It was revealed on Tuesday night’s edition of “Inside the Octagon” that Chris Weidman either wants a title shot next, or the opportunity to fight the winner of the UFC 152 matchup between Michael Bisping and Brian Stann. According to Ariel Helwani, Weidman views a matchup between himself and the winner of the Bisping/Stann fight as a number one contenders fight with the winner fighting Anderson Silva in early 2013.
UFC middleweight Alan Belcher voiced that he would like to fight Chris Weidman next. Belcher is a underrated fighter that’s been flying under the radar for a very long time and has always lobbied for top opponents. However, Weidman believes that a win over Belcher doesn’t push him farther up the ladder and isn’t intested in taking that fight. It’s a common problem for Belcher it seems, he’s a tough guy that seemingly can’t get the big fight that’ll put him amongst the top ten middleweights with a win. Belcher’s out with an injury and looks to return to action sometime around November.
The other factor in this is that it isn’t 100% certain what will happen should Michael Bisping put away Brian Stann impressively. Bisping is a much larger PPV name than Weidman and has been lobbing for his shot against Anderson Silva as well. The problem for Bisping is that he’s coming off a very close loss against Chael Sonnen, and his four consecutive wins prior to the loss don’t feature any middleweights near the top ten. So it’s possible that Weidman could face a victorious Bisping next, or if Bisping is given the shot then he could face someone like Alan Belcher. A Brian Stan win probably means that Weidman would indeed face him next with the winner getting a shot at Anderson Silva.
Also it was revealed that middleweights Mark Munoz and Hector Lombard want to fight one another next. Check the segment out below:
