A Pro’s Take: Bastianelli on GSP vs. Penn and Varner vs. Cerrone

PRO MMA (http://promma.info) had the chance to catch up with ‘Relentless’ Ryan Bastianelli after his Wednesday evening practice in Concord, CA at Combat Fitness.

‘Relentless’ had been training for his bout at Fight Quest: Battle Grounds; however, he took a quick break from training last weekend to take in WEC 38 in San Diego, CA.

Bastianelli shared his thoughts on Jamie Varner’s performance against ‘The Cowboy’ and where he thought Varner stood on the score cards prior to the bout being stopped. Bastianelli also touched on the St. Pierre vs. Penn Welterweight title fight. The former ASU wrestler broke down the title fight and made a prediction.

My side of the story; Jamie Varner

The WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie Varner (16-2 MMA, 4-0 WEC) stopped by Pro MMA Radio on Monday evening to talk to Larry Pepe about his controversial victory last night over Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone (9-1 MMA, 3-1 WEC) and the fan outcry that has followed.

In his first interview following the fight Varner was clearly heated but felt it important to share his side of the story, to explain why he apologized, and to clarify exactly what went down.

Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone fought four hard rounds Sunday night for the WEC Lightweight Title. The fifth round began just as exciting as the previous four and then it happened, Cerrone threw a knee to a downed Jamie Varner. The referee stepped in, stopped the fight, and brought in the doctor. Varner could not see therefore, could not continue and ends up winning a split decision in one of the most controversial endings in recent memory.

Preview of WEC 38: Varner vs. Cerrone

With all of the hype surrounding the Affliction: Day of Reckoning card taking place this weekend, it’s easy for some to forget that WEC 38 will be taking center stage Sunday night.  Airing live on Versus Sunday, January 25th, the card will feature a title fight as WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner (15-2-2) steps back into the cage to defend his title for the second time, facing fast rising star Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (9-0-1).

The undefeated Cerrone’s ascent has been rapid following his appearance on the TapOut reality show.  As an already accomplished and undefeated kick boxer, Cerrone has quickly added a well rounded submission game to his standup arsenal and is just as dangerous on the ground grappling as he is standing.

Varner has been impressive in his WEC showings, taking the lightweight belt from Rob McCullough in dramatic fashion, and quickly dispatching a tough and game Marcus Hicks in his first title defense bout.

Pulver vs Faber 2 Slated for WEC 38

by: Matt De La Rosa

Instead of getting an immediate rematch with Mike Thomas Brown, Urijah Faber reportedly will face off against Jens Pulver one more time.

The two featherweights squared off back in June at WEC 34 with “The California Kid” defeating Pulver via unanimous decision after five hard fought rounds.

The number one featherweight contender spot gets awarded to Leonard Garcia (12-3) who will receive the first crack at Mike Thomas Brown’s 145 pound title. Garcia stopped Pulver at 1:12 in the first at WEC 36, the same event where Brown took Faber’s title.
