Xtreme Fighting Championships (XFC) brings first-ever pro mixed martial arts fight card in Tennessee history to Knoxville on Feb. 20

Knoxville, TN – For the first time in Tennessee sports history, the state’s Athletic Commission has approved a professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight card. XFC, the Southeast’s largest independent MMA promotion and the company dedicated to launching the careers of the champions of tomorrow, is pleased to announce that XFC 7: “School of Hard Knox” will be held on Friday, February 20 in Knoxville, Tennessee’s 21 thousand-capacity Thompson-Boling Arena. This will be the first-ever professional MMA event sanctioned anywhere in Tennessee.

Against the odds: the history of Frank Mir’s UFC career

Frank Mir started his UFC career in 2001 at UFC 34 against a very high level BJJ black belt practitioner in Roberto Traven (Mundial winner and an ADCC champion). Frank Mir was a purple belt at the time and submitted Travern in just over one minute into round one.  It was a very impressive debut and everyone took notice.

In his next bout at UFC 36 Frank was pitted against UFC veteran Pete Williams. Williams had faced the likes of Kevin Randleman, Semmy Schilt and former UFC HW Champion, Ricco Rodriguez.  He had never been submitted in his career, yet Frank Mir in his second UFC bout submitted Williams in just 46 seconds with a very impressive shoulder lock.
