“The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir”- Episode 4 Re-Cap

By Denny “The Mad One” Hodge

Tonight it’s the Lightweights that take center stage, and not just as it relates to the fight for this week. The show starts with the guys watching UFC 84: Ill Will, with BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk. It’s not long during the viewing before the “Junie and Shane Nelson Show” overshadows the pay per view event. The fun starts with a bottle of wine then quickly escalates to shots of Tequila. Junie starts antagonizing anybody from the Red team, by talking smack and throwing peanuts at anyone within throwing range.

Soon after, Junie is moving to the light heavyweights and starts talking smack to Kyle Kingsbery. Kyle throws peanuts back at Junie in retaliation, and Junie follows up with a nice drink to Kyle’s face followed by the glass itself. The glass breaks and cuts Kyle on his arm and we are off to the races.

TUF 8 – Episode 3 Re-cap

By Denny “The Mad One” Hodge

The 32 has been trimmed to 16, and those 16 earned their way into the TUF House. The episode starts with some background on some of the fighters, then it’s on to the injury update with one LW and one LHW, and their fractured noses. Both Brian McLaughlin and Karn Grigoryan know that there is a possibility that for now, their UFC dreams may be over. Dana lets both fighters know that the NSAC has decided that they cannot compete, and that they have been placed on 180-day suspensions. As a result both must go home, and they respond with some serious silence and stalling prompting Dana to tell them, “You got to walk out that door, there.”

With that business complete, the replacement fighters are to be named and Light-Heavyweight Kyle Kingsbury is the first to be named. The replacement for the LW’s will be a “mystery” fighter, and the coaches agree that he will be the last pick following the team selections.

The Fertitta Effect

By: Kelvin Hunt

So far the UFC/Zuffa has had another banner year in 2008.  They have accomplished so many things this year that a lot of it flies under the radar.  Things such as:

  • Holding their first ever event in Canada with UFC 83
  • Inking a deal with Bud Light
  • Signing a deal with toy maker JAKKS Pacific

That’s just to name a few things without even mentioning PPV sales so far this year, and gate figures breaking records at almost every new venue they hold an event in.  The majority of all of the things mentioned thus far was accomplished prior to Lorenzo Fertitta joining the fold full time at Zuffa.  However, not to be out done…a couple of BIG things have transpired in the few months that Fertitta has been at work.  Things such as:

Dana White post-UFC 88 interview

Many people were left feeling bewildered after UFC 88.  How could The Iceman, the most popular mma athlete in the world and a knockout artist in his own right, get laid out cold by a TUF winner?  How was this possible?  People began to act and speak as if it “shouldn’t” have happened.

Immediately after UFC 88 and following the KO heard around the world in Atlanta, Dana White spoke with ESPN radio where he addressed some of these concerns and a lot more. Here is what the good friend of Chuck Liddell and UFC President, Dana White had to say :

  • In reference to the main event, White states “Chuck Liddell has never been knocked out like that, ever.”
  • He goes on to say that Rashad Evans felt Chuck “was at the end of his career” and was very excited about his match up with the Iceman.
  • White talks about a “changing of the guard” and how The Ultimate Fighter is “the real deal” for bringing in new talent.
  • Now we have TUF 1 winner vs. TUF 2 winner for the LHW title.
  • White says the LHW title fight would have been Rampage vs. Forrest in a rematch but his legal issues screwed the timing up. [Rampage instead will fight Shogun.]
  • Dana discusses his questionable eating habits that were displayed during his video blogs.

Dana White’s UFC 88 video blog (#6)

Here’s Dana’s final video blog of UFC 88.  It’s the day of the fights there in Atlanta.  It shows behind the scenes footage of everyone getting ready and setting the show up.  Something interesting in this video is Joe Rogan talking about a chunk of Karo Parisyan’s leg is missing from a hamstring injury he never got fixed.  A very funny moment is getting to see B.J. Penn’s look-alike.

Posted below is Dana White’s previous UFC 88 video blog #5 from Sept. 5

“I’m tired of hearing about fu**ing Fedor” -Brock Lesnar

The UFC held a conference call today announcing the return of Heavyweight Champion, Randy Couture. Randy will be defending his heavyweight title against Brock Lesnar on November 15, 2008 at the MGM in Las Vegas. Here are some of the highlights of the conference call:

  • Dana White said they will do everything in their power to make a fight between Randy and Fedor happen
  • The winner of Mir vs. Nogueira will face the winner of Lesnar vs. Couture for the heavyweight title
  • All legal issues between Couture and the UFC have been settled
  • When asked if he would rather stand up with Brock or wrestle with him on the ground, Randy has not studied tape on Lesnar yet so at this point he does not have a definite gameplan.
