johny hendricks_beardWith UFC top welterweight contender Johny Hendricks set to face off against Robbie Lawler this weekend for the 170 pound strap, there’s a very good chance the Oklahoma wrestler-turned-MMA fighter could become the next UFC champion. He’s coming off a remarkable performance against former title-holder Georges St-Pierre — a performance that sent the champ into at least a semi-retirement.

UFC President Dana White was asked at Thursday’s UFC 171 pre-fight media scrum what he liked about Hendricks and why he’d make a great champion. White had plenty of nice things to say about “Bigg Rigg” but there was one thing he doesn’t care for… and I bet you can guess what that is… think Roy Nelson

White’s words:

“I like everything about Johny Hendricks. He’s a great guy, he’s a hard worker, he’s one of these guys that goes out there and tries to finish fights. He’s exciting to watch. He’s a great guy, handsome. Alright, I got one thing that I don’t love, it’s his beard. I’m not a big beard fan. Other than that, everything else is great about Johny Hendricks.”

So what is it with White not liking beards? What’s the big deal?

Asked if he would require fighters to shave their beards, White responded, “No, actually the commission is supposed to do that. When a beard is out of control the commission is supposed to make them shave it or cut it. That’s the way it works in boxing, but for some reason not around here.”

What say you? Do you like Hendricks’ beard and should he or any other fighter be allowed to grow it as they wish?
