In a battle between two of the UFC’s young guns at featherweight, Dustin Poirier and Erik Koch put on a show to kick off the main card of UFC 164. After dropping Koch early, Poirier survived a near fight-ending triangle choke attempt to seize control of the bout on his way to a unanimous decision victory.
Stipe Miocic spoiled Roy Nelson’s chances of getting closer to a title shot, as he thoroughly dominated “Big Country” over three rounds of action in the co-main event of UFC 161. Miocic battered Nelson on the feet on his way to a lopsided unanimous decision victory with scores of 30-27 across the board.
Fabricio Werdum took one step closer to getting a shot at UFC heavyweight gold, engaging in a grueling battle of attrition with the legendary Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the main event of UFC on FUEL TV 10. Werdum overcame the constant pressure of “Big Nog” to win by armbar at 2:41 of the second round.
Chael Sonnen did all of the talking, but it was the champion that did all of the damage once the cage door closed. Jon Jones used Chael Sonnen’s own game plan against him as he repeatedly took the challenger down and battered him with a brutal ground-and-pound attack forcing a stoppage at 4:33 of the opening round.
