Renato “Babalu” Sobral to put Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title on the line against Gegard Mousasi on August 15

Gegard Mousasi was originally scheduled to fight Renato “Babalu” Sobral as part of the now defunct “Affliction: Trilogy” event on Aug. 1. Due to the cancellation of the card and the subsequent shutdown of Affliction’s MMA promotional division, the bout has been moved to Strikeforce, where Sobral in fact holds the light heavyweight title. PRO MMA (promma.info) received the following press release regarding the news:

NEW YORK (July 27, 2009)–The highly-anticipated showdown between Renato “Babalu” Sobral (35-8) and Gegard Mousasi (25-2-1), which was suddenly cancelled by its original promoter last week, has been revitalized and will be contested with Sobral’s STRIKEFORCE World Light Heavyweight (205 pounds) Championship on the line at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion on Saturday, August 15.

Gegard Mousasi prepared for U.S. debut Aug. 1

Gegard Mousasi (25-2-1) is coming off a big win (no pun intended) over Mark Hunt at the DREAM.9 “Super Hulk Tournament” back in May. Mousasi, who is considered by many to be one of the top ten middleweights in the world, is on a 12-fight win streak.

On Aug. 1, 2009, Mousasi will make his U.S. fighting debut as he takes on Renato “Babalu” Sobral at “Affliction: Trilogy” at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Mousasi, now training in Holland, spoke with MMAJunkie Radio on Monday about his fight with Hunt, the continuation of the “Super Hulk Tournament,” and his upcoming fight with Babalu.

“Babalu” expected to face Mousasi at “Affliction: Trilogy”

PRO MMA (promma.info) was notified Monday morning from sources at M-1 Global that current Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (32-8) is expected to face former DREAM Middleweight Champion Gegard Mousasi (25-2-1) at “Affliction: Trilogy” which will take place on August 1st at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Originally, a fight between former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort (18-8) and Mousasi had been in the works. However, disagreements between the two camps on what weight the fight would take place prevented the match up.

A formal announcement regarding the Sobral vs. Mousasi bout is expected to take place Wednesday June 3rd at the “Affliction: Trilogy” press conference at Trump Tower in New York City. Both Mousasi and Sobral’s name appear on the official “Trilogy” poster.

Renato “Babalu” Sobral set to defend Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title June 6th

PRO MMA (promma.info) was notified Thursday Renato “Babalu” Sobral (32-7) will finally return to the STRIKEFORCE cage on June 6th in St. Louis, Missouri, to defend his light heavyweight title for the first time. His opponent will be fellow Brazilian, Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (7-1).

“Babalu” won the STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight Title in November 2008 after landing an elbow strike that opened a deep cut around the eye of Bobby Southworth in the first round. Southworth finished the round but was not allowed to continue by the ringside physician.

“Babalu” is one of the very few fighters in UFC history released from the company due to a victory!  He actually defeated David Heath at UFC 74 with an anaconada choke but held the choke even after Heath tapped, causing him to go unconscious.
