Strikeforce Challengers proves successful for local fighters

The fourth edition of the Strikeforce Challengers series took place Friday night, Nov. 6, in Fresno, Calif. The local MMA scene was represented well with a handful of fighters from the Fresno area on both the under card and main card. Fresno legend and staph infection survivor Cole Escovedo was first up.

Escovedo’s near death experience from a misdiagnosed illness is well documented. Cole came out with fire in his eyes and look possessed from the opening bell. His first offensive attempt came in the form of a flying submission attempt.

Although unsuccessful, he followed that up with an enormous high kick that found the mark. Escovedo followed his stunned opponent to the mat instantly. The referee was right on top of the action but hesitated in stopping the fight, allowing “The Apache Kid” to land several unanswered and unnecessary shots.

“Strikeforce – Challengers Series 4” results and play-by-play commentary

ProMMA.info is on the scene in Fresno, Calif. for tonight’s Strikeforce – Challengers Series 4 event at the Save Mart Arena. We will be providing live commentary and play-by-play updates of all the action. In the main event on tonight’s card UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel takes on Billy Evangelista in what is sure to be an exciting lightweight showdown.

Also fighting on the card is The Ultimate Fighter season 7 contestant Jesse “JT Money” Taylor, taking on American Kickboxing Academy rising middleweight prospect Luke Rockhold. Also, local favorite Casey “The Underdog” Olson faces Chris Culley in a featherweight match-up. Prelims start at approximately 6 p.m. PT.

(PRESS RELEASE) – All 18 fighters who will compete in the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts (MMA) event on Friday, Nov. 6 weighed in on Thursday at the World Sports Café in Fresno, Calif.

In the main event on SHOWTIME, undefeated lightweight (155-pound limit) sensation Billy Evangelista (9-0) will square off with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Jorge Gurgel (13-5) at the Save Mart Center in Fresno.

Other televised fights include a showdown between promising undefeated heavyweight prospects Shane Del Rosario (8-0) and Brandon Cash “Money” (5-0).  Rising middleweight (185 pounds) stars Luke Rockhold (5-1) and Jesse “J T Money” Taylor (13-4) will duke it out, lightweights Thomas Diagne (1-0) and Merritt Warren (4-2) will square off and Zoila Frausto (3-0) will face Elisha Helsper (0-1) in a matchup of female MMA fighters.

The SHOWTIME-televised fight card for “Strikeforce – Challengers Series 4,” set for Friday, Nov. 6, at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., is coming together nicely. PROMMA.INFO was notified Monday via press release that a fight between undefeated heavyweight prospects Shane Del Rosario (8-0) and Brandon Cash “Money (5-0) has been added to the card.

Other fights already confirmed for the event include Luke Rockhold (5-1) vs. Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (13-4), and a lightweight main event between Billy Evangelista (9-0) and the always exciting Jorge Gurgel (13-5).
