UFC 136 LIVE results and play by play

HOUSTON –“UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III” takes place today at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, and will feature UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard in the main event.

Also on the card in the co-main event is a featherweight title fight between 145-pound champ Jose Aldo vs. no. 1 contender Kenny Florian. Also, Brian Stann takes on Chael Sonnen.

Aaron Simpson vs. Eric Schafer

Round 1 – Simpsin drops Schafer early with punches. He backs up as Simpson kicks at his legs. Ref lets Schafer up. Seems to be okay but bloody under his left eye. They square off, big overhand right from Simpson is blocked. Again. Again Simpson throws a right that is blocked. They tie up momentarily before moving back to the center. Schafer misses with big punches as does Simpson. Straight left to the body by Simpson. Schafer grabs a collar tie and lands a knee but at a cost as Simpson tees off with punches. He then lands a right on Schafer and another big combo including a body shot by Simpson. Another big combo from Simpson. Left hook from Schafer but Simpson is unaffected. Simpson with a final combo. Simpson wins the round decisively 10-9.

Round 2 – Simpsons corner told him to keep throwing the overhand right. And he does right away and connects. Body / head combo from Simpson. Another overhand right plus a straight right behind it scores again for Simpson. Left hook from Schafer lands. Another overhand right from Simpson scores. Right hook from Simpson. Schafer still moving forward. Body / head combo from Simpson, then concentrates back on the body, stopping Schafer’s forward movement momentarily. Right to the body from Simpson. Body/head combo again from Simpson scores. They only thing that has really worked for Schafer is that left hook but just not enough on it. Schafer clinches and throws a knee. Big right hand from Simpson wobbles Schafer, man he’s got a chin, but his face is busted up. Schafer misses a knee after eating a combo. Huge overhand right from Simpson drops Schafer. Simpson lets him up at the bell. 10-8 Simpson.

Round 3 – There’s a new Octagon girl tonight, Vanessa Hanson, with Arianny and Chandella. Left hook from Simpson. Overhand right from Simpson scores. Body shot from Simpson. The crowd is very quiet right now, sounds like Pride. Right to the body from Simpson. Schafer misses with a left hook. Body/head combo from Simpson. Schafer still moving forward for most of the fight. Simpson with an uppercut slips off the chin. Right to the body and a left hook from Simpson. Big overhand right connects. And Schafer still moves forward. 20 seconds to go. No kicks in this fight so far. Strange fight. 10-9 and 30-26 for Simpson as I see it.

Tiequan Zhang vs. Darren Elkins

Round 1 – Zhang connects first with a combo. Elkins drops down for a shot but Zhang locks on a guillotine. Elkins ends up on top in half guard. Elkins postures up with punches. Misses a couple big rights. Zhang defending with his legs and arms. Right by Elkins. He postures up, moves to half guard. Elkins trying to advance but Zhang keeping him tied up. Elkins locks on a neck grand momentarily, lets it go. Lands a left and some elbows with his left, body shots from Elkins. Elkins moves to side control and full mount. Zhang gives up his back. Elkins has both hooks in. Rolls him over face down, lands some punches as Zhang is in straight defense mode. Elkins still fighting for the choke, lands some body shots and rights to the head but time is up. 10-9 Elkins.

Round 2 – Elkins shoots, stuffed, again. Zhang drops down for another guillotine and once again Elkins ends up on top with his own guillotine attempt. They scramble as Zhang turtles up. Elkins takes his back, forces his hooks in and we take up where we left off last round and Elkins is landing right hands softening him up with punches and more punches. Elkins ends up on top in half guard. Moves to side control, elbow as Zhang gets up to his feet. They square up. Elkins shoots for a single. Once again Zhang drops down for a guillotine and it wasn’t even close – Wouldn’t you learn by now? – Elkins is now on top in half guard dropping elbows on your Chinese head. Geez. Zhang sweeps but that doesn’t last long as Elkins puts him back on his back after about .2 seconds and is now punishing Zhang with punches to the head and body, and shoulder shots. Zhang tries to explode out but Elkins in clear control here and he rides out the final seconds on top. 10-9 for Elkins.

Round 3 – Nice right from Elkins. He shoots, stuffed, again. Elkins grabs a single and once again Zhang drops down for a guillotine — good God man. This one is tight though, no dice and Zhang is dumped on his back and we are back to status quo with Zhang eating big punches to the face and body. Elbows and hammerfists from Elkins here. Elkins passes to full mount as Zhang recovers half guard momentarily. Elkins moves to side control. Zhang gives up his back and is eating punches from Elkins. Elkins has his back with a triangle body lock. Elkins softening him up with big right hands, still riding his back. Zhang is defending well though as he has done for the previous two rounds. Thirty seconds left. Ten seconds. 10-9, 30-27 for Elkins.

Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic

Round 1 – Miocic wearing CroCop shorts. He lands an inside leg kick, again. Miocic with another inside then an outside leg kick. Miocic is the taller fighter. He counters with a combo, then lands a leg kick. He has a five inch reach advantage, counters with a left straight. He takes Beltran down with a single. Now has one hook in, backs out, clinched as Beltran stands. Beltran with some rabbit punches. Miocic backs out. Right hand from Miocic. Leg kick from Miocic. Big leg kick from Miocic. Inside leg kick from Miocic. Beltran seems very timid. Leg kick from Miocic. Little leg kick from Beltran. Beltran with a left. Miocic 10-9.

Round 2 – Beltran comes out flashing a jab and punches, lands a right but Miocic easily puts him on his back with a single. Miocic eases down on top of Beltran. He goes for an Americana and Beltran is up to his feet. Beltran with his hands down and stalking. Lands a body shot and puts Miocic on his back. Beltran lands some big shots and Miocic is back to his feet, clinched up. They exchange knees. Elbow from Miocic and a nice left hook from Beltran on the break. Body shot from Beltran as Miocic has slowed a bit. But he easily takes Beltran back down and is on top in half guard, dropping an elbow. He moves to side control but Beltran pops up to his feet. They trade leg kicks. Knee from Miocic. Miocic looks tired now. Leg kick and a punch from Beltran. Miocic fires back with punches. Beltran tries for a trip takedown. They rest a minute in the clinch. Right hand from Beltran. Big right from Miocic, again. Rogan says he has sucked Miocic into his fight. Right from Beltran but Miocic fires back. Knee from Beltran and elbows. Close round and the crowd erupts. 10-9 Miocic.

Round 3 – Leg kick from Miocic. Uppercut from Miocic. Leg kick. Beltran is pushed back as he tries to clinch. Miocic shoots and is stuffed. Clinched against the cage and Beltran is bleeding all over Miocic. Knee from Miocic. He drops levels and puts Beltran down, gets full mount. Beltran gives up his back and gets to his feet. Knee from Miocic. Miocic backs out of the clinch. Right hand from Beltran. Body combo from Beltran. Left jab from Miocic, leg kick. Knee to the noggin from Miocic. He shoots, stuffed but Beltran can’t get up and rolls to his back as Miocic lays on him with elbows. Miocic in side control, drops an elbow, thinks about a shoulder lock, puts some knees to the ribs. Drops some punches on Beltran’s face, full mounts. Beltran gives up his back with 10 seconds left and they punch it out until the bell. Miocic should have it 10-9, 30-27 or at least 29-28.

Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round 1 – Leg kick from Pettis. Right hand from Stephens. Pettis with his hands low and chin up. Leg kick from Stephens. Pettis hunting, eats a jab and Stephens puts him on his back. Pettis throws his legs up and holding Stephens’ head. He pushes Stephens off and gets up. Leg kick from Pettis, lands in the groin area. Right hand from Pettis connects. Stephens connects with a punch and a leg kick. Pettis with two leg kicks. Leg kick from Stephens. Pettis hunting. Leg kick. High kick from Pettis blocked. Clinch against the cage. Knee to the body from Stephens. He grabs a single against the cage. Grabs a double and dumps Pettis. One minute to go. Body shots from Pettis as Stephens  tries to control Pettis. Pettis makes it to his feet. They separate. Big right by Stephens. Pettis with a one handstand kick that misses. Stephens shakes his finger “no” and Pettis mean mugs him at the bell. 10-9 Stephens.

Round 2 – Inside leg kick from Stephens lands in the groin area. Ref restarts them. Leg kick from Stephens. Body shot from Stephens. Pettis shoots and puts Stephens on his butt. Elbow from Stephens from the bottom. Pettis in side control, now in half guard. Pettis stands over him and throws a big right. Pettis tries to takes his back but ends up on top in half guard. Stephens’ nose bleeding. Pettis moves to mount briefly. Stephens gets to his feet as Pettis holds on to his body. Knee from Pettis as he holds on. He drags Stephens down as Stephens lands some rabbit punches to the body. Pettis drags him back down. Stephens with half guard. He gets back up to his feet using an underhook. Clinched, Pettis drops down for a takedown as Stephens looking for a kimura. One minute to go. Pettis now has his back with a body triangle locked on. Thirty seconds to go. Stephens rolls to his knees now back to his back as Pettis hands on. Stephens escapes with punches before the bell. 10-9 Pettis.

Round 3 – Right hand from Stephens is blocked. He shoots, puts Pettis on his back, inside full guard. Pettis lands a couple punches off his back, throws up his legs. Stephens stands, lets Pettis up. Leg kick from Pettis. Head kick, blocked. Pettis shoots, ends up on his back looking for an armbar. Stephens stands, Pettis trips him and clinches as he stands. Pettis looking for a single and puts Stephens on his butt with his back to the cage. Stephens gets to his feet. Pettis attacks with strikes and puts Stephens back on his butt with his back to the cage. Stephens softens him up as he gets to his feet. Pettis still holding on with a body lock. Pettis tries a trip takedown and Stephens ends up in top position. Pettis gets to his knees and stands. Pushes Stephens to the cage. Knees to the thighs from Pettis with under a minute to go. Rogan just said Melendez is coming to the UFC. Stephens puts Pettis down for a split second before the bell. Close round and close fight. 10-9 Pettis, 29-28 Pettis as I see it.

Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago

Round 1 – They tie up, knee from Maia. He pushes Santiago to the cage. They exchange knees and separate. Leg kick from Santiago as Maia throws a left. Inside leg kick from Santiago. Maia hunts with punches. Right hand from Santiago but he gets put on his back. Maia on top in half guard. Santiago with butterfly guard, he kicks Maia off and gets to his feet. Maia with underhooks, tries to drop for a single but Santiago defends and backs out. Leg kick from Santiago. Maia clips him with a right hook that stuns Santiago. Flying knee from Santiago, Maia catches it and puts him on his back. Maia in half guard. Santiago tries to push him off with his feet, Maia inside full guard. One minute to go. Santiago with an up kick as Maia postures up. Back inside full guard now, drops an elbow, up kick from Santiago as Maia drops some hammerfists. 10-9 Maia.

Round 2 – Head kick from Santiago blocked. Inside leg kick. Right hand from Maia. Left hand from Santiago. Left hand from Santiago connects. Maia swings big and misses. They both swing big and miss. Maia pushes Santiago to the cage, gets a single leg takedown. Santiago with butterfly guard. Maia on top in half guard, postures up with punches. Two minutes to go. Up kick from Santiago as Maia dives in with punches, he postures up again. Tries to pass guard but Santiago prevents it with his butterfly guard. Maia in half guard. Body shots from Maia. Santiago defending well but he’s losing this round on the bottom. 10-9 Maia.

Round 3 – Inside leg kick from Santiago. Maia shoots, gets the takedown but Santiago gets right up. Clinched against the cage, Maia grabs a single but Santiago escapes. Santiago throwing a right. Leg kick from Maia, he shoots, gets a body lock from the back. Blind elbow from Santiago. Maia tries to wrestle him to the ground, gets him to one knee but he gets back up. Maia finally puts him down and is in half guard. Two minutes to go. Body shots from Maia and elbows. Santiago with an up kick as Maia stands over him. Maia drops down with elbows, trying to move to side control. Santiago still has a knee in there, now gives up side control. North-south position, over to side control from Maia. Full mount, but Santiago gets butterfly guard. Maia in half guard with a few elbows before the bell. 10-9 and 30-27 for Maia.

Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon

Melvin dances to the cage, slapping hands with the fans all the way there. He jumps all around the cage and shakes hands with Lauzon as he comes into the Octagon.

Round 1 – Melvin is amped. Lauzon is not. At least not showing it. Right hand and an uppercut from Melvin and a left kick to the body. Lauzon hurts him with a left hook and takes Melvin’s back quickly, locking in the choke. They roll and Melvin taps out.

Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan

As Garcia enters he circles the cage, touching gloves with Phan. Then kneels down for a prayer.

Round 1 – Huge applause for Garcia. Both guys connect with punches. Leg kick from Garcia. One two from Garcia. Front kick from Garcia and a double jab. One two from Garcia, leg kick. Phan trying to get inside but Garcia keeping him at bay. Big combo from Phan. He drops Garcia with a punch. Phan drops inside his full guard. The ref stands them up. Leg kick from Garcia, again. Phan fires back with punches, lands a left hook. Leg kick from Garcia. Straight left from Phan. Leg kick from Garcia. Phan attacks with a combo. Garcia fires back, spinning back kick, misses. Garcia goes for a takedown. Phan with a whizzer and they square back up. Big left hook to the body, then to the face from Phan. Phan getting inside. Body kick from Garcia. Straight left from Phan, again. Nice right from Phan. Leg kick from Garcia. Straight left from Phan, again, big right on the back of it. Garcia poked in the eye. They halt it for a second. Round 2 – Greg Jackson told Garcia he needs to shorten his punches up; he’s throwing outside punches on the inside is what Jackson told him. One two from Garcia. Leg kick. Leg kick inside. Phan hunting, lands a jab. Jab from Garcia, body / head combo from Phan. Garcia with a spinning backfist that Phan ducks. They exchange several combos each, both landing some decent shots. Big left to the body from Phan, jab from Garcia. Phan backs him up with a left, right. Body shot from Phan. Uppercut from Garcia. Left hook to the body from Phan. Left hook to the face. Left hook again from Phan. Nice combo from Phan. One two from Garcia misses. Phan lands a big left hook to the body that stuns Garcia. Garcia swinging big and missing. Phan out-pointing him with punches in bunches. Phan with left jabs to the face, scoring. Phan lands a nice combo to the face. Garcia misses a high kick. Garcia’s face is bleeding. Leg kick from Garcia. Leg kick from Garcia. Phan picking him apart with punches. 10-9 Phan.

Round 3 – Garcia smiling, they touch gloves. Combo and leg kick from Garcia. Garcia comes out strong throwing strikes, leg kick. Phan starts popping him with punches. Garcia with a one two leg kick. Phan fires back with punches, left to the body. Garcia drops him with a left hand, backs him against the cage with big punches. Phan is still there. Garcia looking for the finish. Big body shot. Left and an uppercut from Garcia. He was putting everything into those punches and there are three minutes to go. They clinch up for a brief rest. Phan goes back to working the boxing. Garcia is tired. Eats a combo from Phan. Phan touches him up with a combo. Garcia with his hands down. Phan puts him on his back. Boos from the crowd with 90 seconds left. Ref stands them up to the cheers of the crowd. Big leg kick from Garcia. Misses a spinning backfist and stumbles. Body shot from Phan. Leg kick from Garcia. Left hook from Phan. Garcia goes for the takedown. Stuffed. Leg kick from Garcia and Phan lands a combo. They swing it out to the bell. Better than their last fight. Garcia 10-9 for the round but Phan should have it 29-28.

Rogan interviews them both at the same time after the fight and asks them if they want to do it a third time. He says he would like to see them fight at least once a year from now on. Phan said no more rematches but Garcia said he would do it again in Texas.

Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann

Round 1 – Oh snap. There’s a ginger reffing. They come out quick. Chael shoots, clinches against the cage. Knee from Chael. Stann turns him around, knees to the thigh. Right hooks to the body from Stann. Still clinched as Sonnen pushes him against the cage. Knee from Chael. Stann with a body shot. Chael gets the trip takedown. Side control from Sonnen. Knee to the body from Sonnen, again. Again with a knee. Stann tries to explode out. Sonnen goes for a mount, stuck in half guard. Stann gets to his knees. Sonnen takes his back, both hooks in and looking for the choke. Stann pushes him to his back and gets full mount. Stann gets to his knees. Sonnen takes his back as Stann stands up. Sonnen hanging on his back. He gets slammed down and Sonnen gets on top in half guard. Sonnen in full guard, he stands up with big punches and is in half guard now. Less than a minute to go. Sonnen with big elbows and punches and Stann covers up. Chael ends in side control taking the round easy 10-9.

Round 2 – Stann might be realizing he’s in there with a different kind of wrestler. Stann throws a leg kick and ends right up on his back against the cage. Sonnen has the best ground and pound in the UFC right now. He is like Tito Ortiz 2.0. He has Stann mounted now with almost four minutes left. Stann recovers half guard but is still eating punches and elbows. Ref stands them up much to Rogan’s  hatred. Stann catches Sonnen with a big right coming in. Sonnen stays relentless, clinches, picks Stann up over his head and slams him, landing in side control. Sonnen locks on an arm triangle, he hops over Stann’s body to the other side. Stann taps out and Sonnen stands up and walks away cool as if Clint Eastwood just killed a man with a six shooter. Never cracks a smile. Screen shows Anderson Silva smiling and clapping.

Rogan asks Sonnen some superfluous question following the fight. Sonnen completely ignores the question, grabs the mic and says,

“Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck. Super Bowl weekend I’m calling you out Silva but I’m upping the stakes. I beat you, you leave the division. You beat me, I leave the sport forever.”

The absolute best promo ever done in pro MMA right there my friends. Hands down. Classic.

UFC Featherweight Championship
Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian

Round 1 – Touch gloves. Leg kick Florian. Head kick blocked by Aldo. Inside leg kick from Florian, again. Aldo throws a combo and Kenny backs up. Again. Again. Leg kick from Florian. Florian shoots, stuffed, and eats some big punches as Aldo backs him to the cage. Florian shoots, pushes Aldo to the cage. Aldo gives him some right hands. Florian grabs a leg as Aldo balances on the other. Florian gets a takedown but Aldo bounces right up, repeat. Florian has a body lock from behind. Aldo moves out to the center. Combo punches from Florian as Aldo covers up. Aldo punches, Florian ducks and shoots, stuffed. Body shot from Florian, pushes Aldo to the cage. Grabs a single lifts Aldo who balances on one leg. Florian still pressing with 30 seconds to go. Knee to the body from Florian, elbow from the clinch. One more elbow before the bell. Florian 10-9.

Round 2 – Florian ducks a punch, stuffed. Lands a right, and a leg kick. Aldo being very patient. Kenny ducks for a shot, stuffed. Aldo needs to get going here. Kenny ducks and shoots, stuffed. Aldo blocks a body kick. No kicks from Aldo. Leg kick from Florian. Boos from the crowd. Aldo is doing NOTHING. Inside leg kick from both guys. Aldo with another. He lands a right to the chin countering Kenny’s kick. Jab from Florian. Florian throwing at least. Jab from Florian. Inside leg kick from Aldo. Kenny gives him two back. Head kick, blocked. Jab from Aldo as Florian circles. Head kick from Aldo is blocked. Aldo tosses him to the side. Throws a head kick that misses. Florian backs him up with punches, shoots, stuffed. Round 3 – Florian’s corner said Aldo is getting tired. Leg kick from Florian. Again. Body kick. Uppercut from Aldo and a right, another big right. Inside leg kick and front kick from Florian. Aldo swings and misses. Inside leg kick and big right from Aldo. Aldo catches Florian coming in with a right. Right from Aldo. Jab from Florian. One two punch from Aldo. Florian shoots, stuffed and gets mounted. Aldo on top in half guard as Florian scrambles. Aldo trying to advance position. Florian lands a punch from his back. Aldo hanging out on top. One and a half minutes to go. Aldo stands up as Kenny up kicks. Florian gets up. Eats a little right. Florian shoots, pushes him to the cage. Florian drops levels. 10-9 Aldo.

Round 4 – Leg kick from Florian. Aldo checks one. Florian checks one. Right hand Aldo. Leg kick Florian. Leg kick Aldo. Florian clinches up, Aldo gets out. One two from Aldo. Florian shoots, stuffed. Knee from Aldo as they clinch against the cage. A few left hands from Florian, still clinched with 3:00 to go. Florian grabs a single, Aldo hops out. Florian shoots, stuffed. Stuffed again. Aldo is mounting no offense. Florian pushes him to the cage. Knee from Florian. Again. Again. Florian drops for a single, holding a leg. Aldo lands a right as he gets free, a left. Florian shoots, pressing Aldo to the cage. Thirty seconds to go. Aldo backs out. Right hand from Aldo. Neither guy throwing anything big. Very perplexing. Aldo throws up his hands after the round… why I have no idea. 10-9 Florian.

Round 5 – They slap fives. Then go to boxing. Leg kick from Florian. He seems to have Aldo confused. He pushes Aldo to the cage. Holds a leg. Aldo backs out. Florian goes for a knee as Aldo puts out a left and Kenny falls to his back. Florian kicking off his back. Florian attacks Aldo’s leg as Aldo lays on him in half guard. Aldo mounts Florian. Florian escapes out the back. But Aldo catches him and settles into half guard. Aldo tries to mount. Florian is up. Two minutes to go. I think the fight is dependent on this round. Leg kick from Edgar. Maynard ties him up, hops on a single as Edgar grabs a leg. Edgar lets it go and goes back to boxing. Leg kick from Edgar, Maynard gives one back. Edgar with another one. Round 4 – Edgar’s corner tells him the fight is tied up right now. Right hand from Edgar. Leg kick from Edgar. Edgar looks for the takedown, stuffed. Maynard with a right. Jab from Maynard but Edgar lands a big one two. Maynard shoots, stuffed. Right hand from Edgar backs Maynard up. Uppercut from Edgar. Nice right from Maynard snaps Edgar’s head back. Edgar stuns him with a right hook on the break that stuns Maynard and Edgar follows it up with another right that drops him and he finishes it off with a few more and Gray Maynard is face down and unconscious. He doesn’t even know what happened. What an incredible comeback from Edgar. De Ja Vu of their last fight.
