WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown (20-4) will make his first title defense against number one contender Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia (12-3) this Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the Bank Atlantic Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Brown defeated WEC ‘poster boy’ Urijah Faber (22-2) at WEC 36 in November, 2008 to win the title. It was Faber’s first loss in thirteen fights. Prior to that, Brown defeated Jeff Curran (29-10-1) and is on an eight fight win-streak.

This will be the WEC’s first foray into Texas and Leonard Garcia, who hails from Plainview, Texas, will most certainly have a large number of fans supporting him at the event. Garcia is a UFC transplant and has had two straight wins in the WEC, his most recent being a first round TKO over Jens Pulver at WEC 36 back in November 2008. Fans are not going to want to blink when Brown and Garcia match up this Sunday.

Another highly anticipated bout on the WEC 39 card is former WEC Lightweight Champion “Razor” Rob McCullough (16-5) versus Marcus “The Wrecking Ball” Hicks (8-1). Although he lost, McCullough is coming of a ‘Fight of the Year-caliber’ performance against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (9-1) at WEC 36. McCullough would like to get back on track toward regaining the lightweight title.

Marcus Hicks is also looking to get back in the win column after losing at WEC 35 to the same man that took Rob McCullough’s WEC Lightweight Title, Jamie Varner (16-2).  Hicks is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and also has a background in professional boxing. He is from Dallas, Texas and will certainly have the home crowd advantage in this fight.

PRO MMA (promma.info) will be providing live round by round results of WEC 39 this Sunday night, March 1, starting at 8:00pm CST/6:00pm PST. The event will be televised live nationally on VERSUS.
