Bellator 17 Play-by-play:

Toby Imada vs. Carey Vanier (lightweight semi-finals)

Round 1 – They exchange punches to the face. Straight left by Vanier then a quick leg kick. Vanier shoots, gets stuffed. They clinch, knee to the body by Vanier. Takedown by Vanier, moves to side control, Imada is up. Imada blocks a straight head kick. Vanier with a head kick partially blocked. Left by Vanier. Imada not able to set up any strikes so far. Imada throws a big overhand right but misses and gets taken down. Imada grabs a knee bar but Vanier escapes, gets the takedown and goes straight to full mount. Imada gets half guard, they scramble and it goes back to the feet. Both guys exchange blows, Vanier with a suplex, goes for a kimura, but Imada is free and up. They clinch, knee to the body by Imada, again. Vanier lands his own knee. Left jab by Vanier and Imada lands a nice punch that causes Vanier to drop straight to the mat a la takedown attempt. ProMMAnow.com scores round 1 10-9 for Vanier.

Round 2 – Really good fight so far. They exchange head kicks that miss. Imada lands a knee to the head of Vanier. Leg kick Imada. Vanier lands a couple of jabs. Imada fires off a couple of punches that miss. Leg kick by Vanier scores. Big leg kick by Imada. Another leg kick by Imada. Imada lands a punch. They scramble. Imada goes for a knee bar but Vanier escapes, they scramble and Vanier ends up on the bottom and Imada goes for an armbar. Vanier rolls, tries to escape, and taps out. Really good fight. Really good. Imada comes back in the second round, makes an adjustment, and pulls off the win. Beautiful performance. Imada for the second season in a row makes it to the Bellator lightweight tournament finals.

Pat Curran vs. Roger Huerta (lightweight semi-finals)

Round 1 – No doubt this is the biggest fight of Curran’s career. They exchange leg kicks, and Curran lands a nice head kick.Leg kick Huerta. Curran throws a body kick and Huerta partially catches it. Leg kick inside for Huerta. Front kick by Curran. Body kick by Curran. Leg kick by Huerta. Front kick by Curran scores against Huerta’s body. Leg kick for Huerta. Curran misses with a head kick and Huerta chaes him down with a kick. Huerta slips to the mat briefly. Back up and they clinch. Huerta pushes Curran against the cage. Knees to the body by Curran. Huerta with a nice knee to the bod, and again. Right hook out of the clinch by Curran. Push kick to the face by Curran. Huerta fires back with a kick. Curran throws a final kick before the bell. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Curran.

Round 2 – Inside leg kick by Huerta. They clinch up and exchange knees. Inside leg kick by Huerta. Two more big leg kicks by Huerta. Leg kick by Huerta. Another leg kick by Huerta. Nice right by Curran. Huerta stalking. Right hand by Curran, then he shoots, gets a single leg. Huerta lands a couple punches and Curran continues to retreat. They clinch, Huerta pushes him against the cage. Huerta goes for a single leg then lets it go. Huerta lands knees to the thighs. Curran grabs a guillotine but Huerta shucks him off. Superman punch that misses but a right hand right after it that hits Huerta on the jaw as the bell sounds. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Huerta.

Round 3 – Curran has a very slight scratch under his left eye. Huerta coming out active. Push kick to the stomach of Huerta. Big leg kick by Huerta. Curran initiates the clinch, Huerta pushes him against the cage. Huerta pounds the thighs of Curran with fists and knees. They separate. Big leg kick by Huerta. They exchange leg kicks. Body shot by Curran. Head kick by Curran, Huerta catches his front kick. Triple jab by Huerta. Right hand by Curran. Huerta throws Curran back and attacks hard, pouring on the heat now. Both guys exchanging punches like a Huerta fight usually looks in round three. Huerta gets the takedown. Curran gets the advantage then they stand. Very close round. One minute left. Curran gets the takedown, but Huerta gets right up. Left punch by Curran. Huerta with a leg kick. It goes to the judges. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 (barely) and the fight to Huerta 29-28. But it is damn close and could go either way.

Notes: Huerta looked VERY disappointed, as did his whole corner. Can’t help but feel sorry for Huerta. This is an enormous win for Curran. Announcers call it the biggest upset in Bellator history and maybe one of the biggest in MMA history.

Eddie Alvarez vs. Josh Neer (160 lbs. Super Fight)

Notes: Eddie Alvarez is the current Bellator Lightweight Champion. This is a non-title “Super Fight” as he waits for Season 2 to produce a challenger to the title.

Round 1 – Neer looks quite a bit taller and bigger. They clinch, body shots by Alvarez. Alvarez punches as Neer grabs a clinch. Alvarez grabs a single and gets the takedown. Neer has an open guard. Alvarez lands a couple of big right hands. Up kick by Neer. Ref warns Eddie not to grab the fence again or he will lose a point. Eddie takes side control, but Neer regains full guard. Alvarez laying on the ground and pound. Not doing a ton of damage, but landing some punches. Alvarez gets full mount. Neer gives up his back, Neer throws hiim off and gets top position. Alvarez gets to his feet. They square off. Neer swings, Alvarez ducks under, picks Neer up and slams him. Alvarez has side control, moves to mount. Lands some ground and pound as the bell sounds. ProMMAnow.com clearly scores round 1 10-9 for Alvarez.

Round 2 – Neer breathing and sweating heavy. Alvarez is not. Leg kick by Neer, and again. Alvarez gets the single leg again. Neer looks for a kimura, no dice. Neer swings as Alvarez moves in. Right hand by Neer, then a left. Alvarez gets a single leg takedown. Neer has a cut over one eye. Alvarez takes Neer’s back, locks in the rear=naked choke. Neer refuses to tap and Alvarez puts him to sleep, he falls flat on his face from the standing position. Beautiful performance by Eddie Alvarez. His technical superiority was overwhelming.

Cole Konrad vs. Pat Bennett (Special Feature – Heavyweight)

Notes: There’s big hype around Cole Konrad as being a training partner of Brock Lesnar. Konrad wrestled for the University of Minnesota and is a two-time Division 1 NCAA champ. Konrad is 2-0 in MMA.

Round 1 – Bennett lands a jab, then a left hook. Konrad gets a body lock then trips him with a takedown and is in half guard. Konrad is HUGE. Konrad controlling from half guard and landing shots to the body. Bennett has full guard, and punches from the bottom as Konrad postures up. Konrad in half guard now working to advance. Konrad with elbows and punches to the face. Nice short elbows by Konrad, then he takes full mount. Bennett gives up his back, then rolls back over with Konrad in full mount. Ref stops it and puts Bennett’s mouth guard back in. Konrad punching from the pound laying on the pain as the bell sounds. Bennett is not getting up, this may be over. 10-9 for Konrad.

Round 2 – Bennett’s face looks mauled up on his face. Konrad not breathing hard, looks in good shape for such a big guy. Konrad lands a left before initiating the clinch. Bennett lands a knee and escapes the clinch. Nice left jab by Konrad. The pace has slowed. Bennett is doing nothing. Konrad lands a punch, gets the clinch. Knee to the gut by Bennett. Konrad attempts a takedown but Bennett survives the attempt and breaks free. Nice right hand by Konrad. Knee to the body by Konrad. Konrad puts his hands on his knees for a moment, that means the big man is tired. Big right hand by Konrad, then a big left hook right on the jaw. Konrad punches, tries to clinch but Bennett gets free. Bennett not doing anything. Konrad lands a punch. Crowd boos the inactivity as the round ends. 10-9 for Konrad.

Round 3 – Spinning side kick to the belly by Bennett. Nice. Konrad moves forward swinging, they clinch. Konrad hesitates as they separate and Bennett lands a few big punches. Bennett’s face is busted up. Konrad  lands a right, then a left, tries to clinch. Konrad lands another punch.Push kick by Konrad. Lazy leg kick by Bennett. One minute left. Leg kick by Bennett. Big right by Konrad. Nice right by Bennett. Nice right by Konrad. Bennett swings off a few as the bell sounds. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Konrad.
