Torres takes home $44K for dismantling Tapia

The WEC’s Bantamweight champion, Miguel Torres, earned $44,000 for his win over a tough, but clearly outmatched, Manny Tapia.

Torres controlled the fight from the start with a brilliant display of boxing prowess, using his reach advantage to pepper Tapia with stiff jabs and combinations en route to a second round TKO stoppage.

In his WEC debut, former IFL Featherweight champion, Wagnney Fabiano, earned $22,000 with a third round submission of Akitoshi Tamura. Mark Munoz was paid $20,000 for his TKO stoppage of Ricardo Barros.

WEC 37: Torres vs. Tapia – results & play-by-play

Joseph Benavidez vs. Danny Martinez (BW)
Rd.1 – Martinez looks to get the fight down but Benavidez stuffs it. Benavidez lands a nice left to the face followed by a front kick to the chin. Benavidez throwing nice combinations. Right roundhouse kick to the body by Benavidez. Martinez gets Benavidez down but he bounces back up. Benavidez’s style is very reminiscent of Faber, whom he trains with. Nice judo throw by Benavidez and has Martinez in a headlock from side control as the bell sounds. Great round for Benavidez who was called the “Breakout Star of 2009” recently by Big John McCarthy on Inside MMA.
Rd.2 – Benavidez continues to push the pace and his striking looks good. His stand up looks very similar to the way Faber fights. Nothing very significant lands for either fighter in this round but Benavidez clearly has the edge due to keeping the pressure on and controlling the bout.

Torres a heavy favorite at WEC 37 on Dec. 3

The WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) returns to the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV on Wednesday December 3, 2008.

The card is headlined by a WEC Bantamweight Championship Title Fight between undisputed king, Miguel Torres and Manny Tapia.  The fact that Torres is the Bantamweight king of the world is non-negotiable.

The Chicago native has lost only one fight in his nearly nine year professional career and that loss was five years ago and it came by decision.  It took 18 fights before anyone could take Torres past the second round. In Torres’ thirty-four wins, he has only been to a decision five times; he has 20 submission wins and 7 wins by (T)KO.
