UFC on FOX 8

UFC on FOX 8 takes place this evening at Key Arena in Seattle, Wash., and is headlined with a Flyweight Championship bout between reigning 125-pound champ Demetrious Johnson and number one contender John Moraga.

In the co-headliner, top-ranked welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald face off in a bout that is certain to have title-shot implications.

Round 1 – Leg kick Kedzie. Julie shoots, pushed aside. Kedzie drops her with what appeared a quick hook (could have been a slip). She tries to attack as de Randamie jumps right up and they clinch against the cage. De Randamie has her backed to the cage, controlling position. Knees to the thighs from de Randamie. Kedzie turns her around, pressing, looking to drop levels. De Randamie turns her back around. Knee from Kedzie to the body. More knees to the thighs from de Randamie. The crowd disapproves and the ref separates them. Inside leg kick from Julie. Julie catches a body kick, eats a big punch, clinched against the cage. More knees from De Randamie, they separate before the bell. Close round.

Round 2 – Nice inside leg kick from de Randamie. Again. Front kick from de Randamie. Kedzie looking a bit tentative in the striking. Nice right counter from de Randamie. Body kick from Kedzie. Looks as though Kedzie definitely wants to get the fight to the ground. Leg kick Kedzie. Head kick and uppercut from Kedzie. Overhand right from de Randamie. Round 3 – Front high kick from de Randamie, clinch, Kedzie going for the takedown, slips to the ground but right back up clinched against the cage. Knees to the body from de Randamie. Kedzie turns her around and looking to drop levels. De Randamie turns her around, knee to body, nice knees to thighs. Short uppercut from Kedzie. Knee to face from de Randamie, they separate and square up in the center. Huge right hand from de Randamie wobbles Kedzie but de Randamie doesn’t follow up. Nice body kick from Kedzie. Half the round down. Big right from de Randamie. Kedzie misses a wheel kick. De Randamie’s length and reach causing some issues here for Kedzie. High kick from de Randamie. Body kick from Kedzie. She catches a leg kick from de Randamie and puts her down. She could take this round if she can take advantage of this. Inside full guard. with 20 seconds left. De Randamie landing shots from the bottom. She lands a few elbows and punches but no damage done. Hmmmm…. it’s close guys. I’m going to give it to Kedzie 10-9 and 29-28.

Round 1 – Leg kick from Smith. Left hook from Herman, Smith clinches up. Uppercuts from Herman, knees to the body. Dirty boxing against the cage. Big knee to the body from Smith, again. Herman gives a couple in return. Another couple knees from Smith. Again. Trading knees. Big left right from Smith. Herman fires back a left hook that wobbles Smith. Smith fires off a solid right and they briefly clinch before separate. Left hook from Smith, then a straight right. Herman’s chin holding up. Left hook from Smith. Leg kick. Herman stalking, catches a kick, lands a right. Smith fires back and they go at it in the clinch. Knee to the body from Smith, again. Uppercuts from Herman. Dirty boxing against the cage now. Knee from Smith. They separate to the center. Uppercut from Smith. Jab from Herman. Leg kick Smith. Jab from Herman. Smith shoots, gets shoved aside, they trade in the clinch against the cage. Overhand right from Smith. Body kick. Left jab, left hook from Herman. Left hook from Smith. Herman catches a leg kick and counters with a right. Clinched against the cage. Nice one two from Herman on the break. Jab. Leg kick Smith. Nice right from Smith. Body kick Smith. Left from Smith. Leg kick. Smith shoots and gets Herman on his butt with his back to the cage. Herman gets right up, Smith leaning on him. Left right from Smith. Nice right to the body from Herman. Knee to the body and left from Smith. Herman pressing. He shoots, stuffed. Clinched against the cage, dirty boxing. Uppercuts from Herman, body shots. Smith turns him around. Knee to body. Nice right from Smith. Knee from Herman, he slips but shoots and gets the takedown, now in side control but Smith has his neck. PMN sees it 10-9 for Herman.

Round 3 – Leg kick from Smith, right from Herman. Right from Smith. Herman shoots and puts Smith on his back, Smith has him locked in a guillotine from half guard, Herman pops his head out. Herman holding a head-and-arm choke from the top. Herman lets it go. Smith gets to his knees and feet. They square up. Leg kick Smith, right counter from Herman. Leg kick Smith. Left hand. Left again. Herman stalking. Smith shoots, stuffed, uppercut from Herman, clinched against the cage. Knee to body from Smith. Herman with same. Body shot. Smith backs out to the center. Head kick from Smith. Herman clinches up, dirty boxing from both guys. Under a minute to go. Knee from Smith, again. Herman may think he has it won, he doesn’t have that urgency right now. Couple nice left hands from Smith before the bell. PMN sees the round 10-9 for Smith and the fight 29-28 for Herman.

Daron Cruickshank vs. Yves Edwards

Round 1 – Body kick from Cruickshank, followed by a head kick that is blocked. Head kick from Edwards. Leg kick. Edwards pressing, inside leg kick. Leg kick Edwards. Checks a high kick. Leg kick Cruickshank. Some serious audio issues going on with FX right now, snippets of audio from the Kedzie fight occasionally blasting. Right from Cruickshank. Inside leg kick from Yves. Cruickshank just misses a wheel kick. Nice body kick and right hand before the bell by Cruickshank. Close round. Neither really cemented the round in my mind.

Round 2 – Nice straight right to the body from Cruickshank. Right kick to the body from Cruickshank. Leg kick from Edwards, he continues to press. Cruickshank counter-fighting. Head kick from Cruickshank, not much on it. Again, with the other leg. Leg kick Edwards. Left from Edwards. Yves seems to have the better boxing. Body kick from Cruickshank backs Yves up. Leg kick from Edwards. Nice one two to the body from Cruickshank. Front kick from Yves. Body kick from Cruickshank, Body kick from Cruickshank. Body kick from Yves. Another very close round. I like the fact that Yves continues to press the action so I’m leaning toward him with both round one and two.

Round 3 – Touch gloves. Body kick from Edwards, caught by Cruickshank. Front leg head kick, not much on it. Right hand, leg kick from Yves. Axe kick from Cruickshank. Trade leg kicks, right from Yves. He continues to press. Leg kick Yves. Again. Leg kick Cruickshank with 90 seconds left. Yves with a couple leg kicks. Again. Counter one two punch from Cruickshank. Inside leg kick from Yves. Misses a high kick. Body kick from Cruickshank, one two from Yves. Cruickshank shoots, stuffed. Leg kick from Yves. Boos from the crowd. Leg kick from Yves. Right to body from Cruickshank. PMN sees it 10-9 and 30-27 for Yves. Didn’t care for Cruickshank’s purely counter-striking style. (Although I do like Cruickshank and I picked him to win this fight)

Mac Danzig vs. Melvin Guillard

Round 1 – Left jab Guillard, right hand. Leg kick from Mac. Left hook to body from Guillard. Leg kick Mac. Big leg kick from Melvin. Leg kick Mac. Right hand Melvin. Clinch against the cage. Knee to body from Melvin, again. Mac escapes to the center. Big leg kick from Melvin, overhand right follows to the back of the head. Big leg kick from Melvin. Clinch against the cage. Melvin using a forearm choke. Right hand on the break. Leg kick from Mac. Nice left jab from Melvin snaps Mac’s head back. Big left hook from Melvin. Mac shoots, stuffed. Good defensive head movement from Melvin. Leg kick from Mac. One two from Melvin. Leg kick Mac. Nice one two from Melvin knocks Mac back. Leg kick Mac. Body shot from Mac. Huge body kick from Guillard. He catches Mac’s body kick. 10-9 Guillard.

Round 2 – Mac shoots, body lock, can’t get him down though. Leg kick from Mac. Left jab from Mac. Nice straight right from Guillard knocks Mac backward. Mac pressing, leg kick. Right from Mac, Melvin dodges the follow up. Mac has a cut on the bridge of his nose. Body kick from Melvin. Ducks a hook. Leg kick from Mac. Melvin drops Mac with right then a big left hook, he pounces for the finish. Mac tries to scramble for the escape but Melvin pounds him with hammerfists and knocks Mac Danzig unconscious. Wow! Melvin now has the most KO wins in lightweight history with 7 and also most wins in lightweight history.

Danny Castillo vs. Tim Means

Round 1 – Means with a pretty big height advantage. Castillo slips on a kick. Means tries to pounce but gets put on his back. Castillo inside the full guard, lands an elbow as Means roughs him up from the bottom. Castillo with a can-opener. Means doing good defensively off his back and staying busy landing shots. Castillo landing the occasional elbow. Body shots from Means. Means gets to his feet, Castillo with a body lock from behind, picks him up for the slam. Means gets up but Castillo on his back. Means shakes him off, as he gets up Means lands a nice knee. Means tags him with a punch and another knee. Castillo shoots in, big slam. Castillo inside full guard. Can-opener from Castillo as Means beats up on the body. Elbow from Castillo. PMN sees it 10-9 Castillo.

Round 2 – Left counter from Means, body shot. Castillo having some trouble with the length of Means in the striking. Means stuffs a takedown, lands a nice knee to the noggin. Leg kick from Means. Nice body shot from Means. Right from Castillo. Nice overhand right from Castillo. Leg kick. Means calls Castillo forward and gets put on his back. Means has full guard. Means gets to his feet, Castillo with a body lock and puts him back down. Knee to the thigh. Castillo backs out before the bell. PMN sees it 10-9 for Castillo.

Round 3 – Touch gloves. Trade some striking on the feet, nothing too much landing. Nice leaping knee from Means, another one backs Danny up. Nice left hook from Danny. Nice left hook again from Danny. Means wants more. Leg kick from Means. Nice leaping knee from Means stuns Castillo. Danny clinches up with a bodylock. He gets the takedown but Means rolls him over and takes top control in side mount. Knee to the ribs. He stands over Castillo and lands a nice left. Castillo gets up. Right from Castillo. Means wants more. Knee from Means. PMN sees it 10-9 for Means and 29-28 for Castillo.

Michael Chiesa vs. Jorge Masvidal

Round 1 – Left from Chiesa. He shoots, going for a single. Great balance from Jorge, as he holds Chiesa in a body lock. Chiesa puts him down for a brief second, but right back to the feet, clinched against the cage. Elbow from Masvidal. Chiesa with same, he drops Jorge with a one two punch. Pounces. Masivdal shoots but gets caught in a guillotine. Masvidal throws him off and lands a big punch combo and body kick. Chiesa stuns him with a big left hand and presses Masvidal to the cage. Jorge turns him around. Big one two body kick from Chiesa. Body kick from Chiesa, left hand. Right from Masvidal. Big body kick from Chiesa, left straight. Right from Masvidal, big body kick. One two from Chiesa. Right hook from Masvidal. Nice overhand right stumbles Chiesa, followed by a liver shot, right hook after being tripped briefly after Chiesa caught a kick. PMN has it 10-9 for Masvidal.

Round 2 – Leg kick from Chiesa. Chiesa shoots, gets the double leg takedown. Masvidal locks on a guillotine, deep, but Chiesa escapes to his feet as Masvidal is also back up. Chiesa looking for a single. Masvidal escapes, fires off a combo to the body. Right hook. Body kick from Masvidal. He catches Chiesa’s front kick and dumps him to the ground. Masvidal lays inside his full guard. Nice right hands from Masvidal. Nice couple elbows follow. He moves to half, now side mount. Chiesa gives up his back, big knee to the ribs from Masvidal. Chiesa rolls to his back and Masvidal stacks him with punches. Chiesa recovers full guard. Gives up his back now. Masvidal briefly looks at a choke. Chiesa on his knees. Masvidal goes for a D’arce. 10 seconds left. OMG he taps with like .5 seconds left!! Crazy!! Great fight though. This was Chiesa’s first loss of his pro career. Chiesa is very upset and leaves the cage.

Jessica Andrade vs. Liz Carmouche

Round 1 – Leg kick from Liz, again, caught by Jessica, she lets it go. Clinch against the cage, Liz with body shots as she leans on her. Liz with the double leg takedown, moves to side control. Andrade gets to her knees, controlling the wrist of Carmouche. Knee from Jessica to the body after getting to her feet. She turns Liz to the cage. Liz turns her back around. Liz hammerfists the thighs and drops levels, trips Andrade to the ground. Liz on top in half guard. Liz in side mount. Jessica pushes off the cage, trying to sweep. Andrade to her knees. Liz on her back/neck and Andrade slams her to the ground. Liz gets to her knees and Andrade drops down for a guillotine, with full guard. Liz lifts her up for a second, squirms, 30 seconds left as Jessica hangs on — doesn’t appear to really be going for it, but just holding. Knees to the legs from Carmouche. PMN sees it 10-9 Andrade.

Round 2 – Liz with the takedown, gets full mount and unleashes the girl-rilla ground and pound. Andrade gives up her back and Liz is landing big punches to the side of the head, still on her back. Liz looking for the choke, Andrade is able to get back to her back, eats more shots, gives up her back again. Elbow from Carmouche followed by more big punches. Very hard elbows to the side of the head. Back to full mount. 2 minutes to go and Andrade continues to take punishment. Elbow after elbow. Andrade gives up her back again, flattens her out. The punishment continues until referee Herb Dean stops it.

Robbie Lawler vs. Bobby Voelker

Round 1 – Left from Voelker. Inside leg kick. Body kick from Lawler, bodylock takedown from Lawler. On top in half guard. Voelker gets up but takes a knee to the body in the process. Clinch against cage, knee from Lawler to body. Knee up high. Underhooks from Lawler. Voelker’s nose leaking heavily from that knee. Uppercut from Lawler and he escapes to the center. Leg kick Voelker. High kick from Lawler, checked. Again. Flying knee from Lawler. Step in elbow from Lawler. Under one minute to go. Body kick Voelker. Right jab from Lawler. Right hook. Leg kick Voelker. Left from Lawler. Huge body kick from Lawler. Flying knee. PMN sees it 10-9 Lawler.

Round 2 – Lawler looking phenomenal. Left hook from Voelker. Head kick from Lawler drops Voelker, he follows up with a straight right and Voelker is done. It should be noted Voelker took this one two weeks notice, but… Lawler is looking better than ever. How cool would it be to see Lawler win the 170 pound UFC title?

Round 1 – Rory looks warmed up and ready to go. No glove touching. Nice jab from Rory. Again. Rory looks big. Looks to have a reach advantage. Feeling out period. Jab from Rory. Right to the body. Boos from the crowd. Under two minutes to go. Nice couple jabs from Rory. Then a front kick. Ellenberger with a knee after a brief clinch. Ellenberger can’t seem to find his range. Nice jab from Rory, again. Brief clinch before the bell. 10-9 MacDonald.

Round 2 – Front kick from Rory scores. Ellenberger just can’t get inside. Rory using that jab very effectively. More jabs from Rory. Jake shoots, lets it go and lands a combo on the break. Rory shoots, stuffed. Head kick from Rory. One minute to go. Boos from the crowd as nothing happens. PMN has it 10-9 for MacDonald.

Round 3 – Rory seems to quick for him. Jab from Rory, body shot. Jab, jab. Jab from Ellenberger. Right hand. Front kick to the body from Rory. Jab. Rory slips to the ground on a kick but gets right up. Jab from Rory. Again. Two minutes to go. Ellenberger has landed 12 strikes this fight so far. Looks like a sparring match. This is a real STINKER. Left hook from Rory. Right from Ellenberger, then a takedown. He’s on top of Rory inside full guard. But this isn’t going to win anything unless he can really do something here. What a sh*tty fight. They both raise their hands. I wouldn’t give either guy a title shot off that performance if it were up to me… just sayin. PMN scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for MacDonald. How you gonna talk so much crap online and then do NOTHING?

Demetrious Johnson vs. John Moraga

Round 1 – Moraga pressing. Leg kick. Right from Johnson. Body kick from Moraga. Body kick. Leg kick. Leg kick Johnson. Right from Moraga out of the clinch. Switch stance, big leg kick from Moraga. Repeat the other way. Clinch, Moraga presses him to the cage. Knee. Johnson turns him around. Trade knees. Takedown from Johnson, moves to side control. Johnson moves to half guard. Moraga gets to his knees as Johnson has a front headlock with less than half a minute left.  (lost signal)

Round 2 – (lost signal) 4:00 mark and Johnson has Moraga on his back in side control. Johnson with knees to the body. Hammerfists. Moraga spins around and locks up Johnson’s neck briefly with his legs. Johnson escapes back to side mount. Johnson with some ground and pound as Moraga scrambles to his feet, gets suplexed, Johnson riding his back. Moraga back up, takes a knee, lands an uppercut. Moraga grabs a single. Body shot, overhand right from Moraga. Leg kick from Johnson. Left jab from Moraga. Takedown from Johnson, lands in side control. Body shots from Johnson. Moraga locks up half guard. Johnson looking for an arm, lands some ground and pound before the bell. PMN sees it 10-9 for Johnson

Round 3 – Nice right from Moraga knocks Johnson back. Leg kick from Johnson. Inside leg kick. Body kick. Great head movement. OMG lightning fast takedown from Johnson and I think there was a cartwheel involved but it was so fast I don’t remember. Johnson in side mount. Moraga gets to his knees and Johnson hops on his back with one hook in, loses it, and is back to the feet. Moraga hunting, knee and elbow from Moraga. He gets a body lock and puts him against the cage. Goes for a bodylock takedown but Johnson reverses mid-air and Moraga ends up on bottom. Johnson looking for a kimura as Johnson is on top in half guard. Johnson tries to roll with it but Moraga is free and now on top. Johnson hops up, takes a knee to the body. Again. Nice takedown from Moraga. Both guys on their knees and Moraga lets go the single. Moraga slips on a spin kick. PMN sees it 10-9 Johnson

Round 4 – Body kick from Johnson. Moraga returns same but ends up on his back from a takedown. Johnson on top in half guard. Moraga gets to his knees, Johnson spins and takes his back. Moraga gets up, takes a body kick in the process. Leg kick from Johnson. Nice body kick from Johnson. Leg kick. Front kick. Thai plum, knee to the body and another takedown from Johnson. Moraga with full guard. Body shots from Johnson. Moraga gets to his feet, takes a knee to the body from Johnson. More knees. Moraga takes a knee to the face it looks like while he was grounded. No foul called. Johnson looking for the neck but Moraga is back to his feet, holding a single. Johnson escapes. They square up. Moraga slowing a bit. Johnson is not. Huge right hand from Moraga stuns Johnson. Flying knee, but Johnson immediately puts him on his back. Johnson bleeding out of his nose from that punch. Perfect right hand from Moraga can be seen in the replay. May have broke Johnson’s nose even. PMN scores the round 10-9 Moraga for the DAMAGE (I realize probably no judge would give that round to Moraga. But it’s the most damage done so far in the fight).

Round 5 – Johnson with a takedown. Side mount. Moraga bucks out, gets to his feet but is put right back down, has full guard. Johnson passes to side mount. Moraga gets to his knees. Takes some knees to the shoulders. Moraga gets up only to be put right back down. Johnson  in side mount with 2 minutes to go, landing knees to the body, landing short elbows to the head. More elbows. Johnson looking for a kimura, as Moraga defends Johnson switches to an armbar, and he gets it with just over a minute left in the fight — Moraga taps out!  Beautiful nearly flawless performance.
