PRO MMA’s Southeastern Amateur Spotlight: Lorenz Larkin

On May 2nd Lorenz Larkin stepped in the cage at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee to take on Wendall Mitchell at “Gameness Fighting Championship 3.”  Quickly, Larkin started landing leg kicks and right hands to his opponent and it wasn’t long before he landed a big right hand that put Mitchell flat out on the canvas.  This was an all too familiar sight for Larkin who has finished 8 out of his 9 opponents via (T)KO.

PRO MMA (promma.info) recently spoke with Larkin, the Ring of Rage Heavyweight Champion, to get his thoughts on several topics including the fight at “GFC 3,” his striking background, his upcoming fight on May 23rd for Hardrock MMA, and when he plans to turn professional.

Pat Miletich and Sam Caplan announce their resignations from the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA)

After serving in prominent positions with the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts since its inception 20 months ago, Pat Miletich and Sam Caplan have jointly announced their resignations from the MMA sanctioning body, effective immediately.

Miletich, the first-ever UFC welterweight champion and a world class mixed martial arts trainer, had been serving as the company’s Vice President of Fighter Relations. Additionally, he had recently made multiple appearances on ESPN.com’s weekly MMA show “MMA Live” on behalf of WAMMA.

“Throughout my entire time with WAMMA, I’ve been sincere in my belief that the sport needs undisputed champions in every major weight class,” Miletich began. “To this day, I still feel that way and still believe in WAMMA’s basic principles. However, I no longer believe that WAMMA’s execution is where it needs to be in order for it to meet its full potential. Based on that and a growing difference of opinion with WAMMA’s board of directors, I made the decision that it is time to move on.”

Joe Doerksen headlines Canadian Fighting Championship this Friday

The Canadian Fighting Championship returns with “CFC 2” this Friday May 22nd at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Headlining the card will be UFC veteran Joe “El Dirte” Doerksen (41-12) taking on Snake Team member Greg “Blade” Babene (6-4). Babene is filling in for Ron Faircloth (31-16) who had to pull out due to “undisclosed medical concerns.”

Doerksen has won his last two fights since being released from the UFC in 2008. Doerksen’s most recent victory came via third round TKO over Izuru Takeuchi at “Sengoku 6” last November. Doerksen’s opponent, Babene, trains under fellow Frenchman Cyrille Diabate, whose Snake Team is producing such prospects as Cheick Kongo and UFC 98’s “Professor X“. Diabate is also the striking coach for Team US on The Ultimate Fighter season 9.

Babene will have his hands full against Doerksen who is a submission specialist. If Babene could pull off a win against a veteran of Doerksen’s stature it would be huge for the up-and-comer. Here is the full line-up for “CFC 2:”

Is Bobby Lashley here to stay? – “MFC 21: Hard Knocks” airs live on HDNet Friday, May 15th

Maximum Fighting Championship’s “MFC 21: Hard Knocks” takes place Friday May 15, 2009 at the River Cree Resort and Casino in Alberta, Canada. MFC Light Heavyweight Champion Emanuel Newton (11-3-1) will be defending his title against contender Trevor Prangley (19-5) in the main event.

Former WWE professional wrestler Bobby Lashley (2-0) will be returning to the MMA ring as he takes on Mike Cook (6-3). Also on the card will be Elite XC and King of the Cage veteran Travis Galbraith (16-6) taking on UFC veteran David Heath (10-4). Former UFC fighter John Alessio (24-13) makes his MFC return and another UFC veteran, Marvin Eastman (15-9-1) makes his MFC debut.

When MFC promoter Mark Pavelich was recently asked by MMA Canada what will make the Bobby Lashley vs. Mike Cook fight interesting for the fans he replied, “If Mike Cook knocks him right in the face and knocks him down, that will be an interesting fight, right?  I would love to see Cook smash him right in the mouth and I want to see how he reacts to being smashed in the mouth by Mike Cook. And then if he can come back and win the fight, that will show if he is really in the sport to stay or if he’s just a fad.”
