Borg eventually secures side control and moves into mount. Borg is relentless with his ground game, but Herrera is able to fend off his submission attempts and avoids any serious damage.

Round 2 – Borg earns another quick takedown and quickly moves into mount. He locks in a guillotine choke, but Herrera remains calm and gets out. Borg ends up in half guard and works to advance his position. Herrera threatens with a triangle from the bottom but Borg shrugs it off and works from the guard. Borg transitions into mount but is bucked back into guard by Herrera. Borg finishes the round with some strikes from the top.

Round 3 – Much like the start of the first and second rounds, Borg begins with a quick takedown. Herrera lands a short elbow from the bottom and opens Borg up. Blood starts spraying out of Borg’s eyebrow and the referee calls a doctor in to take a look. Everything is ok and the action resumes. Borg is back in the guard and is now a lot more aggressive, landing strikes from the top. Herrera sweeps Borg and moves into mount briefly, but Borg reverses and ends up back on top. Borg works into side control, then ends up back in half guard. A frustrated Herrera continues to try and break free, but the fight ends with Borg on top.

Sara McMann vs. Amanda Nunes

Round 1 – The women exchange strikes, trying to find their range. Nunes throws a spinning kick, but McMann catches it and takes Nunes down. They quickly end up back on their feet. Nunes lands a hard right hand followed by a flurry of punches and McMann drops to the ground hurt. Nunes moves in, takes her back and secures a rear naked choke. McMann taps out and it’s all over.

Timothy Johnson vs. Jared Rosholt

Round 1 – The fighters go back and forth with their wrestling against the cage. Nothing much is happening so referee Herb Dean separates the men and restarts the action in the center of the octagon. Rosholt scores a takedown and threatens with a choke, but Johnson breaks free. Rosholt works from side control and lands some strikes to the body and some elbows to the head. Not a very exciting round.

Round 2 – This round begins with more aggression as Johnson throws, but misses, some big punches. Rosholt presses Johnson against the cage and works his wrestling. Johnson reverses, but Rosholt soon turns things around again. Johnson manages to knock Rosholt to the ground but is unable to gain control. Rosholt manages to get on top and begins to work from half guard. Rosholt goes for a shoulder lock, but is unable to get the tap. Johnson break free and the round comes to an end.

Round 3 – Johnson comes out swinging but Rosholt uses his wrestling once again to press Johnson against the cage. Rosholt manages to get a takedown but doesn’t do much damage from the top. Johnson manages to get to his feet and Rosholt continues to grind him out against the fence. Herb Dean separates the fighters and resets things in the centre of the octagon. Both men are tired and it really shows. Rosholt presses Johnson back into the cage again and the crowd begin to boo. Johnson manages to reverse and eventually moves away from the cage. Johnson starts winging punches and manages to connect on more then one occasion. Rosholt weathers the storm but gets taken to the ground by Johnson before the fight comes to a close.

Sam Alvey vs. Derek Brunson

Round 1 – Brunson presses Alvey up against the cage. Brunson lands a couple of nice uppercuts and works some dirty boxing from within the clinch. They break away from the fence and Brunson starts swinging for the fences. Alvey’s chin withstands the first onslaught, but as it continues Brunson eventually drops Alvey and continues to punch him in the head. Referee Mario Yamasaki steps in to stop the action, but Alvey isn’t happy and appeals the stoppage, but it’s too late.

Beneil Dariush vs. Michael Johnson

Round 1 – The fighters begin by exchanging strikes, trying to find their range. Dariush lands a nice leg kick. Dariush shoots in for a takedown, but it is stuffed by Johnson. Dariush throws a punch, Johnson counters and stuns Dariush. He tries to follow up with more punches, but can’t catch Dariush with a finishing blow.

Round 2 – They begin the round going back and forth. Dariush lands a flying knee, but Johnson fires back with a counter punch. They exchange strikes. Dariush shoots in for a takedown but Johnson stuffs it.

Round 3 – Johnson’s speed and striking seems to be working well. Dariush is trying to shoot for takedowns but Johnson is stuffing each one. Dariush lands a strong leg kick and a knee to the head. Johnson is starting to incorporate shots to the body. They exchange and the fight comes to an end.

Ovince Saint Preux vs. Glover Teixeira

Round 1 – Teixeira completes an early takedown. OSP scrambles to his feet but is pushed back to the fence by Glover. Teixeira scores multiple takedowns during the round with OSP landing some heavy shots to the body and head during moments where they were on the feet.

Round 2 – Glover shoots for a take down, Saint Preux reverses and pops back up to his feet. They start to exchange strikes, Glover lands a body shot and Saint Preux fires back with punches to the head. Teixeira scores a takedown and works from half guard. Teixeira is throwing elbows from the top, trying to ware down Saint Preux with strikes. OSP uses the cage to stand up. Teixeira presses OSP up against the fence. They separate and Saint Preux starts to throw big shots before the round comes to an end.

Round 3 – Teixeira begins this round with strikes, then sees and opportunity and scores a takedown. He works from half guard and once again begins grinding out OSP with shots to the body and punches/elbows to the head. Teixeira postures up and lands some ground and pound. Teixeira transitions to the back and locks in a deep rear naked choke. OSP doesn’t tap so the ref calls a stop to the action when he sees his lights going out.
