“UFC 171: Hendricks vs. Lawler” takes place this evening at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler will battle it out for the vacant welterweight title in the main event, while top tier welterweights Carlos Condit and Tyron Woodley go toe-to-toe in the co-headliner.

Nice right cross from Garcia. Body kick from Spencer. Good boxing footwork and head movement from Spencer. Head kick from Garcia, then an uppercut follows. Spencer returns same. Garcia with a takedown, gets on Spencer’s back, now full mount. Spencer is out and to his feet quickly, lands a knee on Garcia as he gets up. Leg kick Spencer. Spencer’s leg/foot may be hurt from hitting a kick on Garcia’s knee. Kind of limping on it. Left counter from Garcia. Jab from Spencer. Spencer misses a spinning elbow and kick before the bell. Thoughts: Takedowns made the difference in the judges’ eyes I’m sure, even though he was unable to do anything with them and Spencer got up quickly every time.
145 lbs: Dennis Bermudez vs. Jimy Hettes
Round 1 – Right hand from Bermudez, leg kick. Again. Hettes ties him up but Bermudez turns him to the cage. Hettes turns him back around, and Bermudez turns him around… like a dos-e-doe dance. Back to the feet. They swing and miss, Bermudez gets a takedown but Hettes immediately back up. Bermudez presses him to the cage, gets a trip takedown. Hettes back up. Uppercut from Bermudez. Hettes with an uppercut. Hettes lands some more before getting taken down. Back up. Bermudez lands a couple punches, picks Hettes up for a slam, but he’s right up, but not for long. Back up again, clinched, dirty boxing. Clinched, dos-e-doe’ing again. Knee and an elbow from Bermudez. Dirty boxing, left hook. Right from Hettes, Thai plum, but gets taken down by Bermudez. Bermudez inside full guard. One minute left. Bermudez postures up with punches, staying busy enough, body shots. Hettes is able to get up, scramble, Bermudez looks for a guillotine, time up. Round 2 – Clinched against the cage, knee from Bermudez, right hook counter from Hettes. Bermudez presses him back to the cage. They trade knees inside. Bermudez dumps him on the ground but he posts on a hand and gets right back up. Clinched, Hettes turns him to the cage. Bermudez shoots, lets go, leg kick, trade knees. Hettes turns him to the cage, Bermudez turns him around now. Clinch fighting goes on for a bit. Hettes tries to trip him but ends up in a disadvantageous position, back up and Bermudez tees off knocking his mouthpiece out. Bermudez puts him down but Hettes makes his way back up. Not for long. Ref gets his mouthpiece back in then Bermudez takes him down. Hettes is able to get up and hang on Bermudez’s back. Bermudez ends up on bottom after attempting a throw. Round 3 – Clinched again against the cage. Bermudez backs out with a right. They both miss a few strikes before Bermudez drops Hettes with a right hand. He postures over him between guard, trying to pick his shots and staying patient. Hettes tries to roll out, looks for an arm but Bermudez is wearing him out with steady ground and pound. Bermudez lets him up. Big inside leg kick from Bermudez. Hettes shoots, stuffed. Bermudez lands a right to the body and Hettes falls over. This happens again after Bermudez lands a punch and knee to the face and the ref has seen enough. Me too.

Round 1 – Right from Rocky. Clinch, she lands a knee to the body, another one. Body shots from Andrade, who pushes Rocky to the cage. Rocky has her neck with one arm, body shots from Andrade. Rocky trying to pummel under for a guillotine. Andrade gets out of there, Rocky turns her around to the cage but is turned back around, Andrade with more body shots. Still clinched. Andrade with a very nice throw, ends up on top in half guard. Andrade trying to posture up. Rocky holding her tight. Andrade picks her up for a slam but Rocky is back up, clinched. Andrade drops to a knee for another throw and is back on top in half guard, landing body shots. Rocky preventing her from passing guard. Andrade postures up. Rocky goes for an armbar. Story shakes him off, now on top. Kelvin tries to get up but Story on his back with hooks in. Story looking for the choke with 90 seconds to go. One minute to go. Kelvin spins and takes top control but Story gets to his feet and lands a right. Nice left from Kelvin. Nice jab. Body kick Story. Kelvin shoots, stuffed, but lands a left. 10 seconds left and they swing it out, both landing. I’m going to lean with Story. It was close but he had Kelvin down for a good length of time and had his back. 10-9 Story as I see it and 29-28 for the fight.

Round 1 – Body kick, quick takedown from OSP. Moves to side control. Krylov holding his neck. OSP looking for the crucifix. OSP has him in a Von Flue choke as Krylov is holding his neck, and all the sudden OSP stands up and Krylov is unconscious. Amazing!! Love it.

Leg kick Shields, big left hand from Lombard, clinch, knee from Lombard to the body. Leg kick Shields. Lombard counters with a punch. Shields shoots, stuffed. Clinch against the cage, body shot from Lombard. Big hooks to the face from Lombard, cuts Shields. Shields escapes, they square up. Shields shoots, stuffed. Lombard throws him down, lands some punches. Shields bleeding pretty good now, wipes it from his eye. Toe to toe now. Shields showing a jab, head kick attempt. Lombard looking for the bombs. Shields shoots, stuffed. Lombard lands some big punches. Shields shoots, pulls guard. Shields has him in full guard now. Shields tying him up from the bottom but he better be very careful and I’m starting to feel ridiculous for picking Shields. Boos from the crowd at the stalemate. Round 2 – In the corner Gilbert Melendez tells Shields to throw more kicks hard and take more shots to try and tire Lombard out. Said he’s already looking tired. Leg kick Shields, checked. High kick. Body shot Lombard. Swings for the fences for Shields’ head, misses. He tags Shields with more punches, clinch, trips Shields easily to his back. Lombard in side mount. Lombard’s corner wants him to get up. Shields with full guard. Body shots from Lombard. Ref stands up the stalemate. Lombard standing flat footed and still in the middle, just waiting. Lombard swings, Shields shoots, stuffed. He tries to pull guard. Lombard lets him up. 90 seconds left. Jake showing a jab. Boos from the crowd. Clinch, Lombard throws him yet again. Lombard in side mount. Shields gets full guard. Time runs out. PMN scores it 10-9 Lombard.
Round 3 – Lombard catches a kick and tries to counter with a big punch that Shields avoids. Body counter-shot from Lombard. Shields complains of a low blow and time is called. Shields only takes a couple seconds though. Shoots for a single, stuffed. Lombard trips him easily, now inside Shields’ full guard. Lombard works the body for a bit before the ref stands them up again. Shields shoots from the outside, stuffed again. He pulls guard, yet again. His face is a bloody mess now. Shields trying to tie him up as Lombard maintains top control but not doing much at all. Crowd booing. Ref stands them up. Lombard’s corner yelling for him to keep fighting. Lombard shoots and Shields goes for a guillotine with 10 seconds left. He survives to the bell. Not very entertaining except for Lombard landing some nice punches in the first round. Round 2 – Jury’s corner called it a “perfect round” for him. Diego takes the center. Jury with a leg kick. Switching stances. Nice body kick from Diego, he comes in swinging. Jury gets out of the way. Big right counter from Jury stuns Sanchez. He’s cut now and bleeding on from his cheek. Sanchez wobbles Jury with a big right. Jury right back in there though and seems fine. Diego didn’t follow up. Diego with a nice right. He blocks a high kick from Jury. Jab from Jury. Again. Diego’s face busted up. Nice body kick from Sanchez. Jury lands a nice counter right, then a perfectly timed takedown. Sanchez has an arm-in guillotine, squeezing… Jury gives a thumbs up. Jury is free, lands a nice elbow. Sanchez rolls to his feet. Jury lands a nice right as he gets up. PMN has it 10-9 Jury.
Round 3 – Jury takes the center this time, looking very confident. Lans a jab on the nose. Leg kick. Diego backs him up and lands a punch combo. Nice body kick from Sanchez. Head kick from Jury blocked. UFC cameramen cutting the heads off on the PPV. WTF? Nice left to the body from Sanchez. Body kick. Slapping leg kick. Again. Jury presses him to the cage. Now back to the center. Diego pressing the action, Jury times a takedown. Sanchez with a couple of upkicks to the body. Jury inside his guard with 30 seconds left. Jury postures up as Sanchez looks for an arm, then gets to his feet before the bell. Sanchez jumps guard for a guillotine at the bell. Diego shakes his hand. He has a huge gash under his left eye. 10-9 and 30-27 for Jury, I’m sure.

170 lbs: Carlos Condit (170.5) vs. Tyron Woodley
Round 1 – Condit looking very focused. Has a bit of height advantage. Touch gloves. Woodley lands a huge right that backs Condit up, another one! Woodley lands a body shot and a head shot as Condit comes in. Spinning back kick from Condit. Woodley ties him up against the cage. His explosiveness is crazy. Condit with a few body shots as Woodley muscles him against the cage. Condit turns him around. Woodley turns him around, has underhooks. Lands a couple knees. Dirty boxing. Woodley backs out. They square up. Condit tags him with a left. Now a leg kick. Woodley times a perfect takedown. Rubber guard from Condit. Locks up a triangle, Woodley picks him up and throws him off. They trade punches, Condit got the better of it. Head kick attempt from Condit. Woodley times another perfect takedown. Woodley postures up. Ref lets Condit up. Spinning elbow from Woodley lands awkwardly, they trade punches at the bell. PMN sees it 10-9 Woodley.

Woodley seems to know something is wrong with Condit’s right knee — he kicks the left leg and this fight is over as Condit falls, grabbing his right knee in pain, unable to hold his weight. Presses Lawler to cage. Hendricks backs out with a left. Right hook from Lawler. Hendricks shoots, stuffed, presses Lawler to the cage. Knee from Hendricks to the face, left hand, backs out. Lawler landing some nice punches. Looks more like a sparring match to be honest. — Okay, scratch that for now. Nice left from Lawler hurts Hendricks. Hendricks is wobbly but still in the pocket, not shooting in. Lawler teeing off, lands an elbow, uppercut and a right hand. Hendricks shoots in, stuffed. 2 minutes to go in this round. Hendricks scores with a combo and a leg kick. Lawler with a jab, backing Hendricks up. Hendricks scores with punches and Lawler smiles. Jab jab hook from Hendricks who looks recovered. Right left right from Hendricks. Very weird fight. PMN sees it 10-9 Hendricks.

Hendricks bleeding badly now. Left from Lawler. I’ve never seen Hendricks fight like this. It’s the most unintelligent fight I’ve ever seen him in. He’s just standing there. Round 5 – Jab from Lawler. Big left from Lawler as Hendricks tries to rush in. More jabs from Lawler. Hendricks shoots, presses Lawler to the cage, looking for the takedown. Lawler defends.
