ufc 171-hendricks vs lawlerRobbie Lawler was expected to get his rematch and shot at Johny Hendricks‘ welterweight title in early 2015, but an injury to Chris Weidman has left December’s UFC 181 card without a main event. Now Lawler and Hendricks will headline the Dec. 6th card.

Via UFC:

The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced today that middleweight champion Chris Weidman has suffered a hand injury in training and has been forced out of his fight with Vitor Belfort on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas. The fight will be rescheduled to a later date.

As a result, UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks will take on No. 1 contender Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC 181 on Dec. 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The fight will serve as a rematch to their hotly-contested title fight in March, a bout narrowly won by Hendricks.

UFC 181 will be co-headlined by the lightweight title bout between champion Anthony Pettis and top contender Gilbert Melendez.

Hendricks, Lawler, Pettis and Melendez will take part in a press conference this Friday at 2 p.m. at the MGM Grand’s Premier Ballroom. The press conference is free and open to the public.

It’s definitely unfortunate we’re not going to get to see how Vitor looks against top competition now that he’s off the TRT, but his time will come. And if the bout has to get replaced, Hendricks vs. Lawler 2 is a great one to do it with.
