The real UFC 189 main event.

The wait, the talk is over. Tonight we’re going to find out if Conor McGregor is ready for the top of the food chain or will he fold under the wrestling, or perhaps the heavy hands of Chad Mendes. McGregor and Mendes will headline UFC 189 tonight in Las Vegas competing for the interim featherweight championship. In the co-headliner Robbie Lawler puts his welterweight title on the line against the ever so slightly sociopathic-ish Rory MacDonald.

UFC 189 round-by-round updates:

Yosdenis Cedeno vs. Cody Pfister

Round 1 – Cedeno landing some nice kicks and punches. Pfister putting on the pressure and coming forward. Pfister’s hands look pretty good if he can find his distance but Cedeno is tearing his legs up with kicks. The Reebok shorts look good. Two more big leg kicks from Cedeno. Another. Pfister head hunting. Two HUGE leg kicks from Cedeno, then he goes high but misses. 10-9 Cedeno.

Round 2 – Pfister coming forward with punches but Cedeno continues battering his legs. Pfister scores a takedown and gets side mount. Cedeno gives up his back. Pfister gets both hooks in. Cedeno spins around and takes top control, inside full guard. Another takedown from Pfister after the ref stood them up. Cody takes his back again, switches to full mount. Cedeno gets to his feet before the bell but Pfister stays on him. 10-9 Pfister.

Round 3 – Cody with a takedown but they get stood up. Pfister with another takedown, Cedeno briefly goes for a guillotine. Pfister trying to stay busy from inside full guard. Cedeno gives up his back, Cody with both hooks in. Cedeno breaks free and after a brief scramble jumps on a guillotine. Pfister pulls free with just over a minute to go. Cody takes Cedeno’s back again with both hooks in. Cedeno spins around again for top control and gets off a couple punches to the body before the bell. 10-9 Pfister.

Neil Seery vs. Louis Smolka

Round 1 – Some overhand rights from Seery as they clinch up. Accidental head butt. Ref tells them to watch it. Seery catches a body kick and drops Smolka but ends up on bottom where he delivers elbows to the head and goes for a guillotine but Smolka pulls out. Smolka locks up his own guillotine from top and it’s very deep. Seery escapes then Smolka goes for a D’arce. He gets mount, Seery gives up his back before the bell. 10-9 Smolka.

Round 2 – High kick from Smolka. Seery gets Smolka down but he’s right back up and gets a trip takedown on Seery. Seery goes for an armbar but Smolka stands up and pulls out and ends up taking Seery’s back with half the round to go. Seery stands and tries to dive and throw Smolka off to no avail. Seery throwing blind punches to Smolka who is on his back. Smolka with a smooth transition to top control and goes for the back again at the bell. 10-9 Smolka.

Round 3 – Seery with a right and left. Smolka with a takedown. Some nice elbows from Seery off his back to the top of the head. Seery looks for an omoplata but Smolka breaks free as he stands. They slug it out, Seery stuffs a takedown and delivers a knee to the head. Seery jumps on a guillotine and it’s pretty solid but Smolka survives and gets to side control. Smolka goes for an arm triangle. He lets it go and takes full mount. Seery gives up his back, gets up but Smolka takes him back down. Back up and Seery jumps on another guillotine but once again Smolka survives and ends up locking up another arm triangle before the bell but it goes to the judges. 10-9 Smolka.

Cody Garbrandt vs. Henry Briones

Round 1 – Briones with a nice stiff left jab. Lands a few more that snap Cody’s head back. He throws up his hands. Cody with a takedown but Briones is right back up. Right from Cody, Briones counters but ends up on his back after a trip. Full mount from Cody as Briones gives up his back before the bell. 10-9 Garbrandt.

Round 2 – Low kick and body kick from Cody. Body jab from Briones. One two from Garbrandt. Left jab from Briones, body kick. Cody finally connects with a combo that drops Briones, but he’s back up. Cody being patient. Maybe too patient, he was hurt for a moment but looks to have recovered. Jab from Garbrandt. Left hook and a jumping knee from Briones. 90 seconds to go. Briones stuffs a takedown, he’s bleeding from his left eye. Nice left hook from Cody. They both score, ending with an overhand right from Cody. Overhand right from Briones. 10-9 Garbrandt.

Round 3 – Jab from Briones as he chases him down for about a minute. Briones wings and misses an overhand. Flying knee connects from Cody, then a jab. Left hook from Cody. Left hook from Briones. Right from Briones, he’s being very aggressive now but gets put on his back by Cody, takes side mount. Briones is back up but Cody scores with another flying knee. Briones with a right and Cody counters with a combo. Awesome slugfest for the last 10 seconds with Cody getting the better of it. 10-9 Garbrandt.

Cathal Pendred vs. John Howard

Round 1 – Cathal comes out missing a flying knee. Inside leg kick. Outside leg kick from Howard. Left right combo backs up Howard. Howard with a left, he catches a kick from Cathal, they clinch up against the cage. Couple knees to the thighs from Cathal. They trade leg kicks. Howard lands 2-3 right hooks inside. John catches a body kick, they clinch up, trade knees, Cathal pushes him to the cage and lands more knees. Howard breaks free to the center. They trade in the clinch. Leaping knee from Pendred to the body. Clinch, knee from Howard. Nice left hook from Howard. Leg kick. Jab and left right hooks from Howard and Pendred presses him to the cage. They break and trade leg kicks before the bell. 10-9 Howard.

Round 2 – Clinch, knee from Pendred, another knee. They square up. Some nice right hooks from Howard in the clinch. Pendred stands tough. Jab from Howard. Overhand right from Pendred. Left hook. He’s not throwing combos though. Howard stuffs a takedown and lands a couple punches. Clinch, knee from Pendred, more knees to the body. Howard turns him around to the cage. They break to the center. Inside leg kick from Pendred. Again. Couple right hooks from John inside. Big leg kick spins Pendred around. Another hard leg kick from Howard. One two from Howard. Pendred with a final leg kick and Howard hunts him down for the final 10 seconds, scoring with a couple solid punches. 10-9 Howard.

Round 3 – Leg kick from Howard. Pendred limping but lands a leg kick of his own. Howard stuffs a takedown and counters with a couple punches, knees from Pendred as he pushes Howard to the cage. They fight in the clinch for several seconds until Howard goes for a takedown and Pendred jumps on a guillotine with just over 2 minutes to go. Nope. Howard stands over Pendred now and welcomes him back up. Howard lands several punches in the clinch. Inside leg kick from Pendred. Leg kick and a left hook from Howard. Howard lands some big punches before the bell as they slug it out. 10-9 Howard.

Mike Swick vs. Alex Garcia

Round 1 – This should be interesting. Jab from Swick, big takedown from Garcia with little trouble. Swick with full guard. After stifling Garcia it’s back to the feet but Garcia scores another takedown. Swick gets to his feet and scores with punches. Catches a kick and delivers a huge leg kick in return that sounded like “Thailand” when it hit. Big right hand from Garcia stuns Swick. Garcia takes a knee from Swick. Nice right from Swick. They’re smiling at each other. 10-9 Garcia.

Round 2 – Garcia with another takedown. Swick gets up and lands a nice knee to the body. One two from Garcia. Nice punch combo from Garcia gets around’s Swick’s gloves guarding his face. Right hook from Garcia. Body kick from Swick. Garcia shoots in and dumps Swick on his back yet again. He ends the round on top in half guard. 10-9 Garcia.

Round 3 – This is Swick’s first fight since 2012. If he loses it will be 2 losses in a row, but 4 losses in his last five fights. Swick’s corner tells him he needs to stop Garcia to win. Another big takedown from Garcia, his 5th of the fight. Garcia postures up, stand and dives in with a right with about 90 seconds to go. He moves to full mount. Swick briefly gains half guard but not for long. Garcia heavy from full mount, and goes for and misses an armbar before the bell. 10-9 Garcia.

Matt Brown vs. Tim Means

Round 1 – This should be fun. Means comes out and gets in Brown’s face right away. He’s pressing Brown and tags him with punches. Means looks much larger and longer. Means takes a poke to the eye and time is called — a nice break for Brown to catch his breath. Brown connects with a big overhand right and he goes down to a knee. He’s back up and Brown presses him to the cage but Means is able to back out. Couple right hands from Brown. Clinch and knee from Brown then scores with a head kick. Means shoots, gets stuffed with a guillotine attempt, then a takedown from Brown. Means gives up his back and he’s back up. Left hook, straight right from Brown. Big right hand, but Means fires back and lands a huge left elbow to the face of Brown that cuts him and he’s instantly bleeding. Brown laughs and firs back with two elbows of his own that score, this causes Means to shoot in and get caught in a fight-ending guillotine. Boom! Great freaking fight guys!

Brad Pickett vs. Thomas Almeida

Round 1 – Leg kick from Almeida. Pickett with a body-head combo. Pickett with a left. He shoots, stuffed. Almeida dives for a heel hook but Pickett escapes and is back to his feet. Both guys end up scoring knockdowns in some great back and forth action. 10-9 Pickett.

Round 2 – Flying knee from Pickett, but Almeida backs up and delivers a flying knee to Pickett that lands perfectly on the chin and knocks Pickett out cold. Amazing!

Gunnar Nelson vs. Brandon Thatch

Round 1 – Inside and outside leg kicks from Thatch. Again. Nelson fires back with punches. Clinch fighting with both guys landing knees. Leg kick from Thatch. Brief clinch. Nelson with low hands, and out of nowhere lands a one two that knocks Thatch backward to the canvas and I think the landing woke him up. But Gunnar is all over him and takes full mount, looks for an Americana, lets it go. Thatch gives up his back. Gunnar sinks in the choke and Thatch taps out. Conor McGregor watching from the locker room. Nelson looks like he just got out of bed.

Dennis Bermudez vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round 1 – Bermudez shoots, stuffed. Stephens hurts Bermudez with a right hook as he immediately shoots in. Bermudez lets it go and tags Stephens with a punch. Stephens bleeding pretty heavily over his right eye. Bermudez working hard for a takedown and gets Stephens on his back. Bermudez goes for the back and gets one hook in while softening Stephens up with punches. Apparently it was a head butt that cut Stephens. Stephens escapes to his feet, his face a crimson mess. Leg kick from Stephens. Solid punch from Bermudez. They trade leg kicks after Stephens whiffs on a big right. Bermudez shoots, stuffed. Body kick from Bermudez before the bell. 10-9 Bermudez.

Round 2 – Leg kick from Stephens. Right hand from Bermudez but Stephens drops him with an uppercut. Bermudez gets to his feet and presses Stephens to the cage. Leg kick Stephens. Left counter hook from Stephens, and a leg kick drops Bermudez. He’s back up though and lands a right. Uppercut from Stephens then a left hook drops Bermudez. Back up and he buckles the leg of Stephens with a leg kick. Punch combo from Bermudez and he pushes Stephens to the cage. This is a great fight. Left hook, knee from Stephens. Bermudez presses Stephens to the cage. Knee from Stephens on the break. Leg kick from Bermudez. Stephens times a leg kick for a takedown attempt. Bermudez defends and they clinch up before the bell. 10-9 Stephens.

Round 3 – Leg kick from Bermudez. Another big one. Flying knee from Stephens drops Bermudez like a sack of potatoes. He follows up with punches and it’s over.

Robbie Lawler vs. Rory MacDonald

Round 1 – Robbie taking it all in as Buffer announces his name. He deserves this. This could be big if he gets a definitive win. Big for his legacy. Jab from Lawler. Jab from Rory. Straight right. Straight left from Lawler gets Rory’s attention. Jab from Rory, countered with a strong inside leg kick. Body kick from Rory. Good head movement from Robbie. Straight right from Rory. Jab from Rory. Rory shoots, stuffed, he takes a knee from Robbie. Uppercut to the body from Robbie. Jab from Rory. Nice jab from Lawler and avoids to counter punches. Front kick from Rory to the body. Nice straight left from Robbie snaps Rory’s head back. 10-9 Robbie.

Round 2 – Jab from Robbie, again. Leg kick from Rory. Jab from Rory. Again. Robbie checks a leg kick. They trade big shots, Robbie scoring first, Rory firing back and landing. Front kick to the body from the Canadian. Jab from Lawler. Head kick from Rory, partially blocked and Lawler fires right back with a punch that backs Rory up. Right to the body from Rory. One two from Robbie. Nice right form Rory, but Lawler fires right back and Rory’s face is messed up. Rory fires back with a one two. Lawler scores. Left from Robbie. Goddam this is a great fight between two warriors. Lawler scores again with a combo. They exchange once again before the bell. These guys digging deep now. 10-9 Lawler.

Round 3 – One two from Rory, glancing blows. High kick blocked by Robbie. Strong left from Robbie snaps Rory’s head back. Body kick and a right from Robbie. Jab from Robbie. Rory shoots, stuffed it. Props to King Mo. Robbie makes him pay for it and Rory’s face is completely bloody. Rory’s nose looks flattened. High kick from Rory, partially blocked. Lawler being patient. Right from Rory. Lawler staggered with a high kick. Rory goes for the kill, high kick, flying knee. He tees off. Robbie is all but done. He swings back. Uppercut from Rory. OMG saved by the bell. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. 10-8 Rory.

Round 4 – Robbie may not even should be allowed to come back out. That was bad. Oh shit. He looks fine now. Another head kick though and he’s in trouble. Rory teeing off against the cage. Lawler is hurt BADLY. Another head kick, again. Rory going psychotic now. This is why I called Rory a sociopath. No emotion and he gets meaner, nastier the longer this goes on. Robbie still here though. Head kick from Rory again. Right hook from Robbie and the sweat flies. One two from Robbie. Right hook in the clinch from Lawler. Jab from Lawler. Head kick from Rory, Lawler answers with a one two. Rory shoots, stuffed, and he pays for it. King Mo props! Front kick to the body from Rory. Straight left from Robbie. Rory with a right. Straight left from Lawler. High kick from Rory before the bell. 10-9 Rory.

Round 5 – Jab from Lawler. Straight left, another big one. Another left. Another and Rory goes down and covers his face. I think it was his nose just got destroyed. This may be the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. Robbie deserves the greatest respect. Rory too. Fucking brilliant guys. Robbie Lawler became a legend tonight.

Chad Mendes vs. Conor McGregor

Round 1 – Conor’s yelling at him at the staredown. Still yelling across the cage. Full on Diaz. Spin kick right away from McGregor and Mendes takes him down, Conor back up and eats a right. Big left hook from Chad. Leg kick Mendes. Overhand right from Mendes. Spin kick from Conor. Nice left from Conor. Right from Mendes. Left from Conor, spin kick. High kick. Head kick. Left hand. Mendes not moving well. Big one two from Mendes. Left from Conor. Front kick. Right from Chad. Conor jawing at him. Big slam takedown from Chad. Conor gets up but gets tagged hard and is bleeding from his left eye. Big right from Chad, another. Left from Conor, front kick. Knee and a left from Conor. Chad looks stunned. Left from Conor. Chad fires off a quick right. Conor lands a couple more but gets put on his back. Chad passes to side mount, then takes half guard mount with about a minute to go. Chad being warned about fingers in the eye. So he puts an elbow on him next. 10-9 Mendes.

Round 2 – McGregor called his KO for this round. Leg kick from Mendes. High kick from Conor. Mendes shoots, sprawl from Conor. Right from Chad, then Conor tees off with a combo. Chad puts him on his back yet again. Elbow from Mendes. Big right. Conor with elbows off his back. Another from Mendes. A big left. Staying busy with 2:30 to go. Big elbows from Conor to the top of the head. Chad complains to the ref but he’s not hearing it. Mendes drops a big elbow and continues with punches and elbows. Conor complaining and wanting a stand up. Ref not hearing it. Mendes passes to side mount, goes for the guillotine and it’s back up. Conor tees off with a big uppercut and punches. Mendes fires back, shoots, stuffed. Conor tees off and Chad goes down, Conor finishes him and the ref steps in. Holy Shit. Holy Shit. They hug it out after the fight as Conor is overcome with emotion. He fucking called it that little leprechaun. Conor’s Mom and Dad are in the ring, along with his team and girlfriend, during the post-fight interview.
