Two legends collide at UFC 109 as Couture takes on Coleman

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – In 1998, two of the United States’ greatest amateur wrestlers – Randy “The Natural” Couture and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman – were scheduled to meet in a relatively new proving ground called the Ultimate Fighting Championship. That mixed martial arts bout at UFC 17 never happened due to injury, but on Saturday, February 6th, nearly 12 years and six UFC championships later, Couture and Coleman finally square off at UFC 109: Relentless, presented by Bud Light and live on pay-per-view from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev., for a colossal meeting of Hall of Famers over a decade in the making.

MMA Flashback: 2002 – Frank Trigg vs Jason Medina

In 2001 a new Las Vegas-based MMA promotion by the name of the WFA (World Fighting Alliance) was formed under the leadership of MMA trainer/fighter, John Lewis and nightclub promoter, John Huntington. The Nevada State Athletic Commission had opened the doors for MMA and it was on. PRIDE and SHOOTO veteran, Frank Trigg had trained under Lewis, so naturally he would be one of their first stars. At this point in his career Trigg was 7-1 and was coming off his first loss, which was to Hayato Sakurai a year earlier in Dec. 2000.

The WFA held their first event in Nov. of 2001 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Vegas and Trigg, fighting at welterweight was looking to get back on track and ended up ground and pounding the very experienced Laverne Clark into a third round submission. Eight months later the WFA was back at the Hard Rock with their second show and this time Trigg was facing 10-2 Jason Medina. Here is that fight. Keep in mind this is the weight (170lbs.) XCF: RUMBLE IN RACE TOWN results & NASCAR drivers give opinion on MMA

XTREME CAGEFIGHTING FEDERATION’S – XCF: RUMBLE IN RACE TOWN went down last night in Daytona, FL. The highly anticipated event was considered part of the pre-race festivities for the DAYTONA 500 that takes place today. In fact, many NASCAR drivers and owners were expected to be at the fights and some of the fighters for sure will be attending the race today.

In the main event, Frank “Twinkle” Toes Trigg (19-6) defeated local fighter, Danny Babcock (5-2) by unanimous decision. After the fight, Trigg announced he will most likely be moving back to middleweight which he feels is his optimum weight class. Reports have stated he seemed a bit gassed after round one. Also on the card, TUF playboy, Blake Bowman (2-2), gave up a first round TKO loss to Ryan Keenan (3-0).
