On Tuesday, AskMen, known as the leading men’s lifestyle website with a reported 17 million monthly readers, released their sixth annual Top 49 Most Influential Men of 2011 list.
Making the list for what is now the third year in a row is none other than Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) President Dana White. With more than 200,000 ballots cast, the leader of the world’s number one professional mixed martial arts organization came in a No. 38.
White was the only man from the MMA industry on this year’s list, unless you count HDNet owner Mark Cuban, who came in at No. 32. Last year, White came in at the No. 32 spot, and in 2009 he was ranked at No. 10.
The only other MMA personality to ever make AskMen’s Top 40 Most Influential Men‘s list was UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who came in at the No. 36 spot in 2009, although AskMen reports former WWE superstar and ex-UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was a strong contender in 2010.
The obvious question is, what does White’s dropping from No. 10 in 2009 to No. 32 last year, and now No. 38, mean? Is it a sign that the sport’s popularity may be declining, or is it just White’s popularity is declining? Or is it just that fewer UFC fans are reading and visiting AskMen?
Readers can currently vote whether or not they think each men’s ranking should be higher, lower or is appropriate. As it stands now, 29% think White should be ranked higher, 58% think he should be ranked lower and 13% are in agreement with White’s No. 38 ranking.
Heading up the list is Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, and coming in last at No. 49 was former American Idol judge and X-Factor creator Simon Cowell. George Clooney, who came in at No. 16 this year, is the only man who has made the list all six years.
