Originally Yoshihiro Akiyama was set to face Chael Sonnen at UFC 128. However, due to Sonnen’s legal trouble, Nate Marquardt has stepped into the fight. ESPN reported the contest on Thursday.

UFC 128 will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on March 19.

Akiyama came to the UFC with an impressive resume on the Japanese circuit. He won his promotional debut over Alan Belcher at UFC 100, but then dropped his next two fights against Chris Leben and Michael Bisping.

Prior to his UFC career, Akiyama won the K-1 Hero’s light heavyweight tournament. He defeated Melvin Manhoef in the finals to claim the victory. Akiyama also holds victories over Denis Kang and professional boxer Francois Botha.

In the fall of 2009, it seemed like Marquardt was on the track towards a second shot at middleweight champion Anderson Silva. He had won three fights in a row over Martin Kampmann, Wilson Gouveia and Demian Maia. However, in 2010 Marquardt went only 1-2 with losses to top contenders Sonnen and Yushin Okami.

In the headlining bout, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will defend his light heavyweight title against former champion Rashad Evans. Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber will also make his UFC debut on the card against former bantamweight champion Eddie Wineland.
