Strikeforce conference call with Gina Carano & Cris “Cyborg” Santos

PRO MMA (promma.info) participated in a Strikeforce conference call on Thursday with Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos who are scheduled to face each other in the main event at “Strikeforce: Carano vs. Santos” at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. on Aug. 15, 2009. Also on the call were Showtime’s Senior VP of Sports and Event Programming Ken Hershman, and Strikeforce Founder and CEO Scott Coker.

Carano and Santos fielded questions from the MMA media on such topics as making weight, the importance of 5-minute rounds, if the ladies had ever been approaced by the UFC, the pressure of headlining a major event fight card filled with men, their thoughts on “beauty vs. beast,” and much more.

Women get 5-minute rounds in Strikeforce

After receiving approval from the Washington and California State Athletic Commissions, the next two scheduled female MMA bouts on Strikeforce cards, taking place respectively on June 19 and Aug. 15,  will be contested in five-minute rounds according to a press release PRO MMA (promma.info) received from the promotion on Tuesday.

Until now, three-minute rounds were the norm for most female fights in the United States. Strikeforce Rules Director Cory Schafer explained where the three-minute rounds for women came from, “…limiting each round to three minutes in duration was designed (by state athletic commissions) as a safety measure for the protection of less experienced fighters, with no designation for gender. It was never intended as a gender bias against female professionals…”

Santos vs. Akano raises more issues than menstruation, three-minute rounds, & weigh ins

Cagewriter’s Maggie Hendricks went on an emphatic rant about Cristiane Santos, blaming her weight-cutting trouble on that time of the month.

Jordan Breen, on Sherdog’s Beatdown after the Bell, reiterated his stance the lack of fan outrage at female fighters for not making weight devalues female competition.

During Showtime’s April 11th Strikeforce telecast, Mauro Ranallo addressed the fact women ridiculously only fight three-minute rounds.

Normally, these fine journalists would have exhausted all the high profile women’s MMA post-fight editorial topics, but not this time.

Is the WEC preparing to add female weight classes?

It appears that WEC Welterweight Champion, Carlos Condit, could be getting a transfer to the UFC. Parent company, Zuffa, owns both promotions.

The decision to move Condit to the UFC comes on the heels of his scheduled opponent for WEC 39 set for March 1, Brock Larson, having to pull out of the fight due to injury. Condit’s first UFC appearance could be a SPIKE TV televised main event versus Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 18 in Nashville, TN.

The same report indicates that the WEC will most likely go ahead and disband their entire welterweight division which would make sense if they are moving the champion to a different organization. Since Zuffa owns both promotions, UFC and WEC, it appears they are wanting to cut out all coinciding weight classes. The WEC already shut down their light heavyweight and middleweight classes and transferred most of their top fighters from those divisions to the UFC, so it appears the move with Condit fits right into the master plan.

CBS Saturday Night Fights Conference Call

EliteXC had a media conference call today featuring Gina Carano, Kelly Kobald, Jake Shields, and Paul Daley, all who will be fighting Oct. 4 on CBS Saturday Night Fights.  The four fighters fielded questions from various reporters. Here’s a synopsis:

Gina  Carano & Kelly Kobald
Carano, when asked if she felt any frustration for not being able to fight Chris Cyborg, responded, that there’s no frustration for not fighting Cyborg this time. Although she does want to fight her, she wants to get through this fight first and then see what happens with Cyborg. Gina insisted, “I’m gonna be here for a second.”

Jared Shaw thinks the media is making too big of a deal out of Gina Carano “refuting her position” as the face of women’s mma.

One subject Gina Carano did not care to spend much time discussing was her weight. When asked what she weighs now and how much she will weigh at weigh-ins next Friday, she responded, “I will weigh 140 lbs. next Friday and what I weigh now I will keep to myself.”
