Belfort and Santiago to meet at “Affliction: Trilogy”

According to a report from fellow mixed martial arts news website MMA Weekly, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Vitor Belfort (18-8) will meet current Sengoku Middleweight Champion Jorge Santiago (21-7) on August 1st in an “Affliction: Trilogy” middleweight showdown.

Originally, Belfort was rumored to fight Gegard Mousasi (25-2-1), but the fight fell through when Mousasi’s camp announced he could no longer make the middleweight division’s 185-pound limit and Belfort did not want to move up to a higher weight class. Mousasi is now expected to fight Renato “Babalu” Sobral (32-8) in a light heavyweight bout on the same card.

In his last few fights Belfort has looked similar to the Vitor fans were used to seeing when he tore through the UFC in the mid to late nineties earning the nickname “The Phenom”. In his last fight he walked through top five middleweight Matt “The Law” Lindland (21-6) in just 37 seconds at “Affliction: Day of Reckoning” this past January.

Gegard Mousasi confirms rumor to fight Vitor Belfort at Affliction on August 1

Currently ranked number two middleweight in the world Gegard Mousasi improved his win streak to twelve by submitting PRIDE veteran Mark Hunt in the first round of DREAM.9’s “Super Hulk” tournament on Tuesday May 26th in Yokohama, Japan.

Mousasi’s strategy coming into the fight worked perfectly. “I didn’t want to trade with him,” he confirmed. “My gameplan was to force a takedown by punching.” Mousasi will advance to the semi-finals of the “Super Hulk” tournament where he will face either Ikuhisa Minowa, Hong Man Choi, or Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou who all walked away with victories on Tuesday.

In a post-fight interview Mousasi was asked to address rumors that he will be fighting former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Vitor Belfort for Affliction on August 1st. Mousasi confirmed the rumors as being true, “Yes, those [rumors] are true and I will be fighting Vitor Belfort.” There is no word yet on what weight class the fight will take place but speculation is it could be at light heavyweight as opposed to middleweight.

King Mo, “I’d love to fight in Affliction”

PRO MMA ( caught up with undefeated Light Heavyweight prospect Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal shortly after the Affliction M-1 Global: Day of Reckoning card. The Team Quest affiliate was in attendance for Affliction’s sophomore effort and gave his thoughts on a few bouts.

“King Mo” (3-0) weighed in on the WAMMA heavyweight title bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski and believed Arlovski had been performing well in the fight up until a Emelianenko right hand.

“Andrei Arlovski had a great game plan and was doing a great job boxing. It would have been better if he would have stuck to the outside. Arlovski did a great job moving and he made a mistake when he went for that knee, a terrible mistake, but hindsight is twenty-twenty. He had him backing up and it was the perfect time to throw the knee.”

PRO MMA exclusive interview: Stephen Quadros

Immediately following the end of Affliction: Day of Reckoning’s main event, PRO MMA ( caught up with Stephen Quadros. “The Fight Professor” is very familiar with the careers of most of the fighters on the ‘Day of Reckoning’ card and gave us his thoughts on a slew of topics.

Fedor Emelianenko, Vitor Belfort, Affliction and pound-for-pound rankings were all points that the former PRIDE FC play-by-play man and expert MMA analyst discussed.

PRO MMA: Stephen did this event live up to the hype?
QUADROS: I think so and I was a little worried about the ticket sales but it was like 12,000 strong. It was a really good crowd and the fights delivered. We got some unpredictable things like Matt Lindland going freeze-dried from a Belfort left hand that kind of shocked me. Emelianenko, doing what I call the ‘fly swat punch’ when Arlovski decided out of the blue to fly through the air Gilbert Yvel style and he got caught and went down. It was like a triple thud getting hit with the punch and hitting the floor directly after that. I thought it was a spectacular event, actually. Including the undercard fights. Some of these guys, that are unknown fighters on this under card, I was really surprised with.

Mann Talk – let’s find old Vitor

Sometimes my girlfriend likes to push the issue. Over Christmas break I took part in one of time’s most honored relationship traditions – meeting the high school friends. Despite dating for over a year I had only met one of the friends, and it is safe to say I was a little bit nervous. The cocoons in my stomach hatched into full-fledged butterflies when one of the friends showed up wearing Georges St. Pierre’s signature Affliction shirt.

As I said, sometimes my girlfriend likes to push the issue and I knew the time was coming. At some point in the night, I was going to have to talk about what I do for a living. Normally, after I yadda yadda my day job, I simply throw out stuff like “I write about MMA” and the subsequent confused faces force me to say “you know that UFC stuff?” However, this time the woman wearing the Affliction shirt did not have the puzzled jeopardy music face.
