Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has reaped the punishment for his failed drug test back in January following a unanimous decision win over Nick Diaz at UFC 183.
Silva tested positive for anabolic steroids as well as benzodiazepines. Silva’s lawyer claimed a tainted sexual performance enhancer was to blame for the failed steroid test, and as far as the benzos, he apparently took them because he was feeling anxiety before the fight.
The Nevada Athletic Commission today handed down a one-year suspension for “The Spider” dating back to the time of his last fight. They called his defense “hokey”. He was also fined his entire $200,000 win bonus in addition to 30% of his $600,000 fight purse ($180,000). Total fine for the former champ is a hefty $380,000. Also, his win over Diaz will be overturned to a No Contest.
This ruling will allow Silva to return to competition in the UFC in February 2016.
