jose_aldoThe UFC 156 event took place in Las Vegas Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in what turned out to be a splendid event full of upsets. There were four fighters who took home bonus money for their efforts. Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, and Bobby Green all took home $50,000.

Jose Aldo retained his UFC featherweight title with a unanimous decision win over Frankie Edgar in the main event. Aldo started out strong with a stiff jab and heavy leg kicks. However, Edgar pulled the usual Edgar performance and finished the fight strong with lots of movement and combinations. Both fighters earned the “Fight of the Night” bonus.

Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva earned the “Knockout of the Night” for his third round KO win over Alistair Overeem. Overeem won the first two rounds fairly easily with better striking and very good ground and pound after a big takedown in the second. However, Silva came out in the third against an overconfident Overeem and landed a huge combination that rocked him to put him down for the count in a massive upset.

Bobby Green earned the “Submission of the Night” bonus for his rear naked choke win over Jacob Volkmann on the preliminary card. Volkmann took the first round with his wrestling and grappling ability. However, Green took over in the second round after getting top position on Volkmann and landing some brutal ground and pound. He overcame a highly questionable standup from the referee in the second round as well. In the third it was more of the same as Green dominated a visibly tired Volkmann and sunk in the rear naked choke for the finish.
