Abel Cullum will defend Flyweight Title on Aug.1 – PRO MMA exclusive interview

Submission expert Abel “The Silent Assassin” Cullum is the 14-3 two-time King of the Cage Flyweight Champion. On Aug.1, 2009 Abel will defend his title against Richard Montano (10-6-1) at “KOTC: Gatekeeper.”

Their fight will serve as main event of the card which takes place at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino in Mescalero, N.M. Cullum will surely be looking for revenge as Montano was the first person to defeat the New Mexico native back in 2005 via unanimous decision.

PRO MMA (promma.info) spoke to Abel on Wednesday about his upcoming title defense and rematch with Montano. He also discussed his last bout at DREAM 9 and how he feels about fighting in Japan. He shared his thoughts on the WEC, gave his pick for Lesnar vs. Mir 2, and much more.

DREAM.9 takes place Tuesday May 26th at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan. The event will air live in the U.S. on HDNet beginning at 5:00 AM EST/2:00 AM PST. And because we here at PRO MMA (promma.info) are committed to bringing you the best coverage possible, we will be offering LIVE round-by-round updates throughout the event.

There are a total of ten fights scheduled for DREAM.9 including the second round (quarter-finals) of their Featherweight Grand Prix with such fighters as “Kid” Yamamoto, Joe Warren, Abel Cullum, and Hideo Tokoro taking part. There will be a DREAM Middleweight Championship fight between Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and “Bully Beatdown” star, Jason “Mayhem” Miller.

EliteXC crowns first Bantamweight Champ – ShoXC results

Elite XC held its ShoXC Elite Challenger Series tonight in Santa Ynez, CA. at the Chunash Casino.  Here is how the main card went down that aired live on Showtime.

Erik Apple vs. Matt Makowski
Rd.1 – Apple gets the takedown early in the round and ends up on top looking for a kimura.  Stays on top of Makowski for over two minutes landing ground and pound and still going  for an arm submission.   Makowski can’t escape from the bottom of Apple’s control and stays on his back for close to a full five minutes.
Rd.2 – Apple with a head kick but receives a right hand from Makowski.  Apple shoots in and Makowski gets a guillotine.  Apple escapes and Makowski is now back on the bottom where he spent all of round one.  Apple secures full mount.  Landing elbows from the top.  Makowski gives up his back and Apple sinks in the rear naked choke for the tapout.  Erik Apple defeats Matt Makowski by rear naked choke submission in round 2. Notes:  Mike “The Joker” Guymon was in Apple’s corner.  Apple is the guy who defeated Nick Serra last time by taking his legs out from under him with numerous leg kicks making it so Serra could not continue.
