No Fedor fight – “Affliction: Trilogy” cancelled

PRO MMA (promma.info) has been notified that in the wake of Affliction’s number one heavyweight contender, Josh Barnett, testing positive for a banned substance, Affliction Entertainment has cancelled their August 1st “Trilogy” PPV card.

Although numerous fighters stepped up, including Vitor Belfort, Brett Rogers, and Jeff Monson, vying to replace Barnett on short notice, Affliction’s upper management did not feel as if they had enough time to find and properly promote any replacement for such a huge fight on such short notice.

Affliction finished with Arlovski

Andrei Arlovski was one of the few fighters in history to leave the UFC on an upswing. Arlovski left the world’s premiere MMA organization in 2008 on a three-fight win streak, having defeated Marcio Cruz, Fabricio Werdum, and Jake O’Brien in consecutive heavyweight bouts.

In July 2008, he made his debut with Affliction and leveled Ben Rothwell in the third round with devastating punches remeniscent of the Arlovski who held the UFC Heavyweight Title in years past. The Belarusian appeared reinvigorated and his popularity was booming.

Just three months later, in Oct. 2008, Affliction loaned Arlovski to Elite XC. Once again “The Pit Bull” emerged victorious, becoming the first man to ever stop “Big Country” Roy Nelson, and set himself up to face the world’s consensus number one heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko.

In the last couple of days rumors have surfaced on the Internet that Affliction Entertainment is considering staging their third, and in some reports, their last event on July 11th, which is the same night as UFC 100.

Affliction COO Michael D. Cohen, in an interview with Versus.com, denies that Affliction is looking to put on a third and final show up against the UFC before calling it quits, and sets the record straight, sort of.

Cohen explained, “Right now, nothing is signed. We are exploring several different dates including that July 11th date. There’s so much that has to go into deciding what date that third event is going to take place on.”

Affliction vs. UFC: The Q-Tip Wars

“The UFC is the Q-Tip of MMA,” stated Tom Atencio on Wednesday’s Affliction: Day of Reckoning conference call. What he meant by that is when you think of cotton swabs to clean your ears, you think of the brand “Q-Tip.” When people (casual fans) think of MMA, they think of the UFC. Make no mistake, Affliction is out to topple the UFC as the number one MMA organization in the world.

From the tone of the Affliction Entertainment executives it has become very clear they are not going to be satisfied playing second fiddle. Michael Cohen, Executive Vice President and Special Counsel to Donald J. Trump said, “Affliction Entertainment will become the premiere company in mixed martial arts…Affliction will become the Q-Tip of MMA.”

There certainly are enough people and companies collaborating together to make some waves. Affliction Entertainment, M-1 Global, Donald Trump, and Golden Boy are all working together to put on the best MMA events possible. With Fedor leading the charge as the WAMMA Heavyweight Champion, Affliction is poised to do big things in 2009.
